Sixteen Persons Formed Nucleus Of Bethel Baptist Sixteen persons affiliated with the Bethel Baptist church when it was organized by a small group of German Baptists meeting in the home of S. Hemmerling on Lincoln avenue for organizational purposes. Chairman for this first meeting was the Rev. John Berg and M. Hemmerling acted as secretary. The first affiliates with the church were the Rev. and Mrs. John Berg, M. Hemmerling, Mr. and Mrs. S. Hemmerling, Mr. and Mrs. G. Spingath, Mrs. E. Schacht, G. Schnelder, Mrs. Wedel, Mr. and Mrs. E. Bressel, Mr. and Mrs. J. Wedel and Mr. and Mrs. P. Berg. Rev. Berg was elected as pastor and served until 1908. The first building dedicated on April 12, 1903, valued at $2,000, stood on the site of the present fine edifice at the corner of South Lemon street and Broadway. Later the original church was rebuilt to meet the needs of the fast growing community. The present church building, valued at $40,000, was erected and dedicated in 1927 during the pastorate of the Rev. O. R. Schroeder and is considered one of the finest German Baptist churches. period of time was the Rev. Thomas Holmes Walker, who served his congregation for sixteen years and is now residing at San Clemente. During the past seventy-five years, a total of fifty-four elders have guided the spiritual and financial matters of the church. Through years, the Presbyterian church has been active in not only the Christian work of our city but in the progressive civic matters. This church was instrumental in securing the present Religious Education on Released Time that has been adopted in the local schools, also taking an active part in organizing the Young Men's and Women's Christian Associations and a number of worthy achievements. In February, 1945, 113 young men and three young women of the church were or had been in the service of their country. Of this number, two gold stars for Roger Annis and Ralph W. Oldfield were for the only members killed in action. One was reported missing in action, J. Donald Polhemus. Those who had received their discharges were Ewald F. Dargatz, Vance Gooden, Wesley Mendoza, Cordon Purdy, Russell Renner, Earl E. Smith, Jr., George W. Stirton, Edward J. Waters and possibly other members whose names were not available. 'Circuit Riders' Lay White Temple Church Foundation As was the custom years ago, "circuit riders" often brought the preaching of the gospel to the people of young, growing communities and such was the case of Methodism in Anaheim when, as early as 1875 two such "riders", the Rev. J. M. Campbell and Rev. Cowan, then known as the Los Nietos circuit, laid the first foundation for the Methodist denomination in this city. However, the real beginning came on September 10, 1887, when the Rev. D. O. Chamberlayne held the first services of his pastorate in what is now the "Roberts apartments" on the northwest corner of Lemon and West Center streets. Deciding his congregation needed a house of worship, he secured a lot on South Philadelphia street and, with his own hands and the use of a planning mill given by T. S. Grimshaw, added by a number of men who came to his aid, a spired and steepled church twenty-six feet wide and fifty-two feet long with a sixty-five foot steeple was completed in 1889. The first gift toward this realization was given by Sheldon other organizational uses. In 1930 an addition on the of the original present ewas built and was dedicated September of that year. This built by the Men's Bible class represents an additional imment. Pastor of the church now Rev. Hayden Swift Sears, reing the Rev. Thomas's L. Bu who is now pastor of the Adams Methodist church in Angeles. Sorrow was bre upon the membership of church last year when the w Rev. Burden was called hom the Master. Church of Christ Organizes With 17 Members The Church of Christ (Catholic Church) began In Anah with a membership of seven charter members back in when the present church was published in April of that y Through the past fifty-one ye ther church has grown to be of the outstanding Churches Christ in southern California. The church was organized Rev. Mr. Ward and since time nineteen ministers The present church building, valued at $40,000, was erected and dedicated in 1927 during the pastorate of the Rev. O. R. Schroeder and is considered one of the finest German Baptist churches. On September 21, 1930, a fine new pipe organ was placed in service. Following the pastorate of the Rev. Berg the next pastors to be appointed were Rev. E. Wiesle who served from 1909 to 1910; Rev. A. Rhode, 1911-15; Rev. M. Leuschner, 1916-25; Rev. O. R. Schroeder, 1925-38; Rev. H. G. Dymmel, 1938-44, and the present pastor, the Rev. Paul