Thursday, April 11, 1946 WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES By Barbara Hedden Fremont Students Display Posters THE ABOVE STUDENTS, with their prize-winning posters for the Ebell Flower-Hobby show April 25 and 26, which are being displayed throughout Anaheim in merchant's windows, are as follow: upper row, left to right: Janet Schacht, Beverly Knox, Patty Mattox, Peggy Borden, Jo Anne Woods, Joanne Davenport, Betty Raley, Connie Estrada, Virginia Torres, Mary Carrillo, Jo Anne Burdle, Barbara Trapp. Bottom row, left to right: Angela Wren, Patty Summers, Joanne Newmann, Phoebe Merrimann, Lucy Mazza, Marlene Byron, Marlene Fox, Patsy Callaway, Robert Eberhart, Louis Reinoza and Roy Don Miller. Many Anaheim elementary high school students have been busily engaged during the month of March making posters advertising this show, to be given at the Anaheim Union high school, and choose two of the prize winners from each school, as third of the 70 posters submitted were prize winning mate. Many Anaheim elementary high school students have been busily engaged during the month of March making posters advertising this show, to be given at the Anaheim Ebell clubhouse on April 25 and 26. Mrs. Milton Sell, poster chairman, was chairman of the poster contest, which included students from Horace Mann school, under the supervision of Miss Lucia Upp, art instructor, Fremont school; Miss Margaret Mitchell, instructor in art, and Anaheim Union high school, under the direction of Miss Phyllis Wilson, art instructor. Groups of the students and posters were photographed through the courtesy of Miss Phyllis Wilson, instructor in photography, Anaheim Union high school, and Wilbert Bonney, principal, Fremont school and instructor in photography, Fremont Camera club. Roy Rowe assisted in making the prints given to students in pictures as gifts of appreciation. Robert Boney of the Anaheim Dodge agency, donated the prizes awarded in the poster contest. Poster judges included Miss Elva Haskett, Anaheim juvenile librarian; Ann Jackson, Anaheim artist; and Mr. Fred Robins of Robins paint store, who reported it a most difficult task to judge present, she is a member of the Anaheim White Temple Methodist church choir. Miss Hibbers is well known in Orange county as a pianist and teacher. She teaches in Anaheim and Fullerton and has studied piano with Florence Austin Newkirk and organ with Clarence Wader. She is the featured organist at the First Presbyterian church of this city. Harmony Trio At Melrose Abbey The Harmony Trio, popular musical group of Orange county, presented a varied program of charm in the Melrose Abbey Chapel, last Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Trio members include Dempsey Pride, talented young soprano who has appeared before many clubs throughout the county; Fay Spicer, well known concert violinist; and Ruth Armstrong, pianist, organist and arranger for the trio. EBELL ANNOUNCEMENTS APRIL 15—Impressively beautiful music in accordance with the observance of Easter, will preclude the Bible section program to begin at 2 p.m. "Gram," prize, one-act play, by Martha G. Raymond, awarded in 1945, will be presented by the high school drama department under the direction of Miss Phelps. Lovely tea hour will close the affair. Melhorns to Give Sacred Musicale A sacred musicale by V. Downs Melhorn, coloratura prano, and Harrison Melhorn, frist, and their pupils will be presented at Melrose Abbey chapel next Sunday afternoon at 9 o'clock, in their second appearance on the memory hour. Well known in Orange county the Melhorns have taught me for a number of years in San Ana. Pupils appearing on the program will include sopra Geraldine Livingston, Mary Nielson, Mona Hannamman, Viola Betlack, Virginia Slater, Max Murdy and Lois Cox; contra Marion George, Betty Webb; Martha Bennett; flutists Shilah Anderson, Dorothy Shafer, Claiotte and Dorothy Plummer; Gilbert and Joan Smale; and organist Dorothy Murdy Miller. The public is cordially invited to attend. JUNIOR EBELL ANNOUNCEMENTS: Members are reminded to vite their mothers to the general meeting, May 7, 7:45 p.m. the clubhouse; an excellent program and tea hour has been planned. APRIL 22—"The Egg and I," by Betty Macdonald, widely read book, will be reviewed by Elizabeth Arnold at the book section, with a 1 p.m. potluck luncheon to open the affair; Mrs. H. D. Newkirk, leader and Mrs. M. A. Gauer, assistant leader, arrangements. APRIL 24—"Topic Box," impromptu talk will head the toastmaster section to begin at 7:30 p.m., with Mrs. Arthur Roquet, meeting chairman; Mrs. Albert Raymond, leader, and Mrs. Paul Demaree, assistant leader, presiding. APRIL 24 is the day to enter those hobbies for the Ebell flower and hobby show, to be in place between 2 and 4 p.m. at the clubhouse. MAY 6—"A May breakfast" will be featured for the next general meeting to begin at 11 a.m. in the Ebell clubhouse. Everybody reads The Gazette. ANAHEIM GAZETTE B. Franklin P.