AAA FARMER CALIFORNIA TOMATO PROCESSING HIGH California has surpassed Indiana to become the leading tomato-producing state in the nation. The 1945 estimated total tomato acreage, according to the crop reporting service, is 160,000 of which 127,000 acres are expected to be used for canning purposes. The balance of 33,000 is for fresh market. Nearly 1,000,000 tons were processed last year and present indications are that this year's yield will equal last year's but will miss the 1944 record acreage by four per cent. California AAA is currently considering applications for certification from 79 tomato canners, who filed their contracted acreage data with AAA by July 15. AAA is responsible for certifying canners who pay minimum support prices to growers and who contract for capacity tonnages. In turn, approved canners are protected on the disposition and price of their packs by the government. OTHER VEGETABLES COVERED In addition to tomatoes, the program covers processing of other California crops: spring and fall spinach, asparagus, table beans, carrots, lima beans, peas, ders from government purchased wheat stocks. Growing season for corn and other feed grains is not advanced enough to appraise next winter's feed supply and needs. Export of quantities of wheat as food for liberated countries discourages use of additional wheat for feed. However, there are no restrictions on use of wheat for food and it may be purchased wherever supplies of other grains are inadequate. Dairymen should plan to use alfalfa hay, as high protein content oilseed meals probably will be short this fall and winter. SPOT FARM NEWS: Washington has decreed that use of 2-4-D weed spray cannot be approved for chemical control of perennial noxious weeds under the 1945 agricultural conservation program. Congress has voted $50,000,000 to continue the school lunch program for the year beginning July 1, 1945. One farmer in Merced county has constructed 72 miles of fireguards on his dry rangeland. These fireguards pass by water stations so that water is readily accessible to firetrucks in case of fire. India's rice production is second only to China, yet before the war India imported more rice than any other country, mostly from Burma. India's 1944-45 rice crop is 12 percent lower than its 1943-44 record harvest of 2,291,838,000 bushels. Normal production is about millions Spent In County on Pest Control Now is the time for citrus to fight red, black and scale on citrus trees Agric Commissioner D. W. Center — Ph. 2206-2207 OTHER VEGETABLES COVERED In addition to tomatoes, the program covers processing of other California crops: spring and fall spinach, asparagus, table beets, carrots, lima beans, peas, pumpkins, and snap beans. A total of 148 certification applications have been filed by California canners in 1945. Orange county farmers have contracted with local canneries to have processed tomatoes. Spanish goes either fresh or to quick freeze. Other vegetables fresh. AAA RANGE PRACTICES CURB OVERGrazing California farmers who participate in AAA's range conservation program are disqualified for payment if their rangeland is overgrazed. Loss of forage because of fire, flood, severe drought or unusual insect invasion does not affect payment if the number of stock on the range does not exceed the grazing capacity set by the local AAA county committee. A spot check of grazing lands throughout the central part of the state reveals a high percentage of forage left for fall use. It is expected that few operators will lose payment for overgrazing in 1945. The grazing management plan encourages farmers to build fences, improve pumping facilities, construct pipe lines and durable storage for conservation of water supplies. Payment is made for lining earthen reservoirs and for building stock trails. These practices are planned to conserve grazing land and maintain adequate forage residues. Eligible ranches must have 640 acres or more grazing land, and the owners or operators must have discussed their grazing management plans with the AAA county committee and received prior approval for the practices they wish to perform. FEED WHEAT PROGRAM REMAINS UNCHANGED Clinton P. Anderson, secretary of agriculture, has announced that a proposed change in the feed wheat program will not be made now. California farmers will still be able to purchase feed wheat through AAA. India's 1944-45 rice crop is 12 percent lower than its 1943-44 record harvest of 2,291,858,000 bushels. Normal production is about two billion bushels. U.S. rice production is less than 2 per cent of the world supply... This year there will be enough canned fruit juices so that we can each have 10.4 pounds, according to a USDA report. This is 3 per cent more than the 1944 per capita consumption. Program Planned For Poultrymen Under the able leadership of Wm. V. Heiss, poultryman of Orange and newly elected chairman of the poultry department of the Farm Bureau, an executive committee meeting was recently held at his home on North Batavia street. Committee appointments were made as follows: program, E. F. Zimmer, Anaheim, and L. M. Turner, Santa Ana; legislative, E. J. Campbell, Orange, and A. H. Heinemann, Orange; statistics and poultry practices, A. L. Wolfert, Anaheim, Olin Cramer, Anaheim, and W. M. Cory, Santa Ana; public relations, W. M. Cory, Santa Ana; membership, Elmer Humphrey, Fullerton. Officers of the department are: chairman, W. V. Heiss; vice-chairman, Elmer Humphrey; director, A. H. Heinemann; and secretary, W. M. Cory, assistant farm advisor. The poultry industry has contributed tremendously to the total supply of protein food during the war. It will have to undergo some readjustments under peace-time. One of the big jobs anticipated by the department will be to assist the industry in making this readjustment with the least inconvenience. Consumers have learned to depend upon eggs and poultry meat to a greater extent than ever before. Rigid adherence to quality standards to retain favor of the customer will be the objective of the industry in the future. Buy MORE War Bonds. Brinkerhoff 308 E. 3rd Street Santa Ana, Californi Millions Spent on County on Pest Control Now is the time for citrus growers to fight red, black and purple scale on citrus trees Agricultural Commissioner D. W. Tubbs asserted in disclosing that millions of dollars was spent in the county last season in the fight against citrus pests. Every hour in which weather is favorable should be used at