CHRISTIAN SCIENCE The Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Everlasting Punishment" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, is from Psalms and reads, "Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just." In his gospel Luke relates that Jesus said unto one sick with the palsy, "Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, ... Who can forgive sins, but God alone? ... Jesus ... said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy.) I say unto thee, Arise, ... And immediately he rose up before them, ... and departed to his own house, glorifying God." "Healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing in Christian Science," writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Further, she says, "Hatred, envy, dishonesty, fear, and so forth, make a man sick, and neither material medicine nor Mind can help him permanently, even in body, unless it makes him better mentally, and so delivers him for his destroyers." White Temple to Have Youth Worker At a regular meeting of the official board of the White Temple Church on the evening of October 23, it was unanimously voted to employ a trained youth worker to devote his time exclusively to the High School Youth of the church. Rev. Hayden Sears, pastor, consented to interview student ministers from nearby colleges in order, if possible, to secure some one to spend his week ends in Anaheim and to work with the present counselors, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Held. Since the Denominal Emphasis throughout Methodism this year is Evangelism, it was also planned to hold three definite Evangelistic Campaigns during the year. The first will be held in the fall with a Visitation Evangelism program, covering the White Temple constituency; the second to be a series of evening meetings beginning Feb. 4th, and continuing each evening for two weeks. Rev. Alex Nichols, pastor of the Asbury Methodist Church in San Diego, will be the visiting Captain Marion Mellette accompanied by his wife, the former Ruth Boney of this city, and their small daughter, left Saturday morning for Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he will enter staff and command schol for a four-months' course. Captain Mellette has been with the amphibian tractor units overseas and flew home from Okinawa last week. He expects a 30-day leave at the end of his training period and at that time he and Mrs. Mellette will take delivery on a new car in Detroit. From there they plan to visit relatives of Captain Mellette in South Carolina and to visit in New York before returning home. Mrs. Hattie Peck Passes Away Tues. Mrs. Hattie E. THEIR MANAGEMENT AND ASSISTANCE TO THE FAMILY HOUSE ON REINA IEM STATE OF NEW YORK,CITY OF NEW YORK,BANK OF AUTOMOBILE COUNTIES AND THEIR MANAGEMENT AND ASSISTANCE TO THE FAMILY HOUSE ON REINA I At a regular meeting of the official board of the White Temple Church on the evening of October 23, it was unanimously voted to employ a trained youth worker to devote his time exclusively to the High School Youth of the church. Rev. Hayden Sears, pastor, consented to interview student ministers from nearby colleges in order, if possible, to secure some one to spend his week ends in Anaheim and to work with the present councilors, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Held. Since the Denominational Emphasis throughout Methodism this year is Evangelism, it was also lainned to hold three definite Evangelism Campaigns during the year. The first to be held in the fall with a Visitation Evangelism program, covering the White Temple constituency; the second to be a series of evening meetings beginning Feb. 4th, and continuing each evening for two weeks. Rev. Alex Nichols of the Asbury Methodist Church in San Diego will be the visiting Evangelist at these meetings. The Easter season will see the completion of the campaign with a cooperative series of meetings. The Wesley Methodist church, Anaheim, the First Methodist Church, Garden Grove, and the White Temple will combine for this effort. Rev. Hayden Sears, pastor of the church, reports that the Sunday school has reached the highest point in five years time, and that the Sunday evening program at White Temple has grown encouragingly. Mr. Sears announced a new series of morning sermon topics for the month of November under the general theme of "God and America." Nov. 4th, "Do We Worship the Gods of Our Defeated Enemies?" Nov. 11th, "Is America Turning To God?" Nov. 18th, "Thank God for America." Nov. 25th, "America Now It's God's Turn." Fifth of an Inch In First Rainfall What was heralded beforehand as "the first real rain of the season," served more to dampen the pre-Hallowe'en spirits of festival backers than to wet the ground. Beginning with a light sprinkle shortly before Sunday midnight, rainfall continued intermittently into Tuesday night. Total precipitation when the sun came out Wednesday morning registered 18 inches in the rain guage of the Anaheim Union Water company at Placentia. Saturday morning. Born in Stockton, Chautauqua county, New York, on Nov. 4, 1841, she would have been 104 years old next Sunday. When she was nine years old, she moved with her parents to Illinois, which was then frontier country. In 1870, the family again moved, this time settling in Anaheim, arriving here on October 12, 1870. Upon her marriage to Simeon Tucker, her father gave them a 20 acre plot, opposite the family home, as a wedding present. However, they did not settle here at that time but moved to a home near Newhall, where they engaged in the bee business. Years later, they returned to Anaheim and when Mrs. Tucker was 65, they set out 2500 citrus trees and enlarged the original acreage until they owned one of the finest groves in the vicinity. In late years, Mrs. Tucker busied herself making quilts and crocheting rugs, many of which she exhibited on her one hundredth birthday and each year thereafter. Two children, Earl Tucker of Anaheim, and Mrs. Lottie Stevens of Los Angeles, survive her. