CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"Lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed." This admonition of Paul to the Hebrews is the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Christian Science" in all branches, of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston.
A Lesson-Sermon citation from I Samuel records that when Goliath sent his challenge to the armies of Israel, "David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine... And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook... and his sling was in his hand... Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, ... whom thou hast defied... And David ... smote the Philistine in his forehead, ... and he fell upon his face to the earth."
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Matter and Mind are opposites... If one is real, the other must be unreal Only by understanding that there is but one power—not two powers, matter and Mind—are scientific and logical conclusions reached."

White Temple Pastor Accepts Los Angeles Call
Announcement was made this week at the conclusion of the Methodist church conference in Pasadena that Rev. Thomas L. Burden of the White Temple Methodist church has been appointed pastor of the West Adams Methodist church in Los Angeles and will assume his new post immediately.
He will be succeeded by Rev. Hayden Sears who has been pastor of the Methodist church in El Centro for the past four years.
Rev. Burden has served in the Anaheim church for the past five years and has taken an active part in civic enterprises and the Anaheim Ministerial Union. He numbers many friends both in and out of church circles and they are viewing his departure with much regret.
He will preach his first sermon in the West Adams church this Sunday but will not move from the parsonage until Monday. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Griffith will accompany him.
Mr. Sears will conduct the service at the local church this Sunday. He and his wife and three small daughters, aged 2, 4 and 6, will move into the parsonage on East Center street early next week.
Another appointment of interest to local residents was the announcement that Rev. G. Edwin Osher, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Osher of 1124 West Center street, will assume the pastorate at the Garden Grove Methodist church. He comes to the Orange county church from Mt. Olive Methodist church in Hollywood. He is a graduate of the Anaheim Union High school, Fullerton Junior college, Redlands University and the Boston School of Theology in Boston, Mass.
Rev. H. H. Strandberg of the Orange Methodist church is to take a sabbatical year. He will be succeeded by Rev. George Root of the Mission Hills Methodist church in San Diego.

Known as the Werdel-Hatfield highway act, it provides for state and federal funds totaling $449,-265 for post-war local road work in Orange county. A total of $12,-000,000 in state money has been appropriated by the state for the program which will be matched with $13,000,000 of federal money.
With passage of the bill County Highway Engineer A. A. Beard made it known that plans have been prepared for an improvement of approximately 200 miles of county roads and state highways in the county. County roads included are main traffic arteries. The work is to be undertaken within three years of the end of the war.

An application has been filed with the California Railroad commission by the Southern California Edison Company Ltd., for change from 50 to 60 cycles that part of its system which presently is serving electric energy at 50 cycles. The part of the territory includes the city of Anaheim.
Under the proposed program the actual physical change would probably not start until at least during the middle of 1947. It estimated that the first eight months would be required for surveys and other preparation of the physical change. Once that has been started it is estimated that about three and a half years will be required to complete work, or that the entire system will not be changed over un sometime in 1950.
The Edison Company has contemplated this change for past several years according to W. C. Mullendore president of the company. Due to the demands of wartime this program was postponed but now they are going ahead with their postwife plans. The standard frequency of the United States is 60 cycles although 50 cycles is the standard in most of the rest of the world. The estimated over-all expenditure during the five-year recovery period will be approximately $20,000,000, a helpful contribution to southern California's reemployment problem in the postwar period.
The company has announced that it does not contemplate beginning the change on consumer premises before at least another year, or until after the war.
