WEBB Attorney for Executrix AAA AND THE FARMER POTATOES AGAIN AVAILABLE FOR LIVESTOCK FEED "AAA and the Farmer" of March 21 carried a story to the effect that the sale of government-purchased Irish potatoes for livestock feeding purposes had been continued. Because of the substantial quantities of potatoes from the Tulelake area still available, the program is again in operation, effective at once, according to Roy L. Hale, chairman of the Orange County AAA committee. Livestock feeders' interested in obtaining these potatoes should contact their county office immediately for information and further details, he said. "The Production and Marketing Administration in charge of this program," says Hale, "is re-instating it in the interest of diverting its commodity into useful and beneficial channels, and preventing waste." The Tulelake potatoes are under UC loan. While the program was previously in effect, 430 cars of potatoes were shipped for livestock feeding purposes. CALIFORNIAN HEADS CITRUS ADVISORY COMMITTEE F. R. Wilcox, assistant general manager, California Fruit Growers Exchange, has been named as chairman of the Citrus Advisory Council under the Research Department will increase by 25 percent. "The increased wartime demand for citrus fruit has naturally accelerated plantings of this crop, much of which will come into peak production during the next five years. We have good reason to believe," said Wilcox, "that the 1952 crop will approximate 250 million boxes as compared to the 200 million-box crop of the current season. It is extremely important, therefore, that immediate consideration be given to ways and means of developing new outlets for this increased production." Other phases of research which the committee considers essential to the long-time as well as immediate welfare of the citrus industry are: New methods of processing and new uses; higher quality through elimination of market, diseases and revised grading standards; and improved production practices such as disease and pest control, new varieties, and better soil management and use of fertilizers. The committee represents growers, shippers, processors, and distributors. USDA ANNOUNCES REVISED HOG SUPPORT PRICES The U. S. Department of Agriculture announced that the revised hog support price for the final six months of the 1946-47 marketing year (April-September, 1947) will average $1.35 per hundredweight higher than the schedule announced last October. Weekly prices, which will continue seasonal variations, are based on the annual average support price of $15.60 per hundredweight, Chicago basis, as compared with market in large quantities, "Keep right on eating turkey," USDA urges. "It is comparatively low priced." Public response to a USDA-sponsored campaign to eat more turkey resulted, says Hale, in large sales. In some areas, sales were four times normal. A turkey-conscious public helped to reduce the cold storage holdings in California from 15,138,000 pounds on March 1 to 12,653,000 pounds on April 1. WESTERN STATES WEATHER FAVORABLE FOR LAMBS Western states generally report favorable conditions during March for development of lambs. Other lambing areas in the country, however, were less fortunate. Unseasonable cold weather delayed the start of pastures in Texas, Missouri and the Southeastern states. Heavy feeding of grain, hay and roughage was necessary to maintain the condition of ewes and lambs. STORMS, COLD, DAMAGE BRITISH CROPS Food production in Britain has suffered a major disaster from recent freezing weather, snowstorms and floods, according to the British Minister of Agriculture. Much of the flooded land cannot be sewn this year. Extensive flood damage has also occurred to farm homes, feed and seed supplies, and livestock. Estimated losses include 100,000 tons of potatoes in farm storage; 30,000 head of cattle; calves, pigs, and poultry valued at about 2 million dollars; and 1,370,000 sheep and lambs which perished in snowdrifts. Government plans to put flooded land back into production... HOG SUPPORT PRICES The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the revised hog support price for the final six months of the 1946-47 marketing year (April-September, 1947) will average $1.35 per hundredweight higher than the schedule announced last October. Weekly prices, which will continue seasonal variations, are based on the annual average support price of $15.60 per hundredweight, Chicago basis, as compared with the average of $14.25 in effect from October, 1946 through March, 1947. The department stated that the revision results from the recent sharp increase in parity. Department officials pointed out that in view of the continuing strong demand for meat, it is unlikely that the government will have to take any price support action on hogs during the current year. MORE TURKEY ON THE PLATTER The public is eating twice as much turkey now as it did in the late 30's, the USDA reports. In those years, the economists estimate each person ate an average of 2.6 pounds of turkey; in 1946, the average person did away with 4.2 pounds during the year. With breeder hens still coming Much of the flooded land cannot be sewn this year. Government plans to put flooded land back into production include interest-free loans, special provisions for fertilizer supply and alternative croping plans, and an appeal for emergency farm labor, probably including use of military personnel and equipment. HUNGRY COUNTRIES TO GET MORE FOOD Good news for Europe's hunger areas are the supplemental expert allocations of certain food items announced this month by the Department of Agriculture. The U.S.-U.K. occupied zone in Germany has been allocated 120,000 additional tons of flour; France will get 33,000 more tons; Italy, 22,000 tons; Norway, 11,000 tons; Eire, 5,000 tons; and Cuba, 50,000 tons. If you own a business in Anaheim you can't afford not to advertise in the Gazette. NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND FOR THE COUNTY OF IVERSIDE.
