Xmas Trees To Brighten Yule Day On Pacific Atolls
Christmas on barren coral atolls and lush tropic islands in the pacific will certainly not be white, but there will be real honest-to-bodiness American Christmas trees, glittering with tinsel, lights and ornaments, if the Pacific-Alaska Division of Pan American World Airways has anything to say about it.
In order to make certain that the personnel who staff its overgass posts enjoy the same gay and old-fashioned Christmas as folks at home, eight Christmas trees were placed aboard outward bound Clippers at San Francisco. With each tree went a complete fit, also donated by the airline, containing decorations for the fragrant California firs.
The airline's American staffs range from a two-man team at Canton, China, to 20 or more persons on some of the Pacific Islands. All of the stations have one thing in common . . . their vegetation, which runs from dense tropical jungle, lacks anything remotely resembling a real Christmas tree. Therefore, the trees which arrive by air will be doubly welcome to the American personnel.
Surprisingly enough, this personnel includes a large number of families, even at the most remote outposts. On Canton Island, for example, there are four wives. There were only three until the arrival this week of the new Port Steward, Jack B. Parker and his bride, the former Audreen Mauree. The couple met aboard a clipper while he was flight pursuer and she a flight stewardess.
There are children, too; at Tonita Nandi Guam—whose ever solution of throttling traffic congestion and parking problems."
H. J. Brunnier of San Francisco, president of the American Automobile Association, lauded the association of the two motoring organizations. At the present convention of the American Association of the State Highway officials at Los Angeles, he stated that the radius of motor travel has been extended greatly in recent years. What once were local motoring problems now are national or international in character and require the co-operation of all responsible motor clubs for their solution. The affiliation unites more than 2,000,000 American motorists and 700 offices of affiliated motor clubs in common causes for the benefit of the motoring public and represents the most far-reaching development in the field of organized motordom yet achieved.
In concluding his statement, Brunnier said: "Moreover, the great prestige of the Automobile Club of Southern California in Latin America will be invaluable in supplementing the development of satisfactory motoring conditions in foreign countries everywhere."
RING OUT THE OLD RING IN THE NEW!
Slowly shattering Christmas trees, wilted mistletoe and slightly tarnished tinsel, mark the aftermath of the last holiday of the old year and the advent of the new. Gongs, tin pans, booming shotguns drown out the echo of sleigh bells and herald the dawning of 1947!

Merging of Auto Clubs Advances Drivers' Welfare
Following the announcement last Thursday revealing the affiliation of the Automobile Club of Southern California with the powerful world-wide American automobile Association, it was stated by Harry J. Bauer, president of the local motorists' organization, that the joining will result in reciprocal activities that will vastly advance the welfare of motorists of southern California and the nation.
"For nearly 50 years the Automobile Club of Southern California has been pre-eminent among individual motor clubs in the United States in improving conditions in the territory it serves," Bauer declared. "While our organization will lose no part of its identity, the affiliation will result in a greatly strengthened nationwide program for highway improvement, the extension of public safety, the creation of uniform motor vehicle laws, and the math of the last holiday of the old year and the advent of the new. Gongs, tin pans, booming shotguns drown out the echo of sleigh bells and herald the dawn-ning of 1947!

SANTA ANITA PARK
What preparations have been made at Santa Anita for its 10th Anniversary?
In observance of the 10th anniversary meeting at Santa Anita Park, the Los Angeles Turf Club has made plans for the most brilliant season in its history.
What preparations have been made at Santa Anita for its 10th Anniversary?
In observance of the 10th anniversary meeting at Santa Anita Park, the Los Angeles Turf Club has made plans for the most brilliant season in its history.
This 10th anniversary meeting, which begins December 28th and concludes March 8th, will feature the largest stakes and purses ever offered in Thoroughbred racing. There will be two $100,000 races—the Santa Anita Handicap on March 1st, and the Santa Anita Derby on March 8th—and ten other major turf events, each with $50,000 added, to attract the outstanding horses of the world for the Winter season.
To add even greater color to the field of horses competing in major events, winners of outstanding international races are being flown to Santa Anita.
Visitors will see the greatest number of high-ranking foreign horses, American stake-winners and famous jockeys ever entered in major turf events in the 500-odd years of world racing history.
Santa Anita's famed gardens, noted as one of the great tourist attractions of Southern California, this year will be a blaze of floral beauty more thrilling than ever before. With the majestic and oft-times snow-topped Sierra Madre Mountains as a back-drop, the setting is truly of natural grandeur.
Again this season, Santa Anita will be a major source of the state revenues derived from Thoroughbred racing. These funds support the agricultural and livestock industry of the state through the 70-odd state, county and district fairs, and the schools and colleges maintained by the state for the education of our future farmers and ranchers.
