U.S. 101 Highway, Orange County, California (which is about three miles south of the City of Anaheim) under a designation not showing the name of the person interested in such business, to-wit: AGRICULTURAL LABORATORY. I further certify that my place of A A A AND THE FARMER AMERICAN FOOD SAVED EUPEAN LIVES; DARK IS NOT YET PAST The European people credit American food with actually sav- their lives during the critical months period last summer in food stocks were especially appreciated of the people Europe for this help was the super one impression gleaned Almer Starch, former Montan-recently returned from a six-hours survey of agricultural conns in central Europe. Starch one of a group sponsored by United Nation's Food and Ag- tural Organization. Despite difficulties in transpor- and spoilage enroute, said Ash, the food got through. And just every person he saw had reached in the program of abution, and was grateful. Food is still short. People are hungry. It will be a long before supplies are adequate. This is the picture given by Ash. There is no fertilizer, hearts. In many places, farm things have been destroyed. Any acres of land, he said, still mined. Conditions May 1 indicated a record wheat crop of 1,026 million bushels on the make. Wheat stocks in the four principal exporting countries—United States, Canada, Argentine and Australia — are expected to be only slightly larger than last year's (372 million bushels) and smaller than any other year since 1938. Foreign demand will probably again greatly exceed the supplies available for export. ICELESS REEFER TESTED An iceless refrigerator car which can maintain zero temperature under summer heat conditions has been tested by the USDA cooperating with groups from industry. This temperature, which ordinary reefer cars cannot attain, will maintain the prime quality of frozen foods. The test car has 3-inch insulation. A system without moving parts, using anhydrous ammonia, provides the refrigeration. A single charge of the ammonia lasted 46 hours. JEEPS, TANK CARS, ETC. IN FOOT-AND-MOUTH FIGHT Uncle Sam is finding a new use for some of that heavy equipment designed for purposes of battle. One hundred and thirty car-loads, much of this army surplus, has been sent to Mexico for use in our foot-and-mouth control activities there. Already received are: Ten track-type gasoline-powered shovels for rapid digging of burial pits; 10 bulldozers to fill pits; 100 jeeps to transport personnel and light supplies; 121 high-wheeled trucks; three ambulances for use as paymaster offices; three tank cars for Retailers Vote To Check Up On Solicitors A proposal that a secret chamber of commerce committee be appointed to investigate individuals or organizations publicly soliciting money or merchandise in Anaheim was approved at a meeting of the Retail Division of the Chamber of Commerce held yesterday at the Mother Colony House. The secret committee would not attempt to approve or disapprove of purposes for which funds or merchandise are to be used but would merely issue certificates to those solicitors who were what they represented themselves to be. A report on a survey to determine the attitude of the public regarding opening of places of business in Anaheim one night a week revealed that there had been about a 20 per cent response to questionnaires sent out. Of the 324 responses received to date 100 were in favor of all-night closing and 224 favored opening one night a week. Of this number 165 favored Saturday night opening. As chairman of the Christmas committee Victor Huber indicated his committee was already at work on preparations for the mid-winter festival. A discussion of parking meters brought out expression of opinions that when customers express dissatisfaction with the meter system, their attention should be called to the free off-street parking lot on Chartres street. Members of the division began It will be a long before supplies are adequate. It is the picture given by truth. There is no fertilizer, hearts. In many places, farm things have been destroyed. Any acres of land, he said, still mined. Lack of animal power hinders recovery of living. People in many cities live in bomb-pocked buildings without glass. Belter may not be adequate 20 years, according to Starch. Importation may be improved readily within two years. But, says, "It will be many, many years before production of food stored to pre-war levels." WHEAT BEGINS MENT OVERSEAS Heat from our new crop is being purchased by the Commod-Credit Corporation for the army people overseas. The CCC began purchase of new crop wheat for the 1947 art program early in June. In the million bushels of grain light for export during the last week of May, the USDA reports, only 500,000 bushels was wheat with the War Department had for occupied zones of Europe. Additional grain purchases for the period included 100 bushels of corn and 100 bushels of barley. Your purchases in this same amount amounted to slightly more than three billion pounds. PITE BUMPER WHEAT UP '47 CARRYOVER IS LOW Despite a bumper crop in pro-large exports during the recent marketing season will probably reduce our July 1 carry- of 1946 wheat to 75 million