'World's Biggest Stage Show' to Appear at Bowl Now being enlarged and rescaled in preparation for its opening next Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl, Michael Todd's musical comedy "Up in Central Park" is being billed as "The World's Biggest Stage Show." The show is said to have many new features added for its run in California. Running for a year and a half in New York, and for six months in Chicago, the show broke box office records. A chorus of one hundred singers, 75 dancers, and a 60-piece orchestra will be added to the original company, still headed by Wilbur Evans, Betty Bruce and Maureen Cannon. Augmenting the show in the huge Hollywood amphitheater will be a number of "sight" acts. These will include dancers Fred and Elaine Barry, the Shyrettos' circus unicycle turn, trampoline performers, a full complement of Scotch bagpipers and 20 Arabian tumblers. Designs for the Howard Bay settings used on Broadway are being rescaled to proportions suitable for the mammoth stage opening of 160 feet. Extending 55 feet in the air, 164,000 square feet of canvas will be painted to form back drops. Scenery will be supported by eight 60-foot steel towers anchored to the Bowl's foundation. In the longest single engagement ever attempted at the Hollywood Bowl, "Up in Central Park" will play for 22 consecutive nights. The attraction will have a possible gross of $200,000 weekly, the 20,000 seat arena offering 10,000 seats for each performance. Last week 440,000 tickets for the spectacle were placed on sale. By extending for 30 days, from August 31 through September 30, the period for which the current spare stamp for sugar is valid, OPA will make it possible for housewives in certain local shortage areas to cash in their stamps. According to OPA, maldistribution, largely caused by the difficulty of getting box cars to ship sugar from producing areas to deficit consuming areas, has had the effect of making it impossible for housewives in certain sections of the country to cash their stamps for sugar. Effective immediately, the new price scale will be lower, but "close to," the price of the cars when sold new. OPA Price Specialist Paul Townsend explained that previously, 1945-46 used cars carried the same ceiling as the price originally paid for them, but not allowing for subsequent price rises or transportation differential. Thus, a 1945-46 car bought new for, say, $1140 in Detroit, could be resold for that amount but no more, even though transported to the Pacific coast where higher ceilings prevail not withstanding any price increases effective after the first sale.
