St. Michael's
Church to Have
Yule Programs
The rector, Rev. John K. Saville, and members of St. Michael's Episcopal church have planned a number of events for members of their parish, these to be observed during the Christmas holidays.
The first of these events is a Christmas party for the church school to be held on Saturday afternoon from 3 until 4:30 p.m. The program as planned will consist of recitations, skits, songs, etc., by each class; colored pictures of the Christmas story with the highlight of the party being the appearance of Santa Claus distributing gifts from the large Christmas tree with gifts for all children of the church school. The party will close with the serving of refreshments.
On December 24, Christmas Eve, beginning at 4 p.m., a carol-candlelight service for the entire family will be held. The new Junior choir of the church will lead the music and there will be an offertory solo by Natalie Norris, who will sing "Ave Maria" by Schubert.
Beginning at 11 p.m., Christmas Eve, fifteen minutes of special music will be given by the church choir, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Thomas Fisher. A violin solo, Handel's "Largo" will be played by Ernest Zitzmann. Then at 11:15 the midnight Holy Communion service will be held with musical parts by John M. Morris in "D" Minor. The offertory solo, "Gesu Bambino" by Pietro Yon, will be sung by Miss Natallie Morris.
Last Wednesday was quite a day in the congressional shop. To "date" these columns, you must keep in mind that the copy is written about ten days before you see it in print. Did you think of that when you read what I said about the state department and General Hurley? That was written on the 4th, for release on the 13th, and it was not until the 6th and 7th that the story broke wide open as the result of the Senate hearing.
The "Wednesday" I'm talking about now means the 5th. At ten o'clock the Republicans had a conference, and adopted a statement of policy, to send to Chicago for the meeting of the national committee. I said in this column once that there were three good platforms, the Republican platform of 1856; the Bull Moose platform of 1912, and the Democratic platform of 1932, and I remarked that if was (and still is) a pity that the last named has been so little used.
This new "platform" isn't in the class of the above-named three. It is encouraging however to see that the elephant's blood is starting to circulate again. It is still weak in red corpuscles.
From there, I went to the White House while the President signed my bill to reimburse volunteers of the Spanish-American War, who enlisted under "General Order 40," for travel pay they were promised and never got. It's a small bill, but I'm pleased with it. Three times before an effort was made to put If some Spanish-War Vet Post in the District would to have it, as a souvenir, Phil it on. If more than one person interested you'll have to bet between you which one has most members who will buy by the bill.
Getting back to the hill, just in time to hear Represente Clare Boothe Luce take the six congressmen, three Washington and three from formia, to whom I referred-column of the 13th, and support of the communist in China sparked the Hurler ignation. If anyone read therence I gave (Page 11174 Congressional Record of November 26th) I hope they also read page 11662 of the ord of Wednesday, December (Since then Mrs. Luce and De Lacy have had another set-to in which the gentlewomen from Connecticut listed herponent's past connections: 11871 and again page 11875 Record for Friday, December.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
This quotation from I Chronicles is the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston: "Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations." The question "Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?" is the subject.
A Scriptural citation in the Lesson-Sermon is from I Peter: "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; ... Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy... For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass witheredeth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth forever."
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to Class or above-named three."
Three times before an effort was made to put a bill like this through, each time unsuccessfully. This time, handling it as I learned to handle bills at Sacramento, there was no objection and no question raised in the House nor in the Senate, nor in either committee.
The President signed with four pens, and gave one to each of us: Congressman Engle of California, chairman of the War Claims committee; Senator Ellender, chairman of the Senate Claims committee; Captain Tony Siminoff of Los Angeles, president of the "G.O. 40 Association," and myself as the author of the bill. The President is very human.
What shall I do with the pen?
Young People of St. Michael's Sing Carols, Have Party
The Young People's Service League of St. Michael's Episcopal church enjoyed a Christmas party on Sunday evening, December 16th, at the home of Mrs. Willard Olding, leader of the group, on Winston road.
Preceding the party, the group sang Christmas carols for patients at the Orange county hospital and they also left a number of gifts for the children confined there. The caroling included old favorites and special requests of the patients. Accompanying the carolers were Ernest Zitzmann on the violin.
For the party later in the evening, the group enjoyed humorous games and a community sing. Freshments were served to Joan Jackson, president of the choir, Kathleen Austin, Norma and Donna Culbertson, Pat Mann, Eileen Wharton, Terry Kilduff, John Jackson, Sally Olding, Marilyn Daigle, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Zitzmann, Mrs. James Kilduff, Mrs. R.W. Balch and the Rev. and Mrs.John Kimball Saville.
