Retiring General Thanks Anaheim

ability before being placed on the inactive list.
"Thanks," says General.
In a letter to the Gazette, General Easterbrook thanks this newspaper and the people of Anaheim "for the intelligent, interested and worthwhile part it played in helping us carry forward our mission."
When, this base converted to a redistribution station and convalescent hospital, we were faced with the gigantic task of speeding the adjustment of our returning airmen to civilian life," he writes. "Our installations attempted to provide these men with skills, outlook and habits to facilitate their absorption into the non-military community.
"To a considerable degree, our success depended upon your understanding cooperation, which you offered in generous measure.
"As I relinquish my command, we wish to reiterate our gratitude on behalf of the thousands with whom you have worked, and to whom you have extended your courtesy. It was a considerable contribution toward the future strength of our nation."

Other pitchers and infielders already are out of the armed services also, and Manager Luke Sewel is loaded with 1946 talent. Last spring's problem, which he had to solve with only four regulars, now has resolved into one of stringing out the few jobs to best advantage.

General Easterbrook's case comes under a ruling that officers, once retired, who returned to active service, will be retired first, in reduction of the services.
An air ace in World War I, with seven kills on his record, General Easterbrook came out of retirement in 1940 to active duty, with rank of major. His son is a pilot, stationed in Tokyo.
"Speed," First Order
Easterbrook assumed command of SAAAB in April, 1944, while it still was training cadets. In November of the same year, the base was converted into a redistribution center and convalescent hospital. When separation was added to its other functions, General Easterbrook's orders were, "Get 'em out quick." Working seven days a week, the base cut through a backlog of 12,000 overseas veterans in record time. More than 18,00 men and women have received their discharges there since September 14.
The general doesn't consider himself infallible. When prisoners of war drew KP, General Easterbrook admitted that a mistake had been made and rectified the error. At the GI's "gripe session," he listened to complaints and criticisms. The men fired questions and, the General answered straight-forwardly, winning the nickname, the "GI's General."
In August, General Easterbrook invited UCLA to sponsor a conference at Santa Ana on needs of the returning serviceman. Four hundred delegates—representing education, business, labor, social agencies and religious groups—participated.
Many Decorations
General Easterbrook, who has made no plans as to what role he will play in civilian life, was among the first American military pilots to see wartime duty in 1917. He served with the RAF and the first U. S. Aero squadrons, winning the Distinguished Service Cross with an oak leaf cluster. The DSC was presented to Easterbrook by General Pershing.

Thanksgiving Past; Air of Christmas

Grocers will refill shelves bared by one of the heaviest buying rushes in several years. School children will continue to enjoy their long week-end, which extends until Monday.
Holiday's Origin
Behind us will be another observance of that first Thanksgiving, which history records was held by the Pilgrims, in gratitude for deliverance from starvation and massacre. In all, pre-Revolutionary colonies held nine such observances.
On eight other occasions, the Continental Congress decreed public Thanksgiving for victories by Washington's ragged troops when slim hope for American independence hung by a slender thread.
Now, Anaheim turns to preparation for observance of an older event, which caused a star to shine down on a manger in a faraway land.

The 1943 legislature increased state support of elementary schools about $6 to approximately $66 per pupil, the analysis states. The following year, the people raised the figure to about $80.
This year’s distribution plan calls for a larger share of the added state support for districts with a low assessed valuation than for those with larger valuation per pupil, the association said.

47-Million-Dollar Benefit, Claim For New Power Contracts Signed By Metropolitan Water District
Oiccial word came from Washington this week that Secretary of the Interior Ickes has approved three Boulder dam power contracts that will result in financial benefits to the people of the Metropolitan water district totaling approximately $47,000,000 over and above the returns that could have been expected under contracts now in effect, according to Julian Hinds, Metropolitan manager and chief engineer.
Areas comprising the Metropolitan district are Los Angeles, Anaheim, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Compton, Fullerton, Glendale, Long Beach, Pasadena, San Marino, Santa Ana, Santa Monica, Torrance, and the coastal municipal water district.
Execution of the contracts assure industrial and domestic consumers of Southern California a large block of Boulder power at economical rates, it was pointed out by Metropolitan officials.
Hinds said he expects to execute the contracts immediately. Others representing the District in the negotiations leading to the formation of the contracts were Director Perry H. Greer, chairman of a special power committee, Chief Electrical Engineer James M. Gaylord and General Counsel James H. Howard.
Outlining provisions and benefits that will come to Southern California through the contracts, Hinds said:

"Under the new contracts, the Metropolitan Water district's unused firm energy at Boulder Dam and the equivalent of all of the district's energy from Parker power plant was sold to the Department of Water and Power of the City of Los Angeles, Southern California Edison Company, Ltd."
Early Start of G-E Buildings Here Indicated
That the General Electric Company plans early beginning of construction of two plants on the 12-acre site it owns here is indicated by a letter received by the chamber of commerce this week from N. H. E. Keel, G-E construction superintendent, will arrive in Anaheim December 10, the letter states. He will be followed by H. Colebank, field engineer, December 22, and by C. L. Carlson, field accountant, and W. H. Bycott, purchasing agent, December 31. Each will be accompanied by members of his family.
The company intends to obtain Fred Stockwell Dies at Home In Anaheim

"Increase in income includes approximately $32,000,000 from the sale of unused energy at rates higher than the rate for secondary energy at Boulder Dam; nearly $11,000,000 for use by other agencies of generating capacity at Boulder power plant, for which the district is obligated to pay but which would remain largely unused except for the proposed contracts, and more than $4,000,000 for transmission of energy for the Edison company by utilizing capacity in the district's aqueduct transmission system, extending from Boulder Dam to the Hayfield pumping plant, 126 miles west of the Colorado river.
Reason for Surplus
"The large block of unused Boulder power is made available for sale by reason of the fact that the Metropolitan Water district, in 1930, found it necessary to contract with the federal government for the purchase of 36 per cent of the firm energy from the dam, in order to obtain a permanent right to enough of this power to meet the ultimate requirements of Colorado river aqueduct pumping plants.
"The 1945 collateral contract gives assured use of the unused capacities of the district's generators at Boulder and it relieves the district of a heavy financial burden.
"Under the district-Edison contract the Edison company will be able to transmit a large block of Boulder energy 177 miles over the district's pumping plant power lines."
