Truman Endorses Observance of "Religious Week" President Harry S. Truman, in endorsing the observance of Religious Education week, September 29 to October 6, warned that "democracy dare not neglect the religious nurture of its children, youth and adults." "We are learning day by day that peace imposes responsibilities no less arduous than the tasks of active warfare," said the President, in emphasizing his belief in the basic importance for democracy of religious education. He asserted that an enduring peace structure cannot be built unless it is built upon Christian principles, and that religious instruction incultulates belief in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. To Reduce Air Mail Rate Soon In an official report the post office department stated: "The demand for air mail service has continually increased since its inauguration many years ago. With diminishing unit operation costs due to a greater volume of business, congress has seen fit to lower the air mail rate from eight to five cents, a reduction of 37½ per cent, effective October 1, 1946. The same rate reduction applies to parcels." Michael D. Fanning, postmaster, said today, "While it is true prices in general have been on the increase, it must be remembered that the mail service is non-profit. As the volume grows, unit costs decrease. The use of air mail will rise to new heights with this great reduction. The use of the new postal insurance is also wise economy up to $5.00 in value for only three cents." Postal authorities feel that a great tribute is due the government for its operation of the post office department. Since its inauguration, services have been maintained, improved and extended; yet it has consistently followed the policy of extending to the public through rate reductions, the savings resulting from their increasing use of postal facilities.
