Garden Grove Site of New Firm
Formation of a new company to be equipped with quick freeze apparatus and modern handling equipment in Garden Grove was announced here this week following announcement of the sale of the Bean Growers association, first cooperative bean warehouse in California.
Mrs. John P. Hayhurst, manager of the new cooperative, said the fast growth of the quick-freeze industry was one of the principal factors in the Orange county sale and dissolution of the association.
Meanwhile, C. Edward Reifsteck, secretary of the Southern California Frozen Food Council, reported this week that industry expects to reach its predicted volume of a billion pound pack this year.
"A slight improvement is apparent in the equipment situation and many distributors are now getting display cabinets as rapidly as deliveries can be made by manufacturers," he said.

Walnut Growers Get Moth Warning
Walnut growers this week were urged to begin treatment of walnut trees for codling moth worm in all districts of Orange county except certain coastal areas.
Roy Black, deputy agricultural commissioner, issuing the warning, said moth emergence has continued low for several weeks with no outstanding peak yet reached.
Slowness of emergence of the moth this year was attributed to the extended period of cool weather that has embraced the walnut growing area in Orange county, Black said.
Moth eggs are being discovered in abundance in all areas away from the coast, Black said, and described the use of DDT as inadvisable since it is still in the experimental stage. Use of DDT was discouraged due to the shortage of nicotine necessary to control walnut aphids which have demonstrated a tendency to increase heavily after use of the chemical.
Formula for a recommended material to use was given as follows: 5 pounds of basis arsenate of lead and one-quarter to one-third of a pound casein spreader, for each 100 gallons of spray.

Trans-Pacific Flight Service Is Resumed
Air transport service between the United States and New Zealand was resumed last week as the Pan American World Airways clipper plane, the Mandarin, left the west coast for Auckland via Honolulu, the Fijis and Noumea in New Caledonia.
Passengers bound for the land "down under" will now make the trip in 41½ hours as compared to the old time of 52 hours.
Last week's flight marked the first commercial service between the two nations since Pearl Harbor.

Where little child cry from
Somewhere, halfway across the world, two little children cry bitterly from hunger. Children cannot understand the why of hunger—they know only the gnawing pain, the piteous weakness. A heartbroken mother listens helplessly.
Their only hope—and the hope of millions like them—is that Americans will not be complacent in a starving world . . . that you will share the abundance that is yours.
You are pledged to "Share a Meal Every Day," to help supply starving people with fat and wheat products. But the need for all foods is so desperate that you're asked to do more . . . to give money to buy food, or give food in tin cans, and to give generously!
Where the food you give will go. Contributions of canned foods will be distributed free in war-devastated countries on the basis of greatest need.

Why food must be in tin cans. Food in tin cans can be handled safely for distant shipments and travel over difficult roads.
Why the need is so desperate. The battles that brought us victory scourged most of the countries that fought as our allies. The worst drought in fifty years followed the war. Crops failed throughout Europe and Asia. 500,000,000 men, women, and children are hungry and starving.
