Izaak Walton Casting Tourney Divisions Set Divisions for the annual casting tournament to be staged by the Anaheim Izaak Walton League May 25, in La Palma park were announced this week by General Chairman Roy Mabee. With more than 500 anglers expected to participate, the day's festivities will feature competitions, an array of several hundred dollars' worth of prizes in merchandise and a super-deluxe barbecued beef dinner prepared under the direction of Chief Chef "Bud" Paschall. From throughout the country fishermen will compete in casting sections including wet and dry fly, salmon fly, distance fly, and three and five-eighths ounce accuracy plug. Surf casting has been tentatively scheduled also. In addition to sporting equipment, car accessories, wearing apparel, attractive hardware items and home furnishings will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. Judges, scorekeepers and announcers for the tournament will be chosen tonight (Thursday) at the regular board meeting with President Octave Roquet, presiding. Colorful spectacle of the day will be an exhibition by the smartly uniformed Ladies' Casting club of Long Beach. This crack outfit ran up some commendable scores here last year. More than 2000 spectators witnessed the prowess of anglers from this city and throughout Orlando carrying away top honors, from the National Casting association. Chairmen include Art Heinlein, tickets; Emmett Furr, fire; Roy Mabee, casting and prizes; Monte Webb, publicity; Dap Pannier, tables, and John O'Kane, stands. Cuisine, coming under a special heading, will be supervised by Chef Paschall, famed culinary artist who was hailed for his 1946 tournament banquet. Some of the outstanding names to appear on the program are Richard "Dick" Miller of Huntington Beach, Carrol Thorne of Long Beach, Ed Thomas of Los Angeles, Roscoe Reamer of Kansas City, Jack Geudulidg of Cleveland, Don Lemhard of Des Moines and Milton Craft of San Diego. Recall Permits For Industries On Highway 101 The official protest of the City of Anaheim against the opening of a new business-industrial district on Highway 101 south of Anaheim was heeded Tuesday by the county board of supervisors who revoked one previously granted land use permit and authorized negotiations for withdrawal of another. Action was taken upon motion of Supervisor James A. Baker of Anaheim. The permit withdrawn was that to F. E. Owens to establish a machine shop and a malt and sandwich stand adjacent to a proposed bulk gasoline storage plant and service station at the northwest corner of Highway 101 and Ball road. The Petrol Corporation which has a permit for the gasoline storage and service station was said to be willing to surrender. Freeways Will Speed Traffic Coastal Cities Anaheim will feed traffic from the Port of Long Beach the future over wide freeway which are in the Southern fornia-wide master highway. The port-o-trade exposition, to be staged in Long Beach June 13, will express Southern California's industrial leadership. But California oranges during the past week have brought about 88 cents a box less at eastern markets than they brought in the comparable week last year. About 1550 cars of both navels and valencias were on the market and they brought an average of about $3.76 f.o.b. which was 13 cents more than the average for the preceding week. Navels averaged about $3.80, f.o.b. packing house and the valencia average was about $3.53. The movement of navels was expected to be completed this week, as was the movement of Arizona valencias. Last week Florida shipped 2125 cars of oranges and 875 cars of grapefruit. It was estimated at the beginning of this week that Florida had 15,000 cars of oranges left to move, compared to 9000 cars at the comparable date last year. Reports from the east indicated there was some wholesaler resistance to orchard run and choice grades of fruit. The prorate for next week provides for shipment of 1000 cars of southern California valencias and 700 cars from central California. Chilly weather in most sections of the country did not prevent the market from taking about 50 additional cars of lemons but the average return dropped 15 cents to $3.76 a box f.o.b. Temperature averages at 10 auction markets last week were reported ten degrees blow the average maximum for the comparable week in the past three years. Here’s Chance To Train As Ship’s Officer Examination of candidates for admission to the California Maritime Academy will be held May 24 at six California cities. The nearest places are Metropolitan high school, Los Angeles; Franklin Junior high school, Long Beach and San Diego high school, San Diego. Boys wishing to take the examination should report at any of these places at 8 a.m. The academy offers California boys three years of college training to serve as officers, deck or engineering, in the Merchant Marine. They graduate with a degree of Bachelor of Science issued by the state of California, a license as either a third mate or third assistant engineer issued by Steamboat Inspection and, if they wish it, an opportunity to take a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve. The course includes three annual cruises of approximately three and a half months aboard the training ship Golden Bear which visits all ports of the world. Present midshipman pay in attendance at the school is at the rate of $65 a month. Governor Is Commended By Farm Bureau The Orange County Farm Bureau has sent Governor Warren its warm commendations for signing what is known as the "swampers and lumpers" bill. The bill requires a receiver of agricultural products to establish and post its scale of unloading charges, which charges are subject to the approval of the director or industrial relations. Another provision is that each registered unloader shall obtain identification as such and that farmers who haul their own produce to market may register themselves, their fathers, sons and regular full-time employees. Esther Mauerhan Passes Wednesday Esther Ann Mauerhan, a long time resident of this vicinity and who had lived at 9762 South East street for 62 years, passed away at her home Wednesday night, May 14, following a brief illness. Born in Wisconsin 83 years ago, she had lived in California for the past 65 years. Left to mourn her passing are five sons, Charles F. Mauerhan of Los Angeles, Frank E. and Coonie J. Mauerhan, both of Anaheim, James A. Mauerhan of Garden Grove and Ralph W. Mauerhan of Compton; one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude E. Nelson of Costa Mesa; one brother, Major L. Schulz of Chino; nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. James B. Abbott, pastor of the Free Methodist church, of which the deceased was a member, officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Fairhaven cemetery. Job printing. The Gazette. Lester King, Anthony Anton, Barton Beach and Lee Bell for board members. A baseball team was organized and will play their first game Wednesday night. John Spielman is in charge of all committees for a district 8 city picnic to be held in the Anaheim city park May 25. The program, given by members of the Toastmasters club, presented Alfred Holve, acting toastmaster for the evening, who made the introductory remarks. Ralph Alexander presented a humorous speech with Victor Hueber as critic. After the adjournment of the meeting, members met at the bowling alley for an intar-club league. "Col." Les King had the high series with 518. Garden Grove Woman Dies Mrs. Blanche Roberta Reed, 28, died Monday of last week at her home, 10791 East Acacia street, Garden Grove. A native of Anaheim, she had resided there one year. Surviving are her husband, John C. Reed and son, J. Dean Reed, of that address; one brother, Kenneth F. Cook of Manteca, and sisters, Mesdames Geraldine Hill of Modesto, and Ruth Willis of Placerville. Funeral services and interment were in Placerville. Her body was sent there by Honold Brothers mortuary, Garden Grove. 20-30 CLUB SEES HOLLYWOOD STAGE SHOW Members, wives and guests of the 20-30 club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Mittman on W. La Palma for cocktails before going to Hollywood to see the "Blackguard Returns," last Saturday evening. After the show they had dinner in Chinatown.