this time in the fight against the scale, he said. Commissioner Tubbs said that millions of dollars each year is invested in the county in pest control. The exact amount is difficult to gage because many farmers have their own equipment or own it jointly with other growers. County growers have employed the services of 121 commercial pest control operators who were licensed to do the work in the county and most of these were Orange county concerns. Some 100 such rigs were in operation during the 1944-45 pest control season along with some 20 or hard-type dusters. Tubbs explained that the equipment necessary to do such a large amount of work on the county's 6,000,000 trees is short enough but labor is still the governing factor in getting all of the groves treated. Most pest control operators are in dire need of manpower to help on the pest fight. The work is seasonal for bugs and insects are fought when the skill is most general. Walnut Growers Urged to Attend Vacation columns are like vacation meals: a little of this and a little of that; anything that's easily prepared and served, from the refrigerator, or from the notes accumulated on my typewriter table. Congress finally recessed on Saturday, July 21. The house had been melting away for ten days before that. Various delegations of congressmen left for all parts of the world. It is a good idea, when the members take the trips seriously. I think they do. I said in this column (many years ago, do you remember?) that we'd better take the price of a battle-ship and send Americans to travel in other countries and see the problems of those countries, and have other nations send people here for travel and education. I had two chances to go abroad this summer, both in connection with agricultural conferences, but this year California looks better to me than any place in the world. There will not be much time at home. We reconvene Oct. 8. I must be back before then. On the 23rd I went down to the ways and means committee room to see Judge Vinson sworn in as secretary of the treasury. He will be the 51st secretary. Mr. Morgenthau, retiring, served 11 years under Roosevelt; Andrew Mellon served the same number under Harding, Coolidge and Hoover, but Albert Gallatin of Pennsylvania served the longest, 13 years, under Jefferson and Madison. It was quite a ceremony. The speaker presided; Senators Barclay George White and La Follette has come up step by step, serving locally in Kentucky (we'd call it district attorney) and in all three branches of the government. There must be a close working relationship between the branches, in the coming decade, if we are to pull successfully out of our present hole. In a way, I think the treasury department missed a great opportunity. The comment around here is that young General Elliott Roosevelt should have been made the secretary of the treasury. When a young man just starting out in the world can borrow $200,-000 from someone like Jack Hartford and then get Jesse Jones, without reimbursement, to pay it off for 2 cents on the dollar, and can borrow, in all, what appears to be a total of about three quarters of a million, his talents are obviously wasted taking pictures from an airplane. The national debt limit right now is 300 billion dollars, of which 261 billions have actually been spent. We took in 46 billions for the year just ended and spent 99 billions. We expect to take in 41 billions this year and spend 82½ billions. We have a per capita debt right now of $1,-856. Multiply that by the number of members of your household and you'll see how much your family owes. I wish we could pay that off 2 cents on the dollar. The per capita debt for each worker in a family is $4,-117. I can recall the year when congress passed the first budget bill totaling one billion dollars, and Of work on the county's 6,000,000 acres is short enough but labor is still the governing factor in getting all of the groves treated. Most pest control operators are in dire need of manpower to help on the pest fight. The work is seasonal for bugs and insects are fought when the skill is most general. Walnut Growers Urged to Attend Meeting Saturday The biggest meeting of the year on the fast-waning walnut industry of southern California is the annual gathering of growers at the inter-regional meeting of Farm Bureau, C. J. Marks, secretary of the Orange County Farm Bureau, stated today in urging growers to attend. Marks stated that wage rates and harvesting methods will receive most attention at the meeting scheduled for Saturday at 11 o'clock at the Tustin High school and all growers are invited. Milton Frater, southern California section chairman of the edible nuts department of the state Farm Bureau will preside. Frater is a grower in the San Gabriel area. Twenty years ago the acreage of walnuts in Orange county had already declined by several thousands but there were still over 14,000 acres that brought in approximately $4,000,000 to the growers before the expenses of harvesting and processing were dedicated. Last year there were slightly more than 4,000 acres in production in Orange county and the income was slightly over $1,000,000 f.o.b. the packing house. The industry has been moving northward on the Pacific coast to where land and water costs are lower and yields are good. Citrus has been planted in almost all of the former walnut orchards. Rabbit Breeders Rabbit growers of Orange county have been invited to participate in a group meeting next Saturday morning at the Tustin high school at 10 o'clock, where an inter-regional meeting of Farm Bureau groups from the eight southernmost counties of California will convene. G. E. McCleary, state chairman of the rabbit section of the state Farm Bureau, will preside at the meeting. He's an Irrigation Expert! Reddy Kilowatt is just as good at operating an electric irrigation pump as he is at powering your vacuum cleaner or radio. In fact, Reddy is so dependable, efficient, and economical that nine out of ten farmers in Southern and Central California prefer. Reddy Kilowatt purchased electricity to any other power for pumping, feed grinding, and dozens of other difficult chores. Reddy has played an important part in helping the farmers of this area produce more food at low cost in spite of the manpower shortage. When new electrical farm equipment is available, there will be many new uses for Reddy Kilowatt service. He'll be ready, as always, for every task he is called upon to perform.
