Warner, chairman of the board of supervisors, reported at the board meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Monday night, that the board has approved the plan for doing away with the present rural route system of numbering rural districts and will soon start work on a program of numbering houses by street and house number. He said that this could cost the county several hundred thousand dollars. The meeting was held at the Palm cafe in Santa Ana. Secretary of Chamber of Commerce E. W. Moeller attended from Anaheim. Announcement was made of the county-wide picnic that will be held at Irvine Park on July 27, sponsored by the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Roads to Romance Association, and Coast Association. Neighboring counties are being invited to participate. The event will mark the anniversary of the discovery of the Santa Ana valley and southland by Portola's expedition in the 1700's. LARGEST CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR CONVENTION CLOSES IN ANAHEIM Services Held for Evelyn Carlson Monday Afternoon Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Hilgenfeld chapel for Mrs. Evelyn Carlson, 54, who died early Thursday morning at St. Joseph's hospital after an extended illness. Rev. A. L. Horne, pastor of the Salem Evangelical church, officiated and burial followed at the Anaheim cemetery. The deceased was a native of England and a resident of California for 31 years. She was a member of the Salem Evangelical church. She is survived by her husband, Andrew J. Carlson of Orangewood avenue, Anaheim; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Knaak of Anaheim; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Wiard, and three brothers and one sister; all of England, and two grandchildren. Highlight of the Friday afternoon gathering was a high school oratorical contest, sponsored by the state high school department. Convention banquet was held Friday night and Saturday night there was a banquet in honor of war veterans. Both were held at the high school cafeteria. Saturday afternoon was devoted to a recreational program at the two city parks and Sunday noon an executive luncheon was held at the Parker House cafe. Delegates were housed in private homes in Anaheim, arrangements having been made by Mrs. Nan Moore, housing chairman. The First Presbyterian church of Anaheim with Rev. Stanley F. George as pastor, was host church for the convention. Anaheim churches participating in the convention included Bethany church, Bethel Baptist, Calvary Baptist, Foursquare Gospel, Assembly of God, Church of the Nazarene, First Church of Christ Free Methodist, Salem Evangelical, Wesley Methodist and the White Temple Methodist. MOVE TO ARIZONA Lieutenant and Mrs. James Peterson (Marjorie Steen) were in Anaheim recently for a brief visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Steen, before going to Phoenix, Arizona, where Lieut. Peterson is now stationed. They have been living in Merced, Calif. VISIT GIRL SCOUT CAMP Mrs. Arthur Roquet, Girl Scout commissioner, Mrs. Willam Bushman, Mrs. Ruth Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Taylor visited Girl Scout Camp LeRoy above Arcadia Wednesday of last week. Joining in camp activities they stayed overnight and returned to Anaheim on Thursday. VISITING HERE The young grandson and granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Spielman of West Broadway are enjoying a visit with her for the summer Plans Made for War Chest Drive Next October Plans for the 1945-46 War Chest drive were formulated on June 28 when all Community Chest chairmen in Orange county gathered at the Santa Ana Y. M. C. A. As in past years, the drive will get under way in October. War Chest quotas will remain the same in all communities and to this will be added the budgets of local home-front agencies to combine in one united effort the fall campaign for funds. Anaheim was represented at the meeting by Charles Griffith and Charles Hanson. Orlyn Robertson, county chairman, presided and introduced A. B. Ruddock, chairman of the California War Chest for southern California, who outlined the future of the war fund in the light of victory over Germany. He stressed the importance of continued effort to provide our military personnel with the services of the USO and War Prisoners aid. Hugh M. Wilcox, campaign coordinator, outlined plans for the county-wide drive. LeRoy Dixon, Dudley Blanchard and Joe Cantanich, field directors for the War Chest, conducted an open forum for a discussion of the problems involved and discussed publicity plans. J. Henry Lang, state director of the War Chest for California, gave an address on the humanitarian aspects of the work being done throughout the world. County Property Tax Up for '44-45 Property tax levies in Orange county for 1944-45 totalled $7,-343,111, compared with the $6,-735,931 levy for 1943-44, the California Taxpayer's association said today, making public its analysis of local tax levies. The levy in the county for county purposes totalled $1,798,-097 for 1944-45, compared with $1,720,249 for 1943-44. General city property tax levies totalled $1,635,662 for 1944-45, compared with $1,673,375 for the year before. Tax levies for the school districts in the county totalled $3,128,595 for 1944-45, compared with $2,126,170 for the preceding year. Special district tax levies amounted to $780,757 for 1944-45, compared with $716,137 for 1943-44. The property tax levy for 1945-46 is being determined right now by city councils, county boards of supervisors, and school boards throughout the state. The size of a local government budget sets the amount of the property tax levy. Preliminary local budget proposals for 1945-46 in many communities are considerably higher than they were for 1944-45. Unless they are revised downward, a considerably higher local property tax levy for 1945-46 threatens. Nursing College Among 52 graduates at the Queen of Angels College of Nursing were two Anaheim girls, Miss