JUNE 30th DEADLINE FOR 1946 CONSERVATION PROGRAM
June 30 is the deadline for completing applications for payments under the 1946 Agricultural Conservation Program, according to Roy L. Hale, chairman of the Orange County AAA Committee.
"Nearly all applications are in, and many of the farmers and ranchers in Orange county have received their payments for the federal government's share of the cost of the soil-conserving and soil-building practices carried out under the program," said Hale.
"There are, however, a few who cooperated in this program and who reported the completion of their practices by December 31 but who have not yet stopped at the AAA office to sign their application forms."
"Any farmer or rancher who is in doubt as to whether or not his 1946 ACP application has been signed," said Hale, "should visit or telephone the county office at Santa Ana before June 30 to make sure."
LAND IS OUR STRENGTH SAYS USDA SECRETARY
"We draw our strength from Mother Earth, our land, our heritage."
Speaking at the opening of New Hampshire's Conservation Week at Durham Secretary of Agriculture late spring and summer will be as large as last year, USDA reports say. Retail food prices will continue substantially higher than in the summer of 1946, but are likely to be somewhat lower than in recent months. Although total food supplies this spring and summer will be about the same as last year, supplies of eggs, chickens, vegetable oil products and possibly fresh vegetables will be smaller.
Sales of ice cream and fluid milk and cream, it is expected, will probably be down.
On the other hand, increases are expected for meat, lard, butter, cheese evaporated milk, dry pastureed to be around 53 million head, total pig crop for 1947 would be an estimated 88 million head . . . nearly 5 million pigs more than were produced in 1946.
Expectations are for a relatively strong consumer market next spring and summer, when the 1947 fall pigs will be marketed. Unless consumer buying power fails to materialize, it is pointed out, it is unlikely that the price of hogs will decline to price support levels.

Are you wondering why we are still so short of fats and oils?

LAND IS OUR STRENGTH SAYS USDA SECRETARY
"We draw our strength from Mother Earth, our land, our heritage."
Speaking at the opening of New Hampshire's Conservation Week at Durham, Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson said, "land is our basic resource.
"It feeds, clothes and shelters us as well as supplying raw materials for fully half of industry's needs."
Of our original 550 million acres of cropland, he pointed out:
There are 100 million acres that are no longer suitable for cultivation.
An additional 100 million acres that are in a critical condition.
A third hundred million that are in serious condition.
Another 150 million that are subject in some degree to erosion.
There are, he said, only 100 million acres which are not in danger.
"It is true we have cut losses in half since our conservation programs were begun.
"But we have only slowed, not turned, the tide of battle."
WORLD CONFERENCE ON CEREALS IS PLANNED
A world conference on cereals will be sponsored this summer by the International Emergency Food Council.
The purpose of the conference is to insure husbanding of home grown grain supplies by importing countries.
The world will probably face a repetition of the present food crisis next spring and summer, Secretary Anderson points out. In his letter to the IEFC suggesting the conference, Anderson made clear that while the United States has another bumper wheat crop this year, the increase over last year will not offset the decline in food grain production in Western Europe which now seems certain.
There is no assurance, Anderson said, that our corn crop this year will be large enough to duplicate in 1947-48 this year's exports.
The United States will continue to make available every bushel of grain that can possibly be spared, he said; "but this," he added, "probably will not make... than in recent months. Although total food supplies this spring and summer will be about the same as last year, supplies of eggs, chickens, vegetable oil products and possibly fresh vegetables will be smaller.
Sales of ice cream and fluid milk and cream, it is expected, will probably be down.
On the other hand, increases are expected for meat, lard, butter, cheese, evaporated milk, dry skim milk, fresh citrus, canned fruits, wheat and corn products and sugar.
POULTRY, EGG OUTLOOK
Farmers' probably will start 1948 with somewhat fewer layers on hand than on January 1, 1947, when the laying flock totaled 437 million—consisting of 280 million pullets and 151 million hens. Although the number of hens for 1948 may be about the same or even larger than last year, the number of pullets may be less. About 5 percent fewer chickens are being raised this year than last.
In the second half of 1947, egg production probably will be moderately below the last half of 1946. Stocks on July 1 will be significantly less than July 1, 1946. Supplies per person will be about 10 percent under the second half of 1946 and about 20 percent below those of the first six months of this year.
Consumption the first four months of 1947 was about 140 eggs per person, higher than any comparable period except possibly 1945.
FALL PIG GOAL
The USDA has recommended a 1947 pig production goal, calling for farmers to keep 15 percent more sows than were kept to produce the 1946 crop . . . now coming to market.
This would mean a fall crop of 35 million pigs for market in 1948. It compares with the 1946 fall crop of approximately 30.6 million head.

POULTRY COMMITTEE
SUBMITS RECOMMENDATIONS
Research on both the production and marketing end of poultry and eggs is recommended in the report submitted by the USDA's Poultry Advisory committee.
In the field of production, says the report, three fields of poultry research should receive first consideration: (1) Broaden the scope of study on the efficiency and economy of selecting breeding stock to improve egg production and quality, viability and carcass quality; (2), feed comprising more than half the cost of poultry production, further research to the nutritive requirements of poultry is recommended; and (3) protein being the most important and expensive part of the poultry diet, more economical sources of protein should be sought.
Marketing recommendations include: (1) High priority should be given to research on ways and means of eliminating present heavy losses in quality and quantity during the marketing process; (2) more basic information should be obtained on the nutritional value of poultry products; and (3) markets should be expanded both here and abroad through the development of new food and other uses for poultry and its by-products.
