He has changed the name to Aggie's Sports & Hobby shop. Agajanian climaxed his foot ball career with a successful season this year as end for the Pittsburgh (Pa.) Steelers of the National professional league. During his three years in the Army Air Corps, he also played with the Hollywood and San Diego professional elevens. Prior to entering professional football ball, Agajanian played two years with the University of New Mexico, under coaching of Ted Shipkey, brother of Art Shipkey, Anaheim oil dealer. He also was a member of the football squad during his two years at Compton Junior college and three years at San Pedro high school. "Aggie's" specialty is kicking field goals, and it is known to his friends that he has overcome a handicap there that would have dismayed a less determined man. While attending university in New Mexico, he suffered loss of all toes on his "kicking" foot in an elevator accident. Instead of letting that end his career, he obtained a shoe, especially built to compensate for the injury, and went on to successful conclusion of his university career, and to earn a name in professional circles for the unerring aim of that built-up boot. Agajanian also is well-known in tennis circles. He plans to add equipment for stringing tennis rackets immediately and to offer expert service and advice to followers of that sport. He also will enlarge the stock with high grade sports equipment of all sorts. His home now is in Santa Ana, but he is moving his family to Anaheim this week, and will occupy living quarters in the store temporarily. Nearly 52,000,000 toothbrushes were shipped from United States factories during the first quarter of 1945. The "Buy a Big Bag Full" line was supported by people who featured small-size vans in five and eight-pound bags most all such packages were up by either retailers or salers, as it was proved a ful of fruit to pack it in California before the long journey east. Supporting the work on sumer advertising and the forts of salesmen in the mast was a strong direct-mail paign to wholesalers and customers Normally, the exchange have had a strong force on chandizing men on the job all but six of the 65 employees in 1941 were either in the services or assigned to other tasks to take the place of men to service. As the first valencias began roll to market, they had the support of the extensive advertising program. More than exchange fruit had the sales support of 56 experiential sales managers as many kets. EMBARGO WORRIES Bridging the thousands of between California and other markets was another her task. Car shortages brought shipping embargoes, which kept fruit from moving either kept it from going into specified markets. Unfortunately, these embargoes came at height of the shipping season. Shortages of ice made difficult to adequately protect during sweltering summers and much decay was reported many instances. The fact tha Marketing 1945 Citrus Crop A Tribute to Cooperation By PAUL S. ARMSTRONG. General Manager California Fruit Growers Exchange Few years have been so eventful for the California citrus industry as 1945. Wartime regulations, shipping embargoes, price ceilings, material and labor shortages, have been with the industry for four years but this summer the "largest smallest" crop in valencia history—largest volume and small sizes—added more complications. Successful handling of the 1945 valencia crop is a tribute to cooperation—cooperation of individual growers and association of organizations working together toward a common goal. The small valencias kept the industry from setting a new high in returns, but without cooperation the result might well have been disastrous, instead of the second best year in history. When it first became apparent only last winter that the industry was faced with marketing its first unusual crop, the California fruit Growers exchange begananning to completely utilize the next harvest. It was obvious that the heavy volume of extremely small fruit could not be moved through fresh fruit channels alone. Consequently, plans were divided into two clearly defined groups: first, to sell all possible fruit on the fresh market; second, to successfully process and sell all fruit it would not bring a satisfactory return in fresh form. The crop presented new problems to everyone, from picker to pressman, in the consuming marsh. Without the help of Mexican nationals and other imported workers, harvest of the crop could have been impossible. Approximately 10,000 nationals accounted for better than 60 per cent of the picking labor; a job trade tough by the heavy volume of tomatoes small fruit. Building Permits Set New Record Continued from Page 1 especially residential property, are holding off taking out building permits until they are assured that both material and labor for their job is to be obtained. News that the Reconstruction Finance corporation will offer for sale in the immediate future some 50 million dollars worth of lumber and other building materials being held by the Army at San Bernardino is having a marked favorable effect on attitude toward construction locally, as elsewhere throughout the district. Anaheim building material dealers are seeking to obtain a share of the supply for relief of the serious shortage of housing here. If the stock is evenly divided throughout Southern California, it will have a noticeable favorable effect, industry and civic leaders confidently declare. QUESTION DISTRIBUTION "Fifty million dollars is a lot of dough in anybody's language," one local authority on building matters commented. "That much material will build a lot of houses. If they don't let the big fellows and the big communities gobble it all up, a lot of our most pressing problems will be no more." Most of the San Bernardino stock pile is stored in the National Orange Show Exposition building there. Surveys of its contents were begun late last week by J. C. Haidinger, special RFC agent with headquarters in Los Angeles. It is reported that the huge stock of material was kept from public knowledge until pressure for its release was brought to bear in Washington by local groups most vitally interested in... The crop presented new problems to everyone, from picker to pressman, in the consuming marsh. Approximately 10,000 nationals accounted for better than 60 per cent of the picking labor; a job trade tough by the heavy volume extremely small fruit. Many Problems Packing houses had to install more sizing equipment, if they could find it on a barren market. Shortage of packers aggravated the problem, because the small fruit size, the more packing work required. Packing house managers were beset with hundreds of details, each of which often offered a severe test to quality. Shortage of boxes, constant short time bugaboo, was an ever present threat during the summer. Only because the Fruit Flowers Supply company was in position to supply a heavy perage of shook needs, was it possible to end the season without losing fruit for lack of containment. Field and packing house activities was no more feverish