Junior Clubs
Plan Meeting
For October 29
Premier reciprocity meeting of the season for the Junior Women's clubs of Orange county will be staged October 29, in the Brea Woman's club house with members of the Junior Women's club of that city acting as hotesses.
Plans for the affair were formulated during a county board meeting held last week at the home of Mrs. Russel Wilson, junior advisor, 311 Wakeham avenue, Santa Ana.
The district project plans were outlined. They included the furnishing of a teachers' home in San Bernardino.
Special guest of honor was Mrs. George Wheat of Newport Beach, president of the Orange County Federation. She presided at theurn during the social hour. The long tea table was beautifully decorated with an arrangement of roses.
Board members attending the meeting included Mrs. Clute of Santa Ana; Mrs. Jack McGrail of Seal Beach; Mrs. Ray Thompson of Fullerton, and Mrs. E. E. Willmore of Barber city.
Club presidents attending included Mrs. M. A. Calkins of Seal Beach, Mrs. Edwin Wildman of Fullerton, Mrs. Juanita Conner of Brea, Mrs. David Clark of Anaheim, Mrs. Russel Goetting of Santa Ana and Mrs. B.-M. Hanold
MRS. CARLIN RETURNS FROM WASHINGTON, D. C.
Mrs. H. G. Carlin returned to her home in this city on Tuesdayof last week after spending the past two months with her daughter, Mrs. J. K. Shafer, Captain Shafer and two children in Washington, D. C. where they now reside while Captain Shafer is on duty with the United States Army.
While in the east, Mrs. Carlin had the pleasure of visiting with Rev. and Mrs. Maurice C. Schollenberger, former pastor of the First Presbyterian church in this city,at their home in Baltimore, Md.Mrs. Shafer liked the eastern cityvery much and was most impressedwith the many interesting things she saw in the New England states.

Over-all chairman for the affair is Babette Stein. Costumes oforiginality for all ages will be presented by the Mary Millerickand Betty Rose shops.

Board members attending the meeting included Mrs. Clute of Santa Ana; Mrs. Jack McGrail of Seal Beach; Mrs. Ray Thompson of Fullerton, and Mrs. E. E. Willmore of Barber city.

Girl Reserves Well Organized
Now well organized with an active program planned, are the several local troops of Girl Reserves. Premier meetings were held September 16 at the White Temple Methodist church. Recent activities of the troops, which meet regularly at the church each Tuesday night from 7 to 8 o'clock, was a gala pot-luck held in the church basement.
Leaders include Betty Delecy, senior girls; Betty Launer and Ruby Arnsen, junior girls; Betty Wilmer assisted by Wanda Rhinehardt, sophomore girls; and Ercel Morris, assisted by Gloria Knutsen and Dickie Graham, freshmen.
Grand prizes of the day include a table model radio and a pressure cooker. Lovely door prizes will be awarded also. Claudina Coffin is in charge of the raffle and the door prizes. Chairman of the food and serving committee is Emma Wisser. Miss Stein is in charge of tickets. Chairmen of the tables and covers include Elsie Benner; tallies, pencils and cards, Marie Lenain, and table prizes, Alice Matejcka.
A highly enjoyable breakfast party, given last Friday morning by Elizabeth Lipps of Placentia, attended by more than 50 persons, helped to defray the expenses of the coming affair.
The words czar and kaiser are both derived from the Latin caesar.

Joe Sowder's Mother Celebrates
90th Birthday
Mrs. Elizabeth Sowder of Quincy,
Illinois, mother of Joe Sowder
of Anaheim, celebrated her 90th
birthday anniversary recently at
the home of her son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Curless, 216 North Eighteenth street,
Quincy where she resides. Mrs.
Sowder proudly heads a five generation family.
A delectable noon dinner was
enjoyed by immediate family relaatives. Climax of the party was
the presentation of a huge beautifully decorated birthday cake;
topped with 90 lighted candles.
During the afternoon a host of
close friends called to offer their
heartiest congratulations. The
honoree received many lovely
bouquets and gifts.
Mrs. Sowder has made her home
in Quincy for the past 14 years,
moving there from Bowen after
the death of her husband, J. T.
Sowder. She was born in Hancock
county, Tenn., and, after
marrying Sowder, a Kentuckian,
lived in Rock Castle county, Ky.
Thirty-two years ago, the couple
came to Hancock county, Ill. and
resided on a farm for several
years before moving to Bowen.
A versatile lady, Mrs. Sowder
visited in Indianapolis with her
daughters and family recently.
She enjoys many activities, attending the First Christian church of Quincy regularly, and visiting with her many friends.
She has five children, 29 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren
and four-great-great-grandchildren. With Mrs. Curless, her childen include her daughters, Mrs.
L. I. Stowe and Mrs. Gussie Palmer, both of Indianapolis, and two
sons, L. A. Sowder of Denver, Ill.,
and Joe Sowder of Anaheim.

In the spacious home of Mrs. C.
E. Harbeson on Burton road, Miss
LaRae Riley was honored by a lovely pantry shower last Thursday. She became the bride of Walter Kirkhart this week. Hostesses for the occasion included Mrs. Ruby Ann Baker, assisted by her mother, Mrs. Harbeson, and Mrs. Ruth Smith.
A delectable three-course diner was served in the outdoor dining room early in the evening. Appropriate table center-piece featured bridal couple figurines with tall white tapers casting a soft glow over the setting.
With the group of guests gathered around the large fireplace in the living room, the honoree opened her many gifts for her new home.
Those enjoying the affair with the bride and bridegroom-elect and the hostess, included Mr. and Mrs. Noel Sweeney, Miss June Atwell, Miss Dorothy Pearson, Mrs. Bill Allen, Morimer Smith, Stanford Kerr and Leonard Bouas.