Celestine Lieb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Lieb of 207 North Claudina street and Mrs. Ruth Braneschi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Braneschi of 301 North Pine street. Commencement exercises were held on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 P'clock in the presence of their relatives, friends, instructors and a score of doctors from the hospital's staff. The ceremonies were held at Our Lady of Loretto church in Los Angeles. Red and white gladiolus and many tall white tapers decorated the church. The Most Rev. Archbishop John J. Cantwell officiated. The young graduates, wearing traditional white uniforms and caps, were escorted into the church single file by a military color guard consisting of Navy servicemen. Diplomas and the nurse's pin were presented each graduate by the archibishop. Miss Braneschi was the class valedictorian and received a year's scholarship to Immaculate Heart college. Both of the Anaheim women are preparing for advanced study this fall in the nursing profession. Commencement speaker was the Right Rev. Monsignor Timothy Manning and music was provided by the Queen of Angels student choir. A reception followed the ceremonies and was held in the Queen of Angels auditorium. Among those present were relatives and close friends of Miss Lieb and Miss Braneschi. Both of the young women are graduates of St. Boniface Parochial school, Anaheim Union High school and Marywood High school. They obtained their pre-nursing courses at Fullerton Junior college and attended the Queen of Angels College of Nursing for three years. For the next few months they will remain on the hospital nursing staff with Miss Lieb continuing with her supervising position on the surgery floor. Both girls are well known among the younger set in Anaheim. Floyd Peterson Goes to Norfolk For New Orders Floyd Peterson, metalsmith first class, USN, left today, Thursday, for Norfolk, Va., following a several weeks' leave spent in this city with his wife and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Grahame, 511 South Clementine street. Hickman Held For Superior Court July 13 When ex-merchant marineman Walter H. Hickman of Santa Ana tangled with Police Officer Thomas V. Taylor at a public dance hall recently he didn't allow for the fact that Friday the 13th was rapidly approaching. The day of reckoning came, however, with the result that Hickman appeared in city court. HAS MAJOR OPERATION Mrs. Alva Furgason, daughter of C. J. Cornwell of Rose Drive, Yorba Linda; is returning to her home this week following a major operation at Fullerton General hospital last week. Her husband is with the U. S. army in Austria. HAS BUSINESS TRIP Harry I. Horn of South Ohio street has returned from a business trip in northern California. IS RECOVERING Lee Fabian is recovering nicely from an emergency appendectomy that was performed last week at the Anaheim sanitarium. Mrs. Flossie Aken left Anaheim June 17 for Crane, Mo., where she is making her future home. HAVE VACATIONS Police Officers Dillard Wilkerson and Thomas V. Taylor have returned to duty following a two weeks vacation. Now on vacation are Police Officers Niles Fiscus and Earl Vipon. They will return to duty July 18. ON VACATION Mrs. Laura Paye, receptionist for Dr. Homer Nelson, is enjoying a vacation of several weeks. Del Mar Racing Season Starts Wed. Rev. M. T. Brandyberry of the Cypress Lutheran church officiated, assisted by Rev. Paul Neerman of the Buena Park Congregational church. Interment followed in Olive Lawn Memorial park where services were in charge of the Maonic lodge. The deceased was prominent in civic and political affairs and was a resident of Cypress for 46 years. For 25 years he was president of the Mutual Dairy association and was a member of the Buena Park Masonic lodge. Surviving him are his widow, Sarah Elizabeth; one daughter, Laura Maude Monroe of Southgate, and one son, Worth Miller, owner of the Buena Park News. County Property Assessment Shows Increase For Superior Court July 13 When ex-merchant marineman Walter H. Hickman of Santa Ana tangled with Police Officer Thomas V. Taylor at a public dance hall recently he didn't allow for the fact that Friday the 13th was rapidly approaching. The day of reckoning came, however, with the result that Hickman appeared in city court last Saturday for a preliminary hearing on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon and was bound over to superior court for trial on Friday, July 13. At the time of the dance hall fracas Hickman charged Policeman Taylor with a beer bottle and after breaking it on his head, jabbed him several times on the forehead with the result that Taylor had to have three stitches taken in two cuts, according to the report the injured officer filed with the police department. Hickman was placed in the city jail, but was later released on $2,000 bail pending the preliminary hearing. Santa Fe Redeems Bonds of Holders The regular monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway company was held in Chicago recently. Following the meeting President Fred G. Gurley announced that the board authorized the redemption on December 1, 1945, of its three outstanding issues of convertible bonds, being the issues of 1905 and 1909 due in 1955, and the issue of 1910 due in 1960. County Property Assessment Shows Increase Orange County Assessor Mauce Enderle presented his 1945-6 fiscal year assessment rolls to the board of supervisors on Monday afternoon and they showed an increase of about $6,-100,000 in taxable worth in the county. The increase came about by evaluation of the county's citrus holdings that have all advanced in market value in recent years. He said that citrus assessments would increase about 30 per cent and improvements to property about 10 per cent. Total valuation of Orange County's properties this fiscal year amount to $211,838,190, greatest in the county's history. During the past three years they have increased more than $13,-100,000.