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Hilgenfeld chapel, with Rev. Estelle Anderson, pastor of the Good Hope Spiritualist Church of Anaheim officiating. Burial was in Anaheim cemetery. A 30-day leave at its training period, and he and Mrs. Mellette Committee to Aid USO Housing Head Named By Mayor Already facing a knotty problem and anticipating increased activities ahead in providing housing for all who look to them for assistance, Mayor Charles A. Pearson, acting as chairman of the Anaheim USO, has named an advisory committee to aid in the work of the organization's housing service here. The post of chairman goes to Mrs. M. P. Thaxton, director of the service, who has given without reservation of her time and effort to the service to make it the success it is. So efficient has Mrs. Thaxton been that Chaplain Robert Gordon of the Las Alamitos Naval Air station, in an address at the American Legion post's Navy Day meeting here last week, said "When we in the service think of Anaheim, we think of Mrs. Thaxton and the aid she has given to service men and to their families." As other members of the committee, Mayor Pearson announced: Mrs. Margaret Boysen, Mrs. Gladys Woodward and Mrs. Hazel Lowden, with either Mrs. Charles Griffith or the mayor acting as the fifth member. Increased demands on the housing service, as a result of the greatest number of men now being discharged from the armed services, prompted Pearson's ac- Sidewalk Cyclists Warned By Police Complaints are reaching the police against practice of riding bicycles on the sidewalks, especially in the residential districts of the city. J. Van Houten of 504a East Sycamore street reports that his 4-year-old son, James, was knocked down by sidewalk cyclists and his head so badly injured that several stitches were required to close the wound. The city ordinance against such practices is rigidly enforced in the business district, but the situation is more difficult to control in the outlying districts. Offenders are subject to penalties provided by law, the officers point out. 'Cubbers' to Have Roundtable Meet For November 5 Cubmasters and Cub Pack Committeemen will be interested in hearing that a Cubbers Roundtable will be held on Monday, Nov. 5th, at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Elks Club, 510 North Sycamore Street, Santa Ana. This will be an interesting and instructive meeting and one that all cubmasters and pack committeemen should attend. The agenda will have five topics—Den Chiefs, Den Dads, and Committeemen, Den Mothers, Monthly Pack Meetings and a "problem clinic." The meeting will be led by R. C. Increased demands on the housing service, as a result of the greatest number of men now being discharged from the armed services, prompted Pearson's action. Requests from wives and families of local men still serving overseas already are overtaxing the ability of one person, he explained. According to the figures received from Mrs. M. P. Thaxton, director of the Anaheim USO housing service, 118 applications were received for housing during the month of October, with only 48 placements. Breaking this down we get the following figures: applications from services (all branches) 61 with 25 placements; veterans' applications, 37, with seven placements; Los Alamitos applications, 20 with 16 placements. The large proportion placed at Los Alamitos is due to the fact that soldiers and their wives are moving out of single rooms with cooking privileges and since most of the Los Alamitos applicants were also childless, they were able to move into these same rooms. The really deplorable situation is the one concerning housing for our returning veterans—only seven placed out of 37. These are the boys to whom we gave the rousing send-off when they left for service; we promised them we'd be here when they returned. These are the boys who fought and bled and sweated it out for us—and we are still here but we don't seem to remember so well. These veterans and the permanent parties at the base are requesting houses or apartments. Over half of them have one or more children from whom they have been separated for some time. Surely if any one deserves a house it is these men. There are always some rooms, both with and without cooking privileges, but nothing to offer the veterans and those permanently attached to the base. In addition to the veteran applications left unfilled for October, there are between 25 and 30 applications left over from September. MR. AND MRS. The agenda will have five topics—Den Chiefs, Den Dads, and Committeemen, Den Mothers, Monthly Pack Meetings and a "problem clinic." The meeting will be led by R. C. Campbell, assistant scout executive, and will undoubtedly be of great help to all those interested. Dog Kills Eight Rabbitts Dogs raided the rabbit pens of G. F.
