State Acquires Park Properties
During 1946 five properties were added to the state system of more than 80 parks, beaches and historic monuments, a report summarizing the acquisition program of the state division of beaches and parks revealed.
In addition thirteen other properties were placed in escrow and soon will become state units, and 28 park projects are under negotiation.
Properties added to the system under the terms of the $15,000,000 expansion program approved by the State Legislature in 1945 included a unit to the Armstrong Redwood State Park in Sonoma county; a unit to the Mill Creek Redwood State Park in Del Norte county; a section of the historic town of Columbia in Tuolumne county; the 2300 acre Samuel P. Taylor State Park (formerly Camp Taylor) in Marin county; and the Pt. Lobos Islands of Monterey county.
Properties now in escrow include two units at Mt. Diablo State Park, Contra Costa county; a lot in the town of Shasta, Shasta county; Capitola and Coast beaches in Santa Cruz county; three units of Huntington Beach in Orange county; a unit of the Mill Creek Redwood State Park in Del Norte county; two units to the Seacliff Beach Park, Mendocino county; and the Del Norte Beach in Del Norte county.
Seven counties submitted master beach acquisition plans last year which were approved by the State Park Commission, and of the $10,000,000 allotted by the 1945 legislature for beach acquisition, $6,519,772 has been allocated by the commission for purchases in these counties.

Army In New Drive for Men
Attention is again being called to the fact that need for Army volunteers is great, and men who are looking for high pay, security, education on the job, and retirement benefits, are urged to consider enlistment in the regular Army.
According to Lieutenant Edward F. Tully, command officer at the U.S. Army Recruiting Service in Santa Ana, at least 40,000 volunteers are needed nationally each month, in order to bring the total Army strength to 1,700,000 men by July, 1947, this figure representing the size of army needed to carry out occupational commitments overseas.
Mail For Berlin Now Acceptable
In response to many inquiry regarding mail service to Germany, Anaheim postmaster L. Hoskins, stated today that orders (unregistered and uninsured gift parcels will be accepted when addressed for delivery in all parts of Germany) (American, British, French, and Russian Zones, including all territories of Berlin) except the port of Germany under Polish rule.
The parcels, he stated, will subject to the same conditions were in effect prior to the suspension of the service and also to following restrictions:

The counties are Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, San Mateo and Marin. Land appraisals were underway in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Marin counties, and the appraisal in Ventura county has been completed and the county will hold an election in March to obtain approval of the citizens in the deeding of county land to the state to match the state funds in the purchase of a beach at the city of Ventura. All purchases made by the state must be matched in cash or land of equal value by outside sources.
The park commission granted authority for the acquisition of right-of-way in the counties of Los Angeles, San Mateo and Contra Costa for units of the 3,000 mile riding and hiking trail that eventually will loop around the stae, but acquisition has been delayed due to a lack of maps and necessary data.
According to Lieutenant Edward F. Tully, command officer at the U. S. Army Recruiting Service in Santa Ana, at least 40,000 volunteers are needed nationally each month, in order to bring the total Army strength to 1,700,000 men by July, 1947, this figure representing the size of army needed to carry out occupational commitments overseas and to provide for the national defense.
Stressing the facts that the soldier has opportunity for travel, for becoming educated, at the expense of the government, in some of the most technical fields, for high pay, and is able to retire after twenty years service at half pay, Lt. Tully pointed out that the new Regular Army is an army of technicians, of high caliber men selected for character and ability. Men of this nature are asked to come to the Recruiting Service office at 202½ W. Third street, Santa Ana, and discuss with the recruiting officer some of the many advantages to be found in enlistment in the Army of the United States.
Parcels should bear the name of the addressee, street and house number, town, postal district number (if known), or prince, and in addition to the w "Germany," indication of the zone of destination, or the name of a sector in case of parcels destined for Berlin. Box numbers may be used as part of the address provided the name of the box holder is shown. Parcels shall NOT be accepted for mailing when addressed "General Delivery."
Parcels which are undeliverable will not be returned to senders but will be turned over to authorized German relief organizations for distribution to needy.
The export control regulations of the Office of International Trade Department of Commerce, Washington, D. C., are applicable parcels for delivery in Germany.

Huge Excess In State's General Fund Reported
As of December 1, the state of California had $256,667,062 excess cash in the general fund, which was $154,496,153 more than a year ago. It has been predicted that by June 30 of this year, the unappropriated surplus of the general fund will be between $150,000,000 and $200,000,000.
Most of the state revenue estimates made in 1945 are holding their own, except that the sales tax is producing far more than was expected. Expenditures are running below estimates.
The present surplus arises primarily because of unprecedented yields from taxes geared to the business economy. As long as the current inflation exists and business activity remains high, the tax structure will continue to pour huge yields into the treasury. It would appear safe, therefore, to continue the tax reduction program for at least another year.

Navy Recruiting Officers Ask for Radio Experts
Urgently in need of trained men in the field of electronics, the United States Navy is now accepting for re-enlistment, those men who served during World War II in the rating of aviation radio technician, radio technician, aviation electronic technician's mates and electronic technician's mates.
Commander Arthur O. House, officer in charge of recruiting for southern California area, declared that the need is so great that the navy is removing all barriers to accelerate the re-enlistment of these men and will give them the same rating they held at time of discharge.
"The field of electronics has grown by leaps and bounds during and since World War II and today the navy is working with civilian science and industry."

"The field of electronics has grown by leaps and bounds during and since World War II and today the navy is working with civilian science and industry in the experimental laboratories and is leading the world," said House.
Electronics will work for peace as they did for war, House added, and there are many new devices being experimented with at the present time that will perhaps revolutionize today's practices in many fields. The navy maintains schools for the teaching of electronics that are the equal of any school of their kind in the world. Men receiving this training are free at the end of their enlistment to return to civilian life fully qualified for the high paying jobs electronics will offer in the near future.
All men who are interested may call at their nearest navy recruiting station for full information. The navy also has a program for those men who have had no previous military service.
