Grafting a "button" mushroom to the root of a rubber plant, he got a "golf" ball that grew over night. Now he picks a bushel of "golf" balls every morning. The boys get their exercise and Lester gets his trotting down to the bank buying War Bonds. Before he sets out tomato plants he paints about fifty iron spikes with tomato juice and sticks them in the ground. After chewing on the spikes for a week the cutworm's cutter is so dull it can't cut off a plant. Then Lester sets out his tomatoes and the plants all live so he saves money to buy extra War Bonds. U.S. Treasury Department Lester Green, market gardener, doesn't get so tired working now. He trained a pair of turtles to walk up and down the rows while he feed. "Riding those turtles while I hoe saves me a lot of walking," says Lester, "and I'm never too tired to do my bit for the war, whether it's buying a BOND or talking at a bond rally." U.S. Treasury Department "If bigger chickens can be raised I'll raise them," said Lester Green poultryman, "I'll cross 'em with a stork." He did. Now his hens weigh forty-five pounds. LESTERS TACKS TAX THE JAPS "Spinach is a 'green' that is eaten by many yet relished by few," said Lester Green, market-gardener, "but I've found another use for its iron content. I've crossed it with a cactus plant. Now I'm raising enough carpet tacks to buy my wife several WAR BONDS. Maw says, 'The more BONDS I "tack" away brings us nearer to V-J DAY.'" U.S. Treasury Department "No matter how thin you slice it, doesn't always mean that it is baloney." says Lester Green. "I'm raising tomatoes in three-foot cellophane tubes for the restaurant trade.