than sales promotion and advertising plans. The first of these called preliminary discussions with leading chain and independent retail grocers in January. These meetings were followed in April at conferences with the retail and wholesale leaders in every part of the country. Exchange advertising and merchandising plans were presented and suggestions were solicited. By the last of May, the entire valencia advertising and merchandizing campaign was complete and ready to go into action. Overtising Plan Keynote of the campaign, large in Sunkist history, was designed to tell the consumer of the shortage of large fruit and high quality of small sizes. Buy a Big Bag Full" was headed in thousands of Sunkist newspaper and magazine advertisements and on display material in retail stores. Grocers were urged to display oranges in large bulk displays and to price them multiple units of pounds or dozens. The "Buy a Big Bag Full" headline was supported by grocers who featured small-size valencias five and eight-pound bags. Almost all such packages were made as seasonal fruit in great volume began to offer heavy competition. Then the influx to by-products began in earnest. Fortunately there was a strong demand for citrus fruit juice products from government agencies. For the past three years, 90 per cent of the oranges sent to the exchange Orange Products company have been used for juice products and almost 60 per cent of such products have been for government purchase. This demand enabled processing plants to pay a good price for products fruit, but the volume of fruit sent to such plants severely taxed their capacity. Only by allocating the total products fruit supply to all of the plants in southern California was the job accomplished. When the season closed, processors could well sit back and look proudly at their work. They had taken almost all of the fruit not salable as fresh. They had successfully processed it and had shown a good return on it. Once again the value of orderly marketing through proration of snipments was amply demonstrated. The condition prevailing in 1945 was exactly the reverse of 1944, when there was a scarcity of fruit and proration gave more equitable distribution of available supplies. During the strong June and early July market of this past season, there were shippers who urged the prorate be lifted to allow a free movement. When the market broke, it became evident that orderly marketing was essential and proration helped the market to recover quickly from its late July low. As the last car of valencias moved to market early in December, the industry could survey a job well done. A job which many declared impossible at the start of the season had been accomplished. A volume of small oranges had been sold to consumers who had money to buy big fruit and wanted big fruit. All of the handicaps had been surmounted through cooperation. Successful marketing of the 1945 valencia crop was not accomplished entirely in 1945. It started years ago in 1893, when citrus growers first turned to cooperation to solve their problems. It developed through the intervening 53 years as cooperating growers met new problems successfully. Any man who doubts the effectiveness of cooperation in the citrus industry has only to consider what would have happened last summer with 90,000 it all up, a lot of our most pressing problems will be no more." It is reported that the huge stock of material was kept from public knowledge until pressure for its release was brought to bear in Washington by local groups most vitally interested in housing matters. Weather conditions which rendered unfit much of the smaller pile, recently released at Port Hueneme, apply to the material stored at San Bernardino remains to be determined. Much of the former material was found to have been cut into short lengths suited for military use, but which rendered it unfit for civilian construction. State Treasury In Good Shape Continued from Page 1 and to the highway fund, $12,-000,000. These transfers were partially offset by return to the general fund of $25,000,000 transferred to the war catastrophe reserve fund during a prior year. The net total of these special transfers made during the first five months of the 97th fiscal year was $18,908,-150 less than the total of comparable transfers made during the same period last year. During the corresponding period last year, $75,000,000 was transferred to postwar employment reserve fund and $33,060,000 to the teachers retirement system. An apparent decrease of $4,-295,854 occurred in bond interest and redemption. This, however, was a technical decrease resulting from the fact that funds to meet January bond maturities have in previous years been advanced to the fiscal agent in November, whereas pursuant to 1945 legislation, such advances are now made in the month of December. These, together with other smaller decreases, were partially offset by increases in expenditures for other functions, resulting in a net total decrease of $6,344,136. Navy Raincoats To Ease Shortage Acute shortage of raincoats reported in many retail stores throughout the west will be alleviated through immediate nationwide sale of nearly 900,000 The "Buy a Big Bag Full" headline was supported by grocers who featured small-size valencias five and eight-pound bags. All such packages were made by either retailers or wholesalers, as it was proved wasteful of fruit to pack it in bags in California before the long, tough hurry east. Supporting the work of consumer advertising and the efforts of salesmen in the markets was a strong direct-mail campaign to wholesalers and retailers. Normally, the exchange would have had a strong force of merchandizing men on the job, but but six of the 65 employed in 1941 were either in the armed services or assigned to other jobs to take the place of men called in service. As the first valencias began to fail to market, they had the full support of the extensive advertising program. More than that, change fruit had the personal ties support of 56 experienced managers is as many marrials. BRIDGING THE thousands of miles between California and eastern markets was another herculean task. Car shortages brought on shipping embargoes, which either kept fruit from moving entirely or kept it from going into certain specified markets. Unfortunate these embargoes came at the right of the shipping season. Shortages of ice made it difficult to adequately protect fruit during sweltering summer days, and much decay was reported in any instances. The fact that the successful marketing of the 1945 valencia crop was not accomplished entirely in 1945. It started years ago in 1893, when citrus growers first turned to cooperation to solve their problems. It developed through the intervening 53 years as cooperating growers met new problems successfully. Any man who doubts the effectiveness of cooperation in the citrus industry has only to consider what would have happened last summer, with 20,000 growers, each trying to work alone, picking, packing and marketing their tremendous crop.
