Assistance League Sponsors Cancer Drive in Anaheim
In 1945 the American Cancer Society set out to establish a center for an all-out attack on cancer and succeeded in raising $4,000 for this purpose, as comed with $800,000, the largest grant raised in any previous year. At the corner of Lemon and Water streets, Assistance League members, sponsors of the local potter, are serving as an information center and distributing phlebs to Anaheimers, coping valuable facts compiled by ment scientists. This drive is conjunction with the national event and will continue through April.
Cancer is no longer a hopeless disease, as thousands of cases are now being cured every year, according to the national interim report on the 1945 campaign. A nation-wide survey of all cancer research has been made, and in order to accomplish its mission, which is the progressive reduction of the cancer death rate, the American Cancer society is now pushing forward to this all-out attack.
In a large number of localities this organization and the members of its field army are working with county medical societies to increase the number of detection clinics where people can go to find out whether they are free of cancer's danger signals and, if not, be directed to see a doctor for proper diagnosis.
The campaign in 1945 resulted in providing every state with more funds for educational work than in any previous year. It is conceded that the most immediate opportunity to save more peo-
ple from death by cancer lies in education. The fact that approximately 30,000 lives a year are now being saved through early recognition and treatment is due in large measure to the educational campaign of the last 33 years in which the American Cancer society has played an important part. The fact that from 30,-000 to 50,000 more a year die needlessly shows the dire need for expansion to teach people to seek medical aid at the first sign of a cancer danger signal.
These seven danger signals are contained in pamphlets found at the corner of Center and Lemon streets, at the information desk.
Commercial milk production in California in 1945 established a new all-time record for any year. Utilization in the form of market milk and in evaporated milk, cottage cheese curd, ice cream, and sherbet also established new records.