-T. A. Officers Seated Observance of public school week was marked at Benjamin Franklin grammar school Wednesday afternoon by the early dismissal of classes for the presentation of open house from 3:00 to 6:00 o'clock, with a special program featured and a regalia of student exhibits displayed. The installation of the school's P.-T.A. officers during their regular meeting preceded the celebration. Participating in the program were Mrs. Clara Harmon's third grade pupils and Miss Josephine La Rue's first grade students. Speaker for the afternoon was Miss Beatrice Baxter of Los Angeles, vice-principal of the Audubon junior high school of that city, who spoke on "Child Growth of the Adolescent Age." Members of the association convened a half-hour early for an enjoyable social hour at 2 o'clock. Officers installed during the business meeting include Mrs. Walter Taylor, president; Mrs. Afton Reinert, vice-president; Miss Ruth Williams, school principal, second vice-president; Mrs. Forrest Simonton, secretary; Mrs. Henry Van Delden, treasurer; Mrs. Kenneth Eldred, auditor; Mrs. Woodrow Barnett, historian, and Mrs. John Henry, parliamentarian. The group was installed by Mrs. J. Lee Rogers, council president, who presented a lovely corsage to each officer. Highlight of the gala affair was the presentation of a modern beaded glass motion picture screen from the P.-T.A. to the school. Graciously accepting the gift was Miss Williams. Anniversary of A. Schumachers Celebrated Sunday Jr. Hi-Y's Discuss Future Plans at Joint Meeting A vivid description of life in the Hawaiian Islands by "Bernie" Bernard, two colored moving pictures of South America, and an announcement of an over-night party, highlighted the regular monthly program-meeting of the Junior Hi-Y groups at the Little Theater in the local high school building last Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Jerry Patton, executive secretary of the Anaheim YMCA, presided. Bernard, a nine year resident of Hilo, large Hawaiian city, presented a dynamic running commentary complete with colored slides. He told of the large number of racial groups and mixtures and emphasized their ability to work together. Graphic descriptions of the island areas damaged during the bombardment of tidal waves were also featured. Moving picture shorts shown were "Our Neighbors to the South," revealing YMCA activities in South America, and "South Americans All," depicting the life and customs of the peoples in different sectors. Slated for May 10, the gala over-night party is tentatively scheduled to be held in Irvine park. Varied athletic contests will be "spot-lighted" if announced. Nine groups attending included the five local Hi-Y clubs, two from Grove, one from Hale Beach and one from View school district. Anaheim leaders are Wells, Paul Demaree, Fiedo, Walter Schmitt Rowe. NEW GRA-Y CLUB AT MAGNOLIA SCHOOL Another Gra-Y club, in the Anaheim school district just recently been organized by Magnolia grammar schooler for the group of four and sixth graders is Navleighton Spadone of Staher of one of the members. MONTANA PICNIC The Montana State Long Beach will hold its picnic at Bixby park in next Sunday, Aileen DeVoretary, announced. All Mons are cordially invited. Schumachers Celebrated Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schumacher of Anaheim were honored on their fifth wedding anniversary, April 3, with a dinner party presented by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schumacher of Orange at their spacious home, 1504 East Chapman, last Sunday. Festivities began in the afternoon with the Mesdames Schumacher greeting more than 15 close friends and their children from Orange. Also present were the honorees' two children, Susan and Steven. A delicious fried chicken dinner was enjoyed, highlighted by a beautiful white cake topped with lighted candles and inscribed "Happy Anniversary, Albert and Vangie." Humorous note was found in the clever table napkins which pictured a "hubby" paddling his spouse, captioned "Slappy Returns." The suggestion of an electric clock was given with a monetary gift from the group. Card games and conversation concluded the evening's entertainment. GOP Women Will Meet Tomorrow The Republican Women will hold a luncheon-meeting, tomorrow, Friday, at 12:30 o'clock at Dorothy and Wade Parker's new restaurant, 1418 East Center street.