A. Neumann. Presbyterian Church Is First In Orange County The history of the First Presbyterian church runs closely in the vein of the history of Anaheim and Orange county, and with that of the Anaheim Gazette who joins with the members of this church in extending wishes for seventy-five years more of continued growth and community service to this church. On the eighth of February, 1870, a request signed by twenty-four residents of Anaheim and vicinity was sent to the District Secretary for Home Missions on the Pacific coast, asking for the organization of a Presbyterian church here. By June of the same year, Rev. L. P. Webber entered upon his duties as the pastor of the newest church. Also contained in the records is the notation of the baptism of the first infant, Margaret, infant daughter of Wm. M. and Alice Higgins on March 23, 1870. The First Presbyterian church of Anaheim was the first protestant church to be organized in Orange county, and the first Presbyterian church in this part of field were for the only members killed in action. One was reported missing in action, J. Donald Polhemus. Those who had received their discharges were Ewald F. Dargatz, Vance Gooden, Wesley Mendoza, Cordon Purdy, Russell Renner, Earl E. Smith, Jr., George W. Stirton, Edward J. Waters and possibly other members whose names were not available. Foursquare Church Begins With Tent Meeting A tent meeting, brought here by a group of people from Angelus Temple who called themselves "The Joy Bringers", was the beginning of the Foursquare church in Anaheim. Included in this group were the Rev. Roy Gray, Rev. Morrison and his wife, Rev. Sidney Correll and Rev. and Mrs. Proe and their daughter. Rev. Proe and his wife were the first to pastor the work. At the close of the tent meeting the group moved to the home of Mrs. Jones, corner of Vermont and Palm streets, and remained there until a suitable place of worship could be obtained. In a short while they were able to get a hall on East Center street, the present location of the Chop Suey Restaurant, their membership at this time being considerably larger. The first pastor of the local church was Dorothy Runyon whose mother accompanied her here and in a short time, a lot was secured and a church building was started at the corner of West Broadway and Manchester Boulevard, the present location. This was on March 7th, 1929. The present church building stands as a memorial to Frank G. Redmond, a faithful member who passed away in June, 1929. A short while before the lot for the present church was purchased, he was converted to the church and after the lot was purchased, Mr. Redmond being a contractor. The first gift toward this realization was given by Sheldon Littlefield, whose daughter, Mrs. Eva Boyd still resides in this city on South Olive street. He later became postmaster of Anaheim. Although an invalid, the wife of the pastor, Mrs. Chamberlayne, wanted to hear the sweet tones of a bell each Sunday so she sold her much prized plano and a bell was purchased for the tower. Her guiding spirit lived on in the church for many years after they were gone from here. Another feature of comfort for the members and friends of the church were the chairs and benches of varying sizes. Extensive improvements were made during the pastorate of Rev. George Haffen, first an extension of 16 by 24 feet and later another of 12 by 12 feet. New furnishings were provided for the interior in modern style and appointments with oak finished pews, electric lights and other luxuries. On June 10, 1908, John L. Pitner, presiding elder of San Diego district, rededicated the reconstructed church. Soon after this, the parsonage was built beside the church. The present magnificent ediface is the dream of the Rev. Harry W. White but was the achievement of his successor, the Rev. J. F. Humphrey who named it the White Temple Methodist church. During his pastorate the present parsonage at 506 East Center street was also purchased and paid for. The White Temple church was dedicated on April 11, 1920, by Bishop A. W. Leonard and represents an investment of $90,000. The original parsonage beside the church is now the Cottage Bungalow and is used for various church activities and worship, he secured a lot on South Philadelphia street and, with his own hands and the use of a planing mill given by T. S. Grimshaw, alded by a number of men who came to his aid, a spired and steepled church twenty-six feet wide and fifty-two feet long with a sixty-five foot steeple was completed in 1889. Dedication services were held in August, 1870, the $4500 church building being erected at the northeast corner of Los Angeles and Cypress streets. Later the church