AAA AND THE FARMER
AAA Out of Farm Transportation July 1
Farm applications for farm trucks and for farm truck or other farm gasoline may not be filed with AAA after June 30, was the announcement made today by Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange County AAA Committee. Farmers must apply directly to ODT and OPA after that date. Funds allotted to AAA for administration of the farm transportation program will be expended at the close of the fiscal year and will not be replenished.
AAA was given the responsibility for servicing farmer applications shortly after gasoline rationing was instituted in 1942. Special farm transportation committees were appointed in all counties to obtain widespread local coverage. Scores of thousands of farm gasoline applications and appeals have been filed with county AAA offices annually. These same California AAA transportation committees processed 9585 new farm truck applications from January, 1943 to April of this year. As farm trucks got older these applications have increased. For example, a total of 917 new farm truck applications were processed by California AAA during March, 1945.
The Orange County Farm Transportation Committee has done an admirable job and has served farmers untiringly without compensation. Chairman of the committee is Al F. Schroeder, also member of the Orange County AAA Committee. Committee members fo 1945 are:
A. F. Schroeder, chairman, West Orange.
R. H. Prothero, El Toro, vice-chairman.
August Eltiste, Anaheim and Santa Ana.
Harvey L. Bear, Santa Ana.
W. H. Finley, Tustin.

1945 War Food Goals Still Fit
After reviewing the entire food situation, War Food Administrator Marvin Jones reports to the nation's farmers that production in line with the 1945 State production goal is even more important than when these goals were established by farmers and agricultural leaders on the basis of war requirements. He emphasized that the need is great for farmers to meet this huge production schedule which will again require the surmounting of many wartime handicaps.
Although reports show farmers will plant close to the high goal levels, planting intentions need to be increased for the oil crops, potatoes, suga beets, dry beans, sweetpotatoes, feed grains and forage crops, and supplementary hay and pasture. Farmers in spring wheat areas are asked to plant some of their intended spring wheat acreage to other needed crops such as flaxseed and barley. Increases are being urged in milk production, cattle slaughter and pig farrowing.
Council Passes Two Resolutions
Two resolutions were passed by the city council Tuesday night at the regular session held in the council chambers. The first resolution accepted a grant deed from the Community Industrial Land company for the purchase of 10 acres of land in the northeast section for public purposes.
The second resolution established several new loading zones on Atchison street and also one on Lemon street just south of Chestnut. Two 20 minute parking zones were also established, one no thought of the tragedy was then taking place.
The Senate adjourned back to my office, and I man started to go to Speak burn's office for a conference was caught on the way message to get to the Whid as quickly as possible. WASHINGTON
As Seen By
CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS
The death of Mr. Roosevelt is still too near, and the shock still to great, for anything like a considered analysis of its effects, here or abroad. To say the death was unexpected would be wrong, as it would be to say it was expected. There have been surmises for a long time that all was not well with the President's health. The Presidency is a killing job, the man who accepts it in these times may well give his life to it, literally. Eight years have been too much for some; Mr. Roosevelt served twelve under unequalled world and domestic conditions.
The death occurred at 4:35 Thursday, April 12, Washington time. At that moment I was on the Senate floor, listening to the argument on the Water Trade Agreement. The Vice President was presiding. He smiles and laughs a great deal. Some Senator from an apple-raising district had evidently sent an apple to his desk, and Mr. Truman laughed and sent it down to Senator Magnuson, whose birthday it was. There was no thought of the tragedy which was then taking place.
The Senate adjourned; I came back to my office, and Mr. Truman started to go to Speaker Rayburn's office for a conference. He was caught on the way with a message to get to the White House as quickly as possible. Mr. Ernest Ganahl of Anaheim was waiting to see me and we talked until nearly six. A few minutes after leaving the office, he hurried back to say that the elevator operator had picked up the report of the being interred at Hyde Park. The services in Washington were in the East Room of the White House, which can hold only about 200 people. Fifteen members of each House represented the Congress. Anthony Eden flew from London. The representatives of other countries, and the cabinet officers were there in addition to members of the immediate family.
Next week I shall try to give you some impressions of the probable changes which will result from this change of Presidents. I have already written them down, as "first reactions." We shall see, as the weeks go by, how accurate they prove to be.
What impressed you the most, among the immediate after-effects of Mr. Roosvelt's death? To me it was the resiliency of this country. At six o'clock Thursday, the entire nation was shocked by the death of the man in whose hands more than any other, the threads of control of the war and the plans for peace, had been placed. You could expect all sorts of reactions. Yet a new President stepped into the vacated place, in stride. There was no thought anywhere that the death would in any way adversely affect the war. The comments on the peace plans were largely about changes which would be necessary. The stock market, a barometer of public sentiment, was unaffected, with only normal changes. The strength of the country was emphasized in every reaction. To me it was as significant as anything in my lifetime.
Several newspaper writers here have called attention to words of Mr. Roosvelt at the beginning of the war: "The state of this nation is good; the heart of this nation is sound; the spirit of this nation is strong; the faith of this nation is eternal."
This could well be Mr. Roosvelt's epitaph. The reactions of his death demonstrated its truth.
With the Nation's farmers moving into action for another "big push" on the food front, War Food Administrator Marvin Jones is urging farmers to plant the full crop acreage called for in the high 1945 farm goals. He points out that regardless of war developments, another record output of fiber is urgently needed from the food and fiber is urgently needed from the Nation's farms and renews his pledge of WFA's full cooperation with the farmers in obtaining the labor needed for cultivating and harvesting all the crops planted.

RETURNS FROM VISIT
Mrs. Henry Kuchel of South Claudina street returned last Saturday from a month's visit in Phoenix, Arizona, with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Humbert. Mrs. Humbert had been visiting in Anaheim for several weeks and Mrs. Kuchel went with her when she returned to her Arizona home.
Discovery in 1944 of two tin-bearing veins in the western part of Seward Peninsula, Alaska, leads to the belief that important reserves of this essential metal may be found in the area.
Specially treated cotton, made flame-resistant and water-repellent, will probably have wide use in the future for insulation purposes because it is light and highly resistant to the passage of heat.

Gardening for Victory
along the Santa Fe
Soon travelers will be seeing plots of beets,
beans, tomatoes, corn and other needed vegetables "coming along"
on both sides of our tracks.
For once again Santa Fe has made its right-of-way available to its employees for Victory Gardens.
We are also offering $2720.00 in War Bonds to our best Victory Gardeners as an added incentive toward helping "Food Fight for Freedom."
Located as we are "Along the Route to Tokyo," Santa Fe people throughout our 13,093 miles of track can "feel" this war. They are working full hours to move along the never-ending loads of guns, tanks, men and munitions.
Perhaps that's another reason why they're not only working harder on their railroad jobs, but are pretty fine War Bond buyers and Victory Gardeners as well.
It's Santa Fe all the way for the U.S.A.!
