OUR BOYS WITH THE COLORS
and
THEIR SISTERS IN THE COUNTRY'S SERVICE
(NOTE: If you have a son in any branch of the armed forces, or a daughter in any of the women's army services, The Anaheim Gazette would like to have news notes about them. If they are home on leave, if they write of interesting incidents of army life, or if they should be taken prisoner of war, etc, etc; please call The Gazette, phone 2206, and give an item for this column. Their friends will appreciate it too. Clip this column and enclose it with your letter when you write them.)
Liberated From Prison Camps
Several more Anaheim men have been liberated from German prison camps, it was disclosed this week. They are First Lieut. William R. DeWolf, Pvt. Clifford L. Horton and Pvt. L. Lopez.
Lieut. De Wolf was reported missing in action in March, 1944, but later was declared a prisoner of war. He made his home at 726 South Lemon street. He was co-pilot of a bomber and took his training at Santa Ana Army Air base.
Sgt. George Rees Awarded Purple Heart Decoration
S/Sgt. George L. Rees, son of Mrs. Annie Rees of 119 North Resh street, has been awarded the Purple Heart decoration for injuries sustained in aerial combat against the enemy in the Pacific. Presentation of the award was made by Brigadier General Frederick Smith, commanding general of the Fifth Air Force Fighter Command.
Last April Sgt. Rees returned to the United States and is in Fitzsimmons's hospital in Denver, Colo., where he is recovering from an illness incurred in the Philippine Islands. He had been overseas since January, 1944, and served in New Guinea and the Philippines as a radio technician crew member of a P-61 Black Widow with a night fighter squadron.
Sgt. Rees entered the Army Air Force in December, 1942, and prior to that time had been employed by Douglas Aircraft. A native of Anaheim, he attended schools here and graduated from the Anaheim Union High school in the class of 1938.
While his mother has not seen him she has talked with him on the telephone and says that he is in good spirits and is hopeful of a quick recovery.

Pvt. Lopez, husband of Mrs. Jennie A. Lopez, of 324 South Palm street, was reported missing in action last December but shortly afterwards was declared a prisoner of war. He had been overseas two months and in the Army one year. He attended Anaheim schools.
Truman Hodges, USN, Has Favorite Birthday Cake.
From the far Pacific comes a kindly story of a birthday cake and a $5 bill that travelled from Anaheim to our mighty fleet and back again to the Red Cross.
The story started some weeks ago when Mrs. S. W. Hodges of 406 South Vine street went to the local chapter of the American Red Cross and asked that she be helped in sending $5 to the chaplain of the ship that her son, Truman S. Hodges is serving on. Volunteers helped her compose a letter requesting that the money be used for a birthday cake for her son—a white birthday cake with chocolate frosting.
Some weeks later a letter was received from the chaplain stating that Truman was given a surprise birthday party on May 23, his birthday, and that the birthday cake appeared just as specified. The money was returned with a request from Truman that it be used in Red Cross activities.

Llovd Smith Enlists in Navy
Lloyd Smith, son of Mrs. Elsle Smith of 207 Cherry street, left last Thursday to start his U. S. Navy "boot" training at San Diego. He has just completed his junior year at the Anaheim Union High school and for the past three years has been employed part-time at the Anaheim Gazette.
His older brother, LaMarr recently returned from the Aleutian Islands where he served with the U. S. Navy for many months.
Mother Hears From Son in Jap Prison Camp
Mrs. Rachel Singer of 754 North Lemon street has received a card from her son, Pfc. Floyd L. Singer who has been a prisoner of war in Japan for the past year and a half. Prior to being sent to Japan he was a war prisoner in the Philippine Islands, having been taken prisoner early in 1942.
The card came from Kukuoka prison camp, Honshu Island. He said that he was fine and asked for letters and photographs. Mrs. Singer says that the signature is authentic and not a Jap forgery.
