ANAHEIM GAZETTE Member Weekly Newspaper Ass'n of Orange County HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Publisher 1887-1935 Mrs. Henry Kuchel — Theodore B. Kuchel Editors and Publishers The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, California. Phone 2206-2207. Entored as second-class matter at the Post Office at Anaheim, California, under the Act of March 8, 1897. Subscription Per Year, $2.00; 2 Years, $3.50; 6 Months, $1.25 BILL OF RIGHTS Dec. 15 marks the 154th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights, those mighty first ten amendments to the Constitution which, through the years of trouble and turmoil, have assured to America freedom of the press and to every citizen, however great or humble, the right to think, speak and worship as a free man. But we must remember that these liberties are not in themselves permanent. They can endure only so long as we cherish and defend them unceasingly. Democracy does not exist magically in space. It is linked to the practical reality of our lives—our homes, businesses, churches and schools. Therefore, we must live democracy if we want democracy to live. We cannot indulge in conduct toward any group of Americans because we don't like their color or their nationality, and at the same time expect that our rights under the Constitution will be protected. Every time we attempt to put some other person's rights in jeopardy, we jeopardize our own. A quarter of a million of America's finest young men made the supreme sacrifice in the last few years to crush international hoodlumism and establish a sense of decency in the world. It would be ironic indeed if after that sacrifice, race or class hatred were to become rampant right here in our own country. Today the Bill of Rights stands as a beacon light to the world indicating that justice, freedom and equality are the only basis for a lasting peace. Let us keep that light burning brightly within our hearts for that is the only IN THE DAYS DECEMBER 31, 1870 Christmas eve and day in Anaheim were celebrated with open house and boundless hospitality. Friends joined friends and many families whose scattered members had been absent for a year joining again around the well-spread tables. The occasion was one reunion, merrymaking and giving of presents, and we certain that the "inhabitants" no city in California had a merrier, happier Christmas. From the Halls of Momus came for ye Mystique Krue of Comos, and no little amusement was created by their grotesque appearance—the homes of our citizens. A cuss passing by the name Sterling visited and "bilked" town last week. He stated he had $200,000 to invest in real estate. Among the purchases he bought five square miles of Glassel tract, and a section of neighbor, John Hanna. Suddenly he departed and it was found that he had given drafts for small sums on San Francisco, and received his coin here. One of drafts, amounting to $50, he rottily disposed of to Heimann George. On the 20th inst., the case JANUARY 2, 1896 That our orange groves will doubtedly make a killing with their season's crop is illustrated. We cannot indulge in, or permit, tyrannical and abusive years to crush international hoodlumism and establish a sense of decency in the world. Let us keep that light burning brightly within our hearts for that is the only place where it can endure. MAY THERE BE HAPPINESS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD From the joys and happiness of our associations with our acquaintances and loved ones may we obtain the contentment and cheer so necessary for a successful Christmas. Although there may be many of our loved ones who will nor sit about the festive board at Christmas, or who may not be with us to enjoy the pleasures of the annual Christmas tree, may we feel their presence from the thoughts they may have of home and of our thoughts of them in distant lands.
