"Mr. M solemnly conjured me," David, "to take warning fate; and to observe that he had twenty pounds a year income, and spent nineteenings and sixpence, he was happy, but that if he spent pounds one shilling he would miserable." Mr. Micawber to me suspiciously like a lican, or an old-line Democrat as if he would today be unbalanced budget. This is supposed to be story. Steps are being taken by the association to work closely with county schools in the coming year to study rheumatic fever among school children and to attempt to minimize its serious effects. 'VACATIONS' TO BE SPEECH SECTION'S TOPIC With balmy summer weather turning thoughts to vacations and far-away places, appropriate theme of the Ebell Toastmaster's section pot-luck dinner meeting at 6:30 o'clock will be "vacations." "Personalized vacations" will be discussed during the one-minute section participation. Mrs. Harry I. Horn, speaker, will present "Set Sail for Bermuda," and Mrs. H. G. Carlin will talk on "Hawaii Paradise Isle of the Pacific." Presiding over the business session will be Mrs. Albert Raymond, leader. JEAN KILLGROVE TO BE FEATURED ARTIST Miss Jean Killgrove, pianist, will be the featured artist for the Orange County Symphony orchestra at Newport Harbor Union High school auditorium, Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m. The public is cordially invited. American railroads in one month alone in 1945 handled more military explosives than moved during the entire period of the first World War. WASHINGTON As Seen By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS A little of this and a little of that: Do you remember Dicken's David Copperfield? David and Mr. Micawber will live forever among English speaking people. W. C. Fields played "Mr. Micawber" on the screen. When he was confined in a debtor's prison, David visited him. "Mr. Micawberlemnly conjured me," reported David, "to take warning by his fate; and to observe that if a man had twenty pounds a year for his income, and spent nineteen shillings and sixpence, he would be happy, but that if he spent twenty pounds one shilling he would be miserable." Mr. Micawber sounds to me suspiciously like a Republican, or an old-line Democrat, and is if he would today be urging a balanced budget. This is supposed to be a true story. A man by the name of Knotts was asked to speak at a service club luncheon, and he chose for a subject, "The Sunny Side of Taxes." The chairman, with the German background of his part of Ohio, pronounced his name as "Mr. Nuts" and the subject as "The Sunny Side of Texas." The speaker corrected him; "No," said the chairman, "If you think there is a sunny side to taxes, your name is Nuts." A little item in a paper recently keeps coming back to my mind. It said that only 7% of the United States has been married geologically. Epstein Store Sold to L. A. Man Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Epstein who first came to Anaheim in 1905 and have been connected with the women's wear business in northern Orange county ever since have announced the sale of their women's wear store at 110 West Center street to Bert Malouf of Los Angeles. Malouf owns similar stores in Wilmington and Compton and is preparing to open additional stores in other southern California towns. Mr. and Mrs. Epstein were first connected in Anaheim with the old Falgenstine department store. They bought a store of their own in 1922 and operated it here until 1930 when they went to Fullerton where they were in business until 1936. Then they returned to Anaheim to operate the store they have just sold. Farm Center To Elect Officers Clark Donmeyer, sales manager for Southern California Citrus Foods and C. A. Richards will be the speakers at the meeting tonight of the Cypress-Magnolia Farm Center at the Magnolia school. The principal business to be transacted is the election of officers for the center for the coming year. The meeting will begin with a potluck dinner. A little item in a paper recently keeps coming back to my mind. It said that only 7% of the United States has been mapped geologically, while Great Britain has been 100% mapped. I know from observation that Russia is well over the 7% figure. As we advance into an age when minerals are increasingly necessary, and where science replaces brute strength, this little item could be important. We drew on our metals and our minerals, during the war, with a lack of caution which was dangerous. We know today, as I have just been reading in a report, that we depleted manganese, tungsten, chromium, copper, lead, zinc, antimony, and other items, including, of course, gold and silver. The probable amount of coal has been an argument since I was born, into a coal mining family, and I've heard oil arguments since I first went to Sacramento. Timber is being cut. The quality of the available iron is changed. Certain items have limited deposits: tin, nickel, platinum. I should not have to remind Californians that water is an increasingly serious problem with us. LA RUE-CHANCE ENGAGEMENT REVEALED Miss Josephine La Rue, of Fullerton, former teacher at the Benjamin Franklin school, announced her engagement to Frank Chance, also of Fullerton, by passing a beautifully wrapped box of chocolates to her sorority sisters.
