With his platoon's withdrawal blocked by enemy machine guns, he advanced alone and freed it. Crawling close to the enemy position under heavy fire, he threw a hand grenade and then rushed the Nips, firing as he went. Struck time and again, he killed two of the enemy and forced the others to withdraw before his last fall. The Medal of Honor was awarded him posthumously. U.S. Treasury Department AMERICAN HEROES by WOODY COWAN BOATSWAIN ALBERTO GALZA, Baltimore, Md., well deserves his Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal. When the SS Delisle was first torpedoed, he rescued the wounded third mate. In the second torpedoing, the Master of the ship was pinned down by a cargo boom. U.S. Treasury Department When a tanker rammed the SS Uruguay with 4700 troops aboard, Chief Officer Pardoe dropped into the pitch black flooded depths of his vessel and yanked trapped and injured men from certain death. Disregarding all danger, he directed the construction of a temporary bulkhead that enabled the ship to make port. U.S. Treasury Department AMERICAN HEROES by WOODY COWAN A SILVER STAR for gallantry in action has been awarded to Pfc. Julius Aschenbrenner, Pinckney, Mich. Although a member of a light machine gun section and therefore only armed with a pistol, Aschenbrenner advanced, with several riflemen under heavy fire to knock out a machine gun position in New Guinea. He helped still the enemy fire. Men like that must have weapons, food and clothing. The War Bonds you buy and hold will provide them. U.S. Treasury Department In the crushing advance of American Armies in France, T/Sgt. Frank M. Burford led a small group against a bristling machine-gun strong point, knocking out two emplacements and killing four Nazis. Later another position was routed and two killed. The group pushed on until halted by a Battalion Commander. Sergt. Burford, cited by the Army for gallantry in action, deserves the support that only War Bonds can furnish. Buy War Bonds. U.S. Treasury Department PARACHUTE Infantry Sgt. Ray E. Eubanks, La Grange, N. C., awarded a Medal of Honor posthumously, died after clubbing to death 4 Japs with his rifle in a machine gun and mortar nest. Going to the relief of a platoon isolated by the enemy in Dutch New Guinea, he crawled to the Nips' position, was wounded and his rifle crippled, but charged in, swinging.