was moved to a location at the corner of Cypress and Emily streets, then in January, 1929, the congregation held its first service in the present Suhday school building at 310 West Broadway. Plans have been completed for the erection of a beautiful new edifice as soon as building conditions will permit, a $100,000 building being planned of the latest architectural design. On April 1, 1875, five years after its organization, the church had 38 members, and through the years has made a tremendous growth until in February, 1945, it had a membership of 850. Eighteen pastors have served during these years, the Rev. Stanley Frederick George, the last pastor, accepting a new pastorate at San Bernardino the past summer. A short while before the lot for the present church was purchased, he was converted to the church and after the lot was purchased, Mr. Redmond, being a contractor, drew the plans and supervised the building of the edifice. Other members of the church assisted in the erection of the building. The building being completed, the congregation moved into the church in May and his death occurred the following month. As a lasting memorial to him, Mrs. Redmond placed a large stained glass window in the church. Other pastors of the church have been the Reverends D. F. Meyers, Wesley Norgaard, Chas. Gaines, Billy Adams, Sam Miller, F. Gentry, Milton Smith, T. Pervis, Harry Fisher and the present pastor, Rev. James Harrison and their wives. Sunday school is maintained each Sunday morning with the regular worship services and prayer meeting on Wednesday evenings. The motto of the church is "A Stranger But Once." In 1930 an addition on the north of the original present edifice was built and was dedicated in September of that year. This was built by the Men's Bible class and represents an additional investment. Pastor of the church now is the Rev. Hayden Swift Sears, replacing the Rev. Thomas L. In 1860 the San Antonio church was dedicated on April 29 at what is now Yorba, the first in the county, exclusive of the old Spanish missions. The parish priest of the Old Mission church in Los Angeles often visited Anaheim and services were held in the home of the late Mrs. Theodore Rimpau, later moving to the adobe school building at Center and Los Angeles streets, after which a small church was erected on lots donated by the Anaheim Water company. The first recorded baptism in Anaheim was that of August Langenberger, whose father was prominent in founding this city and who erected the first mercantile store in what is now Orange county. Father Victor Forin, the first resident priest, renovated the small church building which was used for the next ten years, then an addition of a tower was made and a priest's residence was built. In 1902, a new church was erected at the corner of West Center and Palm street, the site of the present edifice. Additions in the form of east and west wings were built in 1919. Upon completion, the interior was redecorated and necessary fixtures purchased. In 1929, an organ was installed. The parish hall was built in 1924 on the ground where the old church and the original parish house had stood. The present rectory was built in 1911. On January 26, 1944, the long awaited and hard earned day of being free of indebtedness arrived and to celebrate this event, a mortgage burning ceremony was held with appropriate thanksgiving and praise for the accomplishments they had attained. Karafuto on the island of Sahkalin, holds Japan's most extensive forest lands. The parish hall was built in 1924 on the ground where the old church and the original parish house had stood. The present rectory was built in 1911. On September 15, 1930, the parochial school was officially opened with the Dominican Sisters in charge. Three schools are affiliated with the church: St. Boniface Parochial School, St. Catherine's Military School and Marywood Central Catholic High School. Organizations of St. Boniface include Altar Society, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1154, Young Ladles' Institute No. 109, St. Boniface Parent-Teachers association and others. Father Henry Gross and Father James Gallagher are resident priests here. Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Gross, the church groups are this year building a recreation hall in the northeast part of the city to be dedicated to the youth needs as another of its varied activities. Priests serving the parish here other than Father Victor Forin include Father P. Howe, Father F. J. Dubbel, Rev. Fr. Patrick Browne, who passed away Feb. 25, 1937, Father Charles O'Carroll, Father Charles Nevin, Father John Quatannens and the present Father Gross and Father Gallagher.
