WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES Phone 2206 Beautiful Entries Mark 5th Annual Dahlia Show Hundreds of persons attending the fifth annual dahlia show to be sponsored by the Orange County Dahlia society last Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday night, acclaimed the scores of beautiful displays in the spacious showroom of the YMCA gymnasium on Church and Sycamore streets. Sweepstakes prizes for the show as well as first place for the best display went to Dr. G. Emmett, president of the society. He has several hundred varieties in his gardens and carried off high honors at the recent Inglewood Dahlia show. Lawrence Archibald of Orange won first place for the largest dahlia. Genevieve and Horace Ritner of Santa Ana received the American Dahlia society bronze medal for the best individual dahlia. Most artistic arrangement was entered by Mrs. Jess Gubi. The Kiwanis cup award went to Laura and Hobart Jordan of Santa Ana for the best 1946 seedling. They are the owners of 600 plants. Winners in the novice class included E. J. Jones of Westminster with first prize for the largest dahlia. Other winners were C. A. Thompson of Garden Grove, Eldon McNeill, Mrs. Lynn Crawford, Louis Enders and Earl Cowan, all of Santa Ana. Commercial displays and florist arrangements added an individual and unique impressiveness to the affair. The bride chose a smart afternoon dress of pink wool fashioned with a suave high neck and three-quarter length sleeves for the occasion. A striking rose-gold necklace was her only adornment. Serving as best man was Theo V. Wright of Baywood Park. Mrs. Wright was the matron of honor. Also attending the ceremony was Gertrude Scott of Illinois, Mrs. Wright's mother. Following a three-day honeymoon at Morro Bay, the couple returned to the Morris residence, 217 North Berkeley street, Fullerton. They plan to leave on a vacation to Canada in October. The bride attended grade and high school in Fallbrook and Fullerton Junior college. She recently received her discharge from the Waves and has been employed at the Fullerton General hospital. GETS ONE OF "THE THREE LITTLE FISHIES" A four-inch crappie highlighted the fishing trip enjoyed by Marvin "Sleeping Beauty" Ledbetter and his wife, according to current rumor. Locking the doors of his local jewelry store all-day Monday, the Ledbetters fished at Lake Henshaw, leaving their boat in the tules. Howell-Morris Nuptials Read In San Luis Obispo In a quiet and simple ceremony, Miss Nancy Howell of Fullerton, formerly of Anaheim, daughter of Mrs. Bertha P. Howell of Kettner boulevard, San Diego, repeated her marriage vows with Herrold Morris of Fullerton, stepson of Mrs. Margaret Morris of Los Angeles, last Saturday night at 9:30 o'clock in the pastor's study of the First Baptist church of San Louis Obispo, the Rev. Clarence Oldfield, pastor of that church reading the double-ring ceremony. Warren of Yorba Linda was chosen president of the Orange County Farm Bureau at the monthly meeting in the bureau's headquarters in Orange this week. He has served for the past two years as first vice-president and succeeds A. J. Schutte of Anaheim. A Garden Grove man, C. W. new scientific developments in the field of agriculture. In addition to demonstrations and discussions on various agricultural and homemaking subjects, instruction was given in recreation and entertainment. All phases of the convention were made possible through the cooperative efforts of faculty members at Davis, members of the Agricultural Extension Service, local 4-H club leaders and 4-H members. Several of the local delegates were reported to have distinguished themselves in activities at the convention. Paul Lieb, 207 North Claudina street, and Dorothy Beavers of Stanton, both All-Star members, were chosen as section leaders. Frank Mead of Orange Park Acres participated in a citizenship program in which Professor B. H. Crocheron, director of the State Extension Service welcomed all members who have become twenty-one years of age this year. The subject matter at the three day conference covered such subjects as the functions of the soil, animal nutrition, packaging frozen foods economics, plant and animal breeding, clothing and home economics. The local delegation to the Davis convention was in charge of H. W. Longfellow of the Agricultural Extension Service and Mrs. Ivan Elliott, leader of the West Orange 4-H club, and Philip Morris of La Habra. Cost Per Pupil in City’s Grade Schools Is $117 Anaheim elementary school district’s average total current expenditure per pupil of $117.54 for the fiscal year of 1944-45 was more than the $102.32 median or midpoint expenditure for the 35 