bushels. This is about 25 million new year's'. Total exports of wheat and flour the year ending June 30 may be 375 million bushels. This One hundred thirty carloads, much of this army surplus, has been sent to Mexico for use in our foot-and-mouth control activities there. Already received are: Ten track-type gasoline-powered shovels for rapid digging of burial pits; 10 bulldozers to fill pits; 100 jeeps to transport personnel and light supplies; 121 high-wheeled trucks; three ambulances for use as paymaster offices; three tank cars for disinfectants; 22 mobile spray units; and five semi-trailers for hauling shovels and bulldozers. Other items include 242,000 pounds of soda ash for disinfecting, and protective clothing, rubber boots and gloves. Grounds and buildings at the old National Agricultural College in Mexico City have been made available for a machinery assembly and maintenance center. NEW FOOD RECORD POSSIBLE IN U. S. U. S. farmers may produce even more food this year than in any of the last 3 years, says the Department of Agriculture. Present outlook is for a food production total which will be 41 percent higher than in the 1935-39 prewar period. Production of individual commodities, however, will differ from 1946. Smaller output is predicted for poultry products, fresh and processed vegetables, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Sales of milk and cream are also expected to be smaller. More production is expected for vegetable oils, lard, butter, evaporated milk, wheat, rye, sugar and dry peas. Production of other major food commodities will probably be about the same. Foreign trade outlook is for more imports of sugar, more exports of grain, and less exports of meats, lard, eggs, and dairy products. 1947-48 TRADE PICTURE DEPENDS ON WORLD FINANCE Finance will be a major problem in world agricultural trade in 1947-48, the Department of Agriculture's Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations points out in summarizing the world food situation. Many countries must still rely on imports to obtain necessary food supplies this next year. The severe winter, extensive floods, and labor shortage have reduced winter grain crops in Western committee Victor Huber indicated his committee was already at work on preparations for the midwinter festival. A discussion of parking meters brought out expression of opinions that when customers express dissatisfaction with the meter system, their attention should be called to the free off-street parking lot on Chartres street. Members of the division began casting about for means to get trucks off Center street, and there was a suggestion that Santa Ana street be resurfaced to serve as a truck route. Be fair to your customers. Reach them all through advertisements in the Anaheim Gazette. years is estimated for world cotton production in 1946-47. Production is expected to total 21.5 million bales. This compares with 20,650,000 bales in the preceding year, and a prewar average of 31 million. World acreage planted to cotton increased about 4 percent over a year earlier, but unfavorable weather conditions resulted in lower yields. WHEAT FOR HUNGRY At the urgent request of the War Department, the Department of Agriculture acquired almost 3.7 million bushels of wheat during the week of May 9 to 16 in order to rush additional shipments to the occupied areas of Europe where food supplies had fallen to dangerously low levels. Nearly two million bushels of this amount were transferred from reserves of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, and the rest was almost entirely from the spring wheat area. FINANCE will be a major problem in world agricultural trade in 1947-48, the Department of Agriculture's Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations points out in summarizing the world food situation. Many countries must still rely on imports to obtain necessary food supplies this next year. The severe winter, extensive floods, and labor shortage have reduced winter grain crops in Western Europe below last year's crop. Rice supplies are expected to be short. Some increase is probable in sugar, potatoes and fats and oils, but the supply will be less than prewar. Exporting countries will be unable to make up the shortages of these basic foods. Purchasing power of many countries requiring food imports will continue to be limited. Many countries formerly relying on UNRRA and lend-lease will have to turn to other means. Finances for food imports in 1947-48 will come from: 1. U.S. funds appropriated for foreign relief. 2. Buying power importing countries can muster out of exports. 3. Gold and silver reserves of importing countries. 4. Loans to countries importing food. Reconversion and reconstruction in war devastated areas will make available a larger amount of exports of goods and services to pay for food imports. Trade deficits, however, will remain larger in many countries. Many countries will be in no position to deplete their currency reserves further for the financing of trade deficits. Loans are expected to be the key factor in the volume of international trade. WHEAT-COTTON CROP DROPS FOR 1946-47 The second smallest crop in 23
