Army Offers More Education To Recruits
Not all high school graduates can afford to go to college, but additional education, plus technical training, is available to qualified young men in the United States Army, 1st Lieutenant Edward F. Tully, commanding officer, Santa Ana office of the Army Recruiting Service, says.
"In these days of international responsibilities," he said, "it is more important than ever before that every young man obtain the best education possible. Though many cannot go to college, they can, in the Army, get real career training.
Members of this year's high school graduating classes still have an opportunity to get credits for a college education under the GI Bill of Rights if they enlist in the armed forces one day before Congress declares the war officially over, says Lt. Tully.
"This is one of the questions most frequently asked at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station," Lieut. Tully said. "More than 1,000,000 young men are getting all, or part, of their education paid as a reward for their service in the Armed Forces. Thousands who never could have afforded college are getting their chance now—and many thousands more want the same opportunity.
But there is this difference: In order to qualify under the GI Bill of Rights now, you must enlist at least one day before Congress officially terminates the war. After he has served 90 days, he is guaranteed one year's higher education with $500 tuition and $65 per month paid for by the Government when his enlistment is over.
In addition, he gets an additional month for every month he..."

Tax Reduction To Relieve Income
“If the President signs the tax reduction bill just passed by Congress, California’s 3,993,181 federal income taxpayers will receive substantial reductions beginning July 1st,” said Senator Knowland today.
Continuing, he said: “Over 64 per cent of the reductions benefit California’s 3,993,181 taxpayers whose earnings are $5,000 or less. Low income taxpayers are especially favored by provisions which give a 30 per cent tax cut to persons earning*$1,400 or less and a 20 per cent cut to practically all others whose earnings come from wages and salaries. School teachers, clergymen, shopkeepers, retail store clerks, small farmers, office workers and factory workers will get the major benefit of these reductions.
“A single person with no dependents earning $2,500 who now pays $380 will pay only $304 under the new bill. With the same income a married person with no dependents will pay only $228 in taxes. Taxpayers 65 years of age and over are allowed an additional exemption of $500.
“Unexpectedly large treasury receipts together with budget economies effected by a Republi-
can Congress result in surplus which makes possible at this time a substantial payment on lic debt.
“A free economy eate successfully with an amounting to almost 3% of the national income to wage earners now tain purchasing power hands of people who buy of goods and services. The small businessman greater risk capital continuing employment.
“Tax relief,” concludedator, “was one of the pledges on which I were elected last Novem they have made good promise.”
