with the cooperation of the Army Air Forces to estimate the cost of helicopter operation and feasibility of the service.
In Anaheim, consideration must still be given to a more suitable location of a landing field for the Sikorsky machine, since landing on the school athletic field would not be permissible during the school term. As far as could be learned no definite area has yet been selected for that purpose.
Selection of the southland area and Anaheim as a testing ground for the new service, first of its kind in the west, was based on the heavy volume of air mail serviced here and the ideal flying weather encountered during the year.
Should the tests prove favorable, postal authorities were reported ready to recommend permanent helicopter service be adopted in this area along with similar service in such cities as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston.
The models used on the test runs were the R-5A and the newer R-5D, both constructed by Sikorsky, pioneer airman and manufacturer o fthe famed Sikorsky planes.
The R-5D can carry 580 pounds of mail and cruise at 80 miles per hour. The minimum flying speed is zero ,the plane being able to hover motionless while airborne at low altitudes.
