Three Picket Lines Set Up In Anaheim
The week opened in Anaheim with three picket lines in evidence. At the front and back of the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph company building on N. Lemon street were representatives of striking telephone workers. At the front of Herb Eldred's Drive In Market at 400 North Los Angeles street were pickets carrying signs which read, "Unfair — Excelsior Milk — Organized Labor, A.F.L. Teamsters Union." In front of Jack Payne's Penny Market, 130 East Center street, were two pickets carrying signs reading "Please Do Not Patronize This Store, Retail Clerks Union, Local $24." And back of the Penny Market was one picket carrying a Teamsters Union sign concerning Excelsior creamery.
The picket line at the telephone company building was maintained by known striking employees. All the others were maintained by men unknown to the picketed establishments who said they had orders not to discuss why the establishments were being pickedet. The situation was further complicated by the fact that the pickets seemed to be receiving at least some of their instructions from L. D. "Larry" Prin, field representative of the Bartenders' Union, No. 686, with Santa Ana and Long Beach addresses.
Payne said the Penny Market had received a 72-hour notice from the Teamsters Union to stop handling Excelsior creamery products but no demands from the Retail Clerks Union. The owner would be cut. "Well," said Cabinet member, somewhat apologetic. "The leaders of this Congress very determined men."
So let's see about this ad not to cut the appropriations for the armed forces: The Navy recently sent an order to a New England manufacturer of silicone tableware, totalling some 140 pieces, including 38,000 fine bowls, with 38,000 plates, all special, very expensive deserts also 23,000 salts and peppers, we cut glass linings. All the time War Assets Administration offering similar items, made in the Navy during the war, at al 10% of the cost of the new ordered items. Am I to understand that no cut may be made in the appropriation? It is for the armed forces!
Another department, which the moment must remain unchanged because the information is in the committee files, but what is not too far away from national defense," ordered 161 specially designed aluminum chairs, requiring special dies jigs, at a cost estimated once $26.65 each and another time $32.65. It happens that simple chairs ar regularly made, in Chicago, by a reputable firm, to for $12.65, but not from the special designs. The Chicago manufacturer came to Washington presented his case, and sampled. The buying executive was irritated. He didn't want to talk about economy; he said $15,000,000 has been appropriated for these furlishings, and he intended to spend it. Do I understand that you do...
More Leaders In Recreation To Be Trained
The improving of recreation leadership throughout California to help meet the leisure time needs of children and youth will be the aim of an intensive study program opening April 7, it was announced by George Hjelte of Los Angeles, chairman of the Committee for the Study of Recreation in California.
On that date, the first of a series of 14 in-service training institutes to be held at key points in California will open in Stockton.
Funds for carrying out the statewide in-service training plan have been provided by the Rosenberg Foundation of San Francisco.
Harry H. Stoops of Berkeley, former west coast consultant in recreation for the Federal Security Agency, has been named to head the training program. Professional and volunteer recreation leaders, lay members of recreation boards, youth activity chairmen and teachers will participate in the short but intensive institute training coarses in recreation leadership.
"The training of recreation leaders in California has not kept pace with demand for their services," Hjelte said. The Study Committee's recently completed survey revealed a great need for more professional training, especially for persons whose work in recreation is seasonal or of temporary duration.

The jump school course consists of rugged calisthenics to bring about perfect physical condition, and a series of mock drills to familiarize the student with the procedure in the plane during descent. He is also instructed to land without injury.
Main phase of the cycle puts into actuality the mock training of the preceding stage as the trainee is required to make five parachute jumps from a troop carrier flying at an altitude of 1200 feet at 110 miles per hour. Upon completion of the fifth jump, the student is presented with the traditional silver wings of the airborne, a certificate of achievement and the added privilege of wearing the popular paratrooper boots.

SALUTE TO THE ARMY
Too often, after the smoke of battle has cleared, medals disappear and uniforms all but vanish, public interest in the armed forces recedes to a point where their vital mission in peace is all but forgotten.
Fortunately for America, this apathetic attitude has been less prevalent since World War II, and will be even less likely to spread because of positive steps by enlightened leaders to bring home to the people the real worth of their defenders.
One such step, deserving of nationwide support, will be the 1947 observance of Army week from April 7th to 13th. "A strong America is a peaceful America" has been selected as the ringing theme for this year's observance. Communities throughout America will honor America's soldiers, living and dead, who did so much to make peace possible.
The week-long ceremonies will serve practical as well as idealistic purposes. They will inform the nation of the new peacetime pattern of national security being developed by the Army. And they will demonstrate the Army's effectiveness at home and abroad in supporting this Nation's participation with the United Nations in building toward permanent world peace.
America salutes her peacetime Army, remembering, in the words of the slogan, "A strong America is a peaceful America."
