Valencia Crop Begins To Move
Despite a paralyzing train strike that for nearly 48 hours threatened a nation with bankruptcy, Orange county fruit growers and citrus interests rejoiced Monday as normal rail traffic was resumed.
Earl Woodward, manager of the Anaheim Cooperative Orange association reported earlier this week shipments of the Valencia crop were just beginning to move out of the county and were not too seriously disrupted by the sudden cessation of train operations last week.
All that was picked in this area of other types was shipped out or enroute for shipment, he said. Had the strike continued, it undoubtedly would have had a serious effect on growers in this region he added.
Elsewhere in the southern California area, farmers continued to worry over the continued shortage of refrigerator cars and one group of Imperial county shippers were reported considering using surplus army cargo planes to salvage their crops.
Western Growers association spokesmen warned earlier last week that a 10 million dollar melon crop in Imperial county and Salinas lettuce shipments totaling $200,000 a day, were doomed unless train operations were resumed immediately.
No word was available up to a late hour yesterday concerning their situation with the resumption of freight operations.
The association also reported earlier that two and a half million dollars worth of perishable

No word was available up to a late hour yesterday concerning their situation with the resumption of freight operations.
The association also reported earlier that two and a half million dollars worth of perishable fruits and vegetables were stranded in stalled freight cars throughout the southwest as the trainmen heeded union orders and struck last week.
Spokesmen for the Southern Pacific railroad reported 3000 cars carrying perishable foodstuffs were tied up on their lines alone over the week-end but had resumed travel eastward with the end of the strike.

New OPA Price Hike On Appliances
A wage-price increase amounting to 9.3 per cent has been granted manufacturers of small electric appliances, effective immediately, the district office of the Office of Price Administration announced this week.
The new increase, applying to manufacturers of small electric appliances such as toasters, warming pads and small space heaters, will result in an increase of four to five per cent over existing retail ceiling prices.
OPA spokesmen said the price adjustment is effective immediately and may be added to the eight per cent reconversion price increase granted last fall.

Making is one of our arts. Fully as old, of course, part of preparing sausage for sale. There are many types of goods. They offer almost unlimited possibilities to the home-maker who is interested in varying her menu and is always looking for ideas that are different and, at the same time, pleasing to the family palate. Above are just a few ideas for preparing a few of the sausages. They show what can be attained with a little ingenuity in the kitchen.
