Elect Officers At Red Cross Meet (Continued from Page 1) Tigers. Soon after they were declared surplus and shipped home, she was assigned to one of the four clubs in Peiping, the "Paris" of China. This club served the Marines who had been in the Okinawa and Iwo Jima campaigns. A panorama of club activities included a cafeteria featuring 20-cent steaks, a barbecue pit, weekly dances, hikes, variety shows, professional and amateur entertainment programs, and many games, such as tennis, miniature golf, cards and ping pong. A graduate of Whittier college, Miss Hackett took post-graduate work in library science at the University of California at Berkeley and served as librarian at the university training school at Los Angeles, for approximately three years before entering into Red Cross club work. The motion picture news film shown revealed the many activities such as "on the train and window service" for sandwiches and coffee, papers and magazines for troops being transferred cross-country and boxes for troops arriving and leaving on transports. From January 1946 to January 1947 a total of 5,100 hours were donated by volunteers and a total of 336 certificates issued. Certificates signed by Mrs. M. A. Gauer, outgoing chapter chairman, were awarded "for meritorious personal service performed in behalf of the nation, her armed forces and suffering humanity in the second World War." Mrs. P. M. Wheeler presented certificates to Lester Daniel, invalid, who has donated 4,000 hours of work creating 735 knitted garments for Red Cross and Mrs. Everett McDonald and Mrs. H. G. Schmelzer, jointly, for their surgical dressing program which ended a year ago. Audubon Club To Hear Noted Photographer Howard Cleaves, nationally known photographer of wild life, and Audubon lecturer, will be the featured speaker at the third lecture of the 1946-47 series sponsored by the Orange County Bird Club. The meeting will begin at 8:00 p.m., at the Francis Willard Junior High School auditorium, Santa Ana, January 27. Among Cleave's noteworthy accomplishments in the field of photography is his special technique of taking motion pictures of wild animals at night. A lightweight portable generator serves as a power source for powerful floodlights which illuminate the scene, and frequently hold animals spellbound while Cleave operates his cameras. Cleave has photographed wild life in the most impenetrable parts of the Florida Everglades, from the windows of a blimp's gondola, and has photographed underwater Salvation Army Head Tells Of Busy Year The Salvation Army Men’s Social Service center, located at 1370 Alamitos Avenue, Long Beach, has just concluded one of the busiest years in its long history, according to Major Orlo Ellison, manager of the South Bay area which includes the Long Beach social service center. During the year’s activities the local center has provided 34,869 meals, 1,912 beds, 1,350 garments, and 1,756 shoes. Thousands of the less fortunate have received assistance in various ways including hundreds who have been interviewed, helped and advised on all kinds of tangled problems by Major Ellison and members of his staff. The program is unique in that no financial assistance has been solicited during the year. The center, which receives all kinds of cast off articles, uses the men it shelters to repair and rebuild waste material which in turn is sold at a very nominal price, thus making it self-supporting. Count the day lost, says Major Ellison, when we do not have a number of “clients” who come to us with knotty problems and seeking some kind of a solution. For example, a one armed radio technician, an ex-Merchant Marine, whose wife is an expectant mother came saying they were being evicted and that they were desperately in need of assistance. A suitable job was found for him at the center. Another family who had “tried” to live in their jalopy for twenty-two days came seeking food and shelter. Last year articles donated to The Salvation Army social service photography is his special technique of taking motion pictures of wild animals at night. A lightweight portable generator serves as a power source for powerful floodlights which illuminate the scene, and frequently hold animals spellbound while Cleave operates his cameras. Cleave has photographed wild life in the most impenetrable parts of the Florida Everglades, from the windows of a blimp's gondola, and has photographed underwater scenes of ducks diving for food, and fish in their natural homes. In addition to the showing of this original and unique motion pictures, Cleave is an outstanding lecturer, and brings a fund of humor and inspiration to his audiences. Announce Civil Service Exams Designed to fill, through permanent appointment, all general clerical positions in the Federal service in California, Arizona, and Nevada, or Washington., D.C. and vicinity, an examination for the position of clerk has been announced by the U.S. Civil Service Commission. The examination will provide opportunity for war-time appointees to attain permanent status and for veterans and other qualified persons to enter the Federal service. Clerk jobs to be filled include accounting, auditing, fiscal, statistical, time, leave, payroll, appointment, personnel, information stock, purchasing, property and supply, traffic, correspondence, editorial, proofreader, mail, file, record, expediting, and similar positions. Starting salaries are $1756 to $2394 a year, with yearly pay increases for efficient service. The examination will consist of a written clerical test. No experience is required. Persons between the ages of 18 and 62 (age limits are waived for veterans) may apply by filing application cards with the Director, Twelfth U.S. Civil Service Region, 630 Sansome street, San Francisco 11, California. Closing date is January 29, 1947. Application cards may be obtained at the post office. Although cuts in Federal personnel have occurred in many agencies, and will continue, vacancies occasioned by ordinary turnover and the replacement of war-service and temporary clerks who fail the examination will provide many placement opportunities. Dreves, regional director here of the Civilian Production Administration construction division, Office of Temporary Controls, today informed business and industrial leaders of southern California. On Jan. 1, he disclosed, CPA was operating under 27 orders, excluding directions, and five schedules and appendices, compared with 43 orders and 18 schedules and appendices in effect a year ago. Veterans' Housing Program Order 1, which restricts non-housing construction to prevent non-essential projects from draining critical materials from housing, is still on the books, Mr. Dreves declared. Violators of VHP-1 are subject to vigorous action by CPA's compliance division.