school districts of 1,251 to 2,000 elementary average daily attendance in the state. The district’s $84.09 expenditure per pupil in average daily attendance for teachers’ salaries was more than the $72.52 median expenditure for teachers’ salaries by the districts in the same size group. Other current expenditures of $3.45 per pupil for 1944-45 were more than the $31.61 median for other current expenditures of the districts with 1,251 to 2,000 elementary average daily attendance. High for total current expenditures for the districts in California with 1,251 to 2,000 elementary average daily attendance for 1944-45 was $203.17. Low was $19.55. High expenditure per pupil for teachers’ salaries in this size group was $138.97 and low was $46.48. High for other current expenditures for the districts in this group was $84.38, while low was $19.71. Median or midpoint expenditures makes a good base for study comparison of per pupil expenditures by school districts. In using this yardstick, the expenditures of half the districts in the size group are above the median, and half are below. Causes for any wide variation Chosen President Of Farm Bureau Herbert M. Warren of Yorba Linda was chosen president of the Orange County Farm Bureau at the monthly meeting in the bureau’s headquarters in Orange this week. He has served for the past two years as first vice-president and succeeds A. J. Schutte of Anaheim. A Garden Grove man, C. W. Musser, was chosen as first vice-president; Howard W. Crooke, Placentia, became second vice-president; and John P. Cozad, Tustin, was elected treasurer. Nine directors-at-large were also chosen at the meeting, in addition to a body of 21 directors which were elected by the membership in their unit meetings. The nine directors include A. J. Schutte, Anaheim; J. B. Tucker, Santa Ana; Claude Ridgway, La Habra; John Gilmore, Anaheim; Ray Frantz, La Habra; Vernon C. Hell, Smeltzer, Earl Laux, Garden Grove; Adolph Bosch, Orange and S. W. Stanley, Tustin. Business included preparation for a program of education among the members of Farm Bureau and others in the county concerning the 17 measures which will appear on the fall election ballot. The measures will be analyzed by the public relations department of the bureau, of which F. C. Latham, Santa Ana, is chairman, and they will be prepared to present a group of speakers in brief talks about the ballot proposals. Latham’s department is also making the arrangements for an officers’ training school, which will be held on the evenings of September 13, 20 and 27 at the farm bureau offices in Orange and will present instruction in program and project planning, speech, handling meetings and other subjects. All county farm bureau officers and officials of all units will participate. There are about 200 members in this official group. Preliminary to further announcement concerning the position of Farm Bureau on the measures of the ballot this fall, the directors went on record as being opposed to Proposition 3, concerning public schools, upon the basis that: “Although we are not opposed to raises in teachers’ salaries, we oppose any such measure that freezes into the constitution the salary levels of any segment of the public employees.” Seated on the board of directors Charles G. Public Service Hour Scheduled A series of radio programs devoted to public service has been scheduled for Friday nights on VOE, Santa Ana, with Sheriff Jesse L. Local 4-H Group Home After Three-Day Confab Following a three day session of the 26th annual convention of the Boy's and girl's 4-H clubs of California, 26 Orange county delegates returned this week, carrying with them a wealth of experience and knowledge gained by attending the programs offered. The convention, which was held on the Davis Campus of the College of Agriculture, was the first since 1940. More than 1200 members of 4-H groups throughout the state attended. Kelly Wins 'Tke' Walton Prize Lawrence Kelly was the first prize winner of the local Izaac Walton sport cruiser fishing trip last Tuesday with a 21-pound albacore caught early in the morning shortly after leaving Port Lido Newport Beach. Second honors went to Earl Halderman who "landed" a 16-pound shark who liked the feather belonging to Charlie Evans. Two shots, one of which parted Charlie's line neatly, and gaffing were required to secure it. Seems Charlie Brown, enjoyed a "bull session" in the galley again. Next and final chartered trip of the year for the group is scheduled for September 24. Colonel Kenneth H. Leitch, state director of Selective Service, announced today that fifty Orange county men will be inducted into the armed forces during October in order to fill quotas.
