Curtains for the performance are nightly at 8:30 o'clock including Saturday. Clever twists are lent by the authoress on the tried and true theme for pathos and humor of a boy, his grandfather and a dog. Young "Tod," interpreted by a versatile juvenile, Sonny Rees, plots throughout the three acts with his grandfather, convincingly portrayed by Houseley Stevenson, to snare husbands for his two sisters. Right hand companion of the impish Cupid, is an intriguing cocker Spaniel, "Suddenly," who comes near stealing act two with canine tricks. Co-starring as the principal lovers are Rhonda Fleming, on loan from David O. Selznick, playing "Kitty Riordan" and James Ellison. EllaNora plays the part of the other daughter in the family and Mary Bear is seen as "mother." Irma Huffman May, Bob Williams and June Shafer, complete the cast. Play director is Sam Levene. Seventh in the series of nine plays to be presented by Holiday Stage will be the popular mystery-drama by Emyln Williams, "Night Must Fall." CORY TELLS HOW TO ELIMINATE FLIES IN STOCK PENS WITH DDT Climate and soil are the two factors that limit avocado production and determine where the orchard should be planted and what varieties to plant says R. E. Puffer, assistant farm advisor. The Mexican avocados are the most resistant to frost, about as resistant as the sweet orange. The Mexicola is the most hardy. The Guatemalans are less hardy, about the same as the Eureka lemon. In this group, the Haas is more resistant than the Anaheim. The Fuerte is in between these two groups. The mean temperature during the flowering and fruit-setting period is one of the main factors in determining the amount of fruit set. The other is the alternate bearing habit of the avocado. This is especially important with early-blossoming varieties such as the Fuerte. Growers in locations where cool weather predominates, with mean temperatures less than 56 degrees Fahrenheit during Fuerte blossoming, should plant later blossoming varieties such as the Hass. Sudden heat waves, especially with low humidity, interferes with fruit set and causes fruit drop. Prevailing and desiccating strong winds are injurious to the fruit and fruit-setting. Avocado orchards do best on the medium-textured soils. They can be grown on shallow soils but do better on at least three feet of soil. They must have good drainage. Avocados grown on poorly drained soils, such as a shallow soil with a subsoil impervious to water or a very heavy soil, usually go into decline and die.
