Gas Tax Share
Up 38 Per Cent
Over Last Year
State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel this week apportioned $14,773,112 of gasoline tax revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 1940. This apportionment, said Kuchel, represents an increase of $4,101,088, or 38.44 per cent, over the amount apportioned for the corresponding quarter last year and a decrease of $676,002, or 4.38 per cent, under the apportionment for the preceding quarter ended December 31, 1945.
One-third of the total apportionment, or $4,924,371, was distributed to the 58 counties of the state and the remaining $9,848,741 was deposited by Kuchel in the State Highway Fund.
Orange county with 67,808 registering vehicles received $111,-619.76 of the apportionment.
From this amount, the Division of Highways will allocate $2,462,-185 to be expended for street and highway construction and maintenance within the cities of California. The balance of $7,386,556 remaining in the Highway Fund will be used for improvement of the state highway system.
A total of $17,311,754 in gasoline taxes was collected during the quarter ended March 41, 1940. Other revenues increased the amount available for apportionment by $17,706. From the gross revenue, refunds of $2,484,317 were made to purchasers of gasoline not used on public highways. These refunds amounted to 14.34 per cent of the total revenue for the quarter, as compared to a fund ratio of 17.56 per cent of the corresponding quarter year.
The administrative expenses the Fuel Tax Division of the State Board of Equalization and Controller's division which audited the refund claims, in the amount of $72,091 or 0.42 per cent of total revenue, were deducted from the net gasoline tax receipts, leading the balance of $14,773,112 which was apportioned by Kuchel.
The Use (Diesel) Fuel Tax revenue collected during the quarter ended March 31, 1940, total $458,846. This is an increase of $81,421, or 21.57 per cent, collections for the corresponding quarter last year and a decrease of $34,383, or 6.97 per cent, collections for the preceding quarter ended December 31, 1945.
Revenue was transferred by Controller Kuchel to the State Highway Fund to be expended on repairs of bridges on state highways.

County Fair, Horse Show Break Records
Shattering all previous records, the Orange County Fair and Horse show, came to a conclusion last Sunday evening at the former AAF headquarters and the Santa Ana Municipal Bowl, with more than 35,000 persons, a figure far exceeding other fairs, having viewed the panorama of elaborate fair exhibits and four horse show events, as announced by Mrs. James Irvine, general chairman.
With proceeds well over the top, Orange County Assistance League's fund drive for a county-wide cancer clinic got off to a flying start, it was enthusiastically revealed by Mrs. Anton Segerstrom, chairman of the philanthropic organization.
An estimated throng of 45,000 jammed downtown Santa Ana last Saturday noon to witness the gigantic parade which attracted more than 400 horses and their colorfully-attired riders. Crowds applauded wildly as some of the country's finest mounts passed in review.
Other features of the parade were a steam calliope owned by the Eltiste company and a large variety of military equipment loaned by Ft. Ord for the occasion.
Climaxing the parade was the appearance of three jet fighter planes from March Field and a blimp from the Naval Air Station at Santa Ana over the Municipal Bowl as the riders made their grand entry at the beginning of Saturday's matinee horse show.
A record number of entries swelled booths on the grounds and in the fair buildings. Art exhibits, ceramic displays, horticultural changes passed by Congress, cannot go into effect unless fled by the senate and signed by the president.

The 1946 Tournament of Lights will be staged on August 17, it was announced here this week, following a dinner meeting at the Newport Harbor Yacht club at Newport Beach at which plans for the "greatest night water festival ever seen" were drawn up.
Entries in the festival will consist of everything from canoes to yachts, Henry Grandin, commodore of the club, said, adding barges and floats were ruled from the affair due to their unwieldiness.
The affair, originally scheduled for August 10, was changed to the latter date when it was found it would conflict with the calendar of the Southern California Yacht-ing association and the Laguna Beach Art Festival.
