FIRST CHURCH OF CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST The Golden Text of the Sunday lesson-Sermon in all branches of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is from Isaiah and reads: "How hath the oppressor ceased? PATTON leads church school of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, San Gabriel, California., in singing "Onward Christian Soldiers." The church is the one in which General Patton was baptized and confirmed. His sister, Miss Anne W. Patton, is one of the four members of the National council of the Episcopal church. WASHINGTON As Seen By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS There is a determining factor, in the present "investigation" of Pearl Harbor, which will have to be settled before the people learn the truth about that fiasco, which cost the homes of the nation more than 3000 casualties and gave the minds of members of the congress, has been increased by his appointment of three diden All three were appointed with out prior knowledge, and without the approval of the Republica minority members of the committee. One is the law partner. FIRST CHURCH OF CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is from Isaiah and reads: "How hath the oppressor ceased! The Lord hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the captain of the rulers." "Ancient, and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced" is the subject. An account from Matthew relates that there was brought to Jesus "one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb; and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself, how shall then his kingdom stand? But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." "Error will not expel error," says Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And she adds, "Christian Science is the law of Truth, which heals the sick on the basis of the one Mind or God." "We classify disease as error, which nothing but Truth or Mind can heal, and this Mind must be divine, not human." POWER OF THE BIBILE EVEN IN TIME OF WAR A missionary who recently returned to this country from the Philippines, where she was imprisoned in a Jap interment camp, tells of having seen another prisoner attempting to read his Bible at night by light of a bottle of fireflies. She also recalls a notice that appeared on the camp bulletin board: "It anyone finds a New Testament in Korean, please return to guardhouse. Japanese Sentry." MARRIAGE LICENSE Robert Gilroy Casey, Bakersfield, and Dora Edith Eggleston, Anaheim, were issued a marriage license at Santa Ana last week. There is a determining factor, in the present "investigation" of Pearl Harbor, which will have to be settled before the people learn the truth about that fiasco, which cost the homes of the nation more than 3000 casualties and gave the country its greatest naval defeat. Is the Pearl Harbor committee a judicial body, or an investigating body? You have read the cases on the committee, by various administration - supporting colunists; over the radio, and sometimes in the press. The speech of the postmaster general a few days ago is an illustration. This is all part of the present Washington picture. Criticism of the administration brings down on the head of the critic the full force of New Deal, and left-wing propaganda, including personal attacks, and the well known distortion of what was meant, or actually said. Coming back to Pearl Harbor. If the committee is a judicial committee, as the Democratic members wish to make it, then all it does is to consider material laid before it by the departments, through its own counsel. It makes its decisions from this material. If it is an investigating committee then the committee investigates the sources of the material and the reports, and all the papers and records incident to the Pearl Harbor attack and the several days before the attack. The committee in this case does not accept merely what is offered it, but makes sure that all material has been furnished and all supporting data are there. The chief counsel for the committee was selected by the Democratic majority, with the approval of the Republican minority. He is a former assistant attorney general of the United States. He seemed to be a disinterested choice. He has however supported the maneuver of the Democratic majority, to force the committee to act only as a judicial body. He has interpreted his job as one of preparing for the committee such records and material as have been furnished by the army, the navy or the state department. The question on this point, now in the minds of members of this congress, has been increased by his appointment of three aides. All three were appointed without prior knowledge, and without the approval of the Republican minority members of the committee. One is the law partner of the assistant secretary of state and since this executive department is one under investigation it is questionable whether prosecution, so to speak, should take the law partner of one of these defendants, as a member of this staff. The other two aides are even more interested parties, having been "borrowed" outright from two government agencies Without knowing anything of this... She also recalls a notice that appeared on the camp bulletin board: "If anyone finds a New Testament in Korean, please return to guardhouse. Japanese Sentry." MARRIAGE LICENSE Robert Gilroy Casey, Bakersfield, and Dora Edith Eggleston, Anaheim, were issued a marriage license at Santa Ana last week. Home heating without waste For every family, fuel conservation is a wartime "must." Make the most of all you get! Standard Burner Oils are completely distilled (purified). They provide complete combustion without waste—no carbon deposit or coke residue. Standard Furnace Oil for home furnaces; Standard Stove Oil for circulating heaters. A. H. ROHRS ANAHEIM, CALIF. PHONE ZEnith 2518 Your local representative for STANDARD OF CALIFORNIA ability of these men, and without questioning their honesty of purpose, it is certainly poor business to take as aides, in an investigation of such importance to the American people, three men who are so closely connected with interested parties. The investigation thus gets off to a questionable start. The administration, while giving out press releases affirming the desire to have a full and free investigation, has at the same time supported the committee majority in its attitude. The Republican minority consists of trained and competent "investigators:" Senator Ferguson was called the "one-man grand jury" in Michigan and by his personal integrity, and his perseverance, succeeded in sending dishonest public officials to jail. Senator Brewster is an experienced lawyer, and has served in both house and senate. Congressman Keefe of Wisconsin and Gearhart of California have the confidence of their colleagues and both are former district attorneys, trained in investigation and cross-examination. It is a basic question. I rise to remark that I think the people of the United States want this committee to be an INVESTIGATING committee.
