Farmers' Future
Pictured in New
Treasury Film
There is an urgent need for careful financial planning by farmers for the uncertain future years, in the opinion of the U.S. Treasury department.
This is the key thought of a new 16 mm picture, "The Crop That Never Fails", to be released this month in agricultural areas throughout the country. Produced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the Treasury department, the film briefly illustrates the principal agricultural events since World War I and suggests that the American farmer draw a lesson from the past to insure security for himself and his family.
The story opens with a present-day farmer at home, checking his business accounts and planning for the post war years. He is enjoying the current high returns of agricultural prosperity and is contemplating purchases for his farm and his family.
As he examines the selling features of new equipment and new home facilities, the picture flashes back over the past years. It is shown that the American farmer has not always been as prosperous as today. That in various sections of the United States, he has severely suffered from the weather and unstable economic conditions.
Briefly shown are views of the dust storms in the southwest in 1936; the frequent menace of swarms of grasshoppers; the floods in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, in 1937; and the most recent drought in Arizona in July of this year.

The story recalls the unstable agricultural economic conditions following World War I. The high prices for land and commodities, at that time, are graphically illustrated by means of animation, including the "crash" in the late twenties. The farm auction sales which featured the depression of 1933 and 1934 are shown with footage "shot" at that time.
With these past events as a reminder, the present-day farmer is urged to buy wisely and only what he really needs to maintain his business in sound operating condition. U.S. Treasury Savings Bonds are shown as the best type of financial reserve.
"The Crop That Never Fails" will be distributed through the Department of Agriculture's cooperating film library system—consisting of 76 film distributors located in all 48 states and the territories of Alaska, Puerto Rico and Hawaii.
