State Lags as Winter Orange Supply Zooms to New Heights
California has fallen far behind Florida competition in supplying the winter orange market, and will continue to do so at an even increased rate within the next five years, despite the fact that production in 1950 will be double what it was 10 years ago, and 50 per cent above five years back.
These and other startling facts are revealed in a survey recently made by research staffs of the California Growers advertising and marketing departments.
The data collected by the investigators indicates the nation will be producing 63 million boxes of navels and other winter oranges by 1950. This is 15 per cent more than any single year's crop during World War II.
This year's crop is placed at 55 million boxes. In 1942, the figure was 42 million, and in 1935 it was 32 million.
Dropping Back
California ranked but slightly behind Florida in winter orange growing 10 years ago: 14,500,000 million boxes to 17,500,000. By 1940, East coast competition had stepped up 8,000,000 boxes annually, as against but 2,000,000 for California.
This year, Florida will lead California 38 to 17 million boxes, more than doubling our production, and adding 12,500,000 or practically 50 per cent, within the last five years, while California was showing but a 500,000-box increase, or about 3 per cent.
In the coming five years, according to the dismal picture painted by the forecast, California will add but a single million boxes more, to reach 18 million, which Florida zooms another 7,-000,000 to grab off 45 of the es
Electrical Store To Open Saturday
B. K. Davis, formerly of Los Angeles, will open a new electrical appliance store at 117 East Center street Saturday morning.
"That is my wife's birthday, November 17," he remarked. "I can think of no better time to launch a new business venture."
Included in the stock at present will be two of the better-known makes of radios, nationally-advertised appliances and other items, and additions will be made as rapidly as manufacturers can meet the post-war demand, Davis said.
He sold his appliance and furniture business in the southern section of Los Angeles last March, and he and Mrs. Davis have enjoyed a vacation while looking for a new location.
"We chose Anaheim because of its reputation as a wide-awake progressive community," Davis said. "We've been pleased, during the month we have been preparing for our opening, at the friendly attitude of the people."

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
Paul's declarations to the Corinthians will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Mortals and Immortals" in all branches of The Mother Church.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston: "Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. . . For this corruption must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."
"Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died," cried Martha to Jesus according to a Lesson-Sermon passage from John's Gospel. "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me though he were dead, yet shall he live: . . . Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. . . And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead, came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: . . . Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go."
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "Jesus said substantially, He that believeth in me shall not see death.' That is, he who perceives the true idea of Life loses his belief in death. He who has the true idea of good loses all sense of evil, and by reason of this is being ushered into the undying realities of Spirit."

Julces, Too
Citrus juice have shown an even more startling growth since 1935—from a mere 1,000,000 cases to 75 million, and may reach 100 million by 1950. The figure depends almost entirely on how long and at what rate the demand for the popular product of citrus fruit processing keeps on rising.
The California citrus industry has many things to consider as it visions the things that are to be, now blurred behind the veil of the future. Improved culture and harvesting practices, increased acreage, pest control, labor and other problems all enter into the picture.
Final solution must come quickly, leaders of the industry believe, if the state is to maintain a rightful place as time brings progress in winter orange production and marketing.

Parker House Cafe
Here Is Purchased
By Former Ohioans
Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Menke,
former. Akron, Ohio, cafe owners,
and their son-in-law, G. A.
Hedges, a resident of Long Beach
the last year, have purchased the
Parker House, 122 East Center,
and took over active management
last Monday.
The present owners, Mr. and
Mrs. W. W. Parker, 1418 East
Center street, who have operated
the restaurant the last two years,
plan to remain in Anaheim and
probably will engage in business
here. However, Parker said, they
are not as yet ready to announce
their future plans.
The Parkers have been in the
restaurant business in Anaheim more than three years. They purchased the cafe, which they renamed the Parker House, from Carl Oelke.
The new owners, who operated
a restaurant in one location in
Akron 15 years prior to coming
to California a few weeks ago,
plan to continue the business under its present policy. They will make their home in Anaheim,
and are residing at the Valencia hotel pending arrangements for a suitable residence.

the largest volume of fruit in the history of this modern cooperative was marketed well and successfully.
Despite shortages of labor and materials—despite the unprecedented volume of small sizes, Mutual Orange Distributors accomplished the seemingly impossible. Through the complete cooperation of growers, packing houses, processing plants, sales department and management, the distribution of FRESH FRUIT and CANNED FRUIT was so balanced that the entire crop was moved advantageously.
It will pay you to investigate a cooperative proved able to handle the quick changes in distribution methods so likely to be needed in the postwar period.
