A Lecture on
Christian Science
Entitled:
Christian Science:
The Science of Soul, God
by
Dr. John M. Tutt, C.S.B.
of Kansas City, Missouri
Member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Given Sunday afternoon, April 22, 1945, at the Anaheim Union High School auditorium, under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Anaheim.
Sponsored by the local Christian Science church, invitations were extended throughout this territory to other Christian Science congregations, as well as the general public.
Similar lectures are sponsored periodically by each branch of The Mother Church, providing an opportunity by those who are not already students of Christian Science, to obtain a truthful analysis of this religious belief, and to gain some understanding of the teachings of Christian Science.
The lecturer spoke substantially as follows:
It is a true saying that history repeats itself. That is because human nature of itself does not change, with nations or individuals. To-day a world madness makes its pitiless demands upon an Israel which would not know God's way, and which was consequently left to its own. In the message from sense to soul" the Mother hath are mine. Mother-God has no fears for Her child, and I have none. This Science, prophesying and demonstrating as it does, mental, moral, physical and spiritual freedom had to be the emanation of supreme power and intelligence, and be brought to earth by a worthy messenger. Hence the life preparation of Mrs. Eddy, from earliest childhood all the way to the mount of revelation. Her words and works were the outcome of "a contrite heart, a humble thought."
Christian Scientists read, in the Bible, the prophecy of the appearing of God's "two anointed ones" (Zechariah 4). And Christ Jesus himself foretold the coming of the Comforter, the spirit of Truth, which he said, would lead into all truth. From experience Christian Scientists know they have found in Christian Science the promised Comforter. Mrs. Eddy experienced sickness, pain, poverty, injustice. But through all vicissitudes she clung to her faith in God, and the healing power of Christ. And in direst extremity she was healed, and freed from the bonds of material sense; which alone, she found, had enslaved her. Through this nealing by prayer she was divinely led to discover Christian Science, and to found the Christian Science movement. And she was led to establish Christian Science as a healing and saving evangelical system. So that anyone to whom the final revelation of Truth comes also can establish his faith and demonstration on that foundation of Christ healing and saving. Mrs. Eddy's was the true missionary spirit, for she preached the gospel and healed the sick, not only by her own individual efforts, but also through her published writings; through the establishment of The Mother Church with its world wide branches and their ness which cognizes being body does not see, hear, smell taste. Human belief says it does; but destroy this belief seeing with the eye, and we not see materially; and so with each of the physical senses (5:19). Soul then, the only consciousness, is God and saint is the supreme intelligent Mind. That God, the creator self-contained Father-May be real to us as Soul will grasp Soul as the infinite son, or self-conscious Being.
WHAT IS THE SCIENCE OF SOUL?
The Science of Soul knowledge of God in all the meanings and significance of selfconsciousness whence is and opposite to matter and material senses. And it is the application of such knowledge humanity. Thus the Scient Soul establishes Soul source of spiritual or real and exposes and disproves opposite material senses, or is commonly called the sou Christian Science we search God through the Soul sense find all in Soul, God; but not thereby lose the individu of either God or man, our selves. As your real selfh sees the falsely personal vanity The spiritually personal or vidual man you are needs no ogles. It blesses the world glorifies God. Your indispensability to God, is as real as indispensability to you. The knowledge is the spiritual or sense of being. The faculty Soul are spiritual sight hearing, touch, smell, plus aer Soul senses. Spiritual understanding is the manion of Soul; and it is God's for salvation in the human ousness. It destroys the sense of confusion opposed to itity of discord versus harm
It is a true saying that history repeats itself. That is because human nature of itself does not change, with nations or individuals. To-day a world madness makes its pitiless demands upon an Israel which would not know God's way, and which was consequently left to its own. In the "passage from sense to Soul" (Science and Health, p. 566), Israel always has blown hot and cold. What Christian is there that cannot remember the smoke and flame of spiritual guidance, in the glorious days of farewell to the land of bondage, material, sensual thinking and living? Those days of eager walking into the sun with all shadows falling behind. And who is there of us that has not, alas not infrequently, found himself, through forsaking God's ways, banished from the spiritual sense, seated by the rivers of Babylon and weeping, "when we remembered Zion"? How indeed, "shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land"? Judah came back from Babylon, that epitome of materiality, confusion, sinful sense, and raised again "the choral hymn of praise"; even as you and I have so often retraced our wayward steps, back into the heavenly passage.
Babylon to-day throws its tentacles around men and nations. But here and there stand pillars of strength resisting successfully all choking and deteriorating forces. Such individuals are not, for example, fair weather Christian Scientists. These do not tire and quit. These are the uncompromisingly reliant on Truth. These are the spiritually radical. These are not ashamed of Jesus. These obey their Leader and follow their Exemplar. These are the remnant. And there is always a remnant. These are the Soul Inspired. Isaiah wrote for these days also when he foretold (Isaiah 37) "And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root, downward, and bear fruit upward; For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of Mount Zion:"
MORE THAN A PROPHET
Always the recurring tragedies of history have been marked by prophetic voices; seers calling upon the people to repent their materialistic back-slidings; and assuring to the spiritually minded the four freedoms of Soul.
Christian Science is pure monotheism. Many religions have claimed to teach one God, but one and all, religions other than Christian Science have admitted besides good an opposite called evil; and besides Spirit another substance called matter. Mrs. Eddy proclaimed one God, synonymous with good, and His wholly good creation, spiritual man and the universe. To indicate the one absolute good and also as she put it, "to express the nature, essence, and wholeness of Deity" (Science and Health, p. 465), she was directed by unerring intelligence to designate seven particular terms for God. These synonyms are Mind, Soul, Spirit, Principle, Life, Truth and Love. Mrs. Eddy found them in, or implied in, the Bible. Capitalized by Mrs. Eddy, they serve to present not many gods, but one God in many shades of meaning. Study of these synonyms broadens and deepens one's understanding of God, and so of God's image and likeness, man one's own true selfhood. And study of the synonyms of God is peculiar to Christian Science. For our consideration at this time let evangelical system. So that anyone to whom the final revelation of Truth comes also can establish his faith and demonstration on that foundation of Christ healing and saving. Mrs. Eddy's was the true missionary spirit, for she preached the gospel and healed the sick, not only by her own individual efforts, but also through her published writings; through the establishment of The Mother Church with its world wide branches and their activities; through The Christian Science Publishing Society, with its weekly, monthly and quarterly periodicals and the great daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor; and through The Christian Science Board of Lectureship. All of which institutions she founded to advance the religion of Christian Science, and so to bring salvation to humanity. From grateful hearts Christian Scientists acknowledge her prophetic calling and her Soul-inspired Leadership. Recognising in their Leader more than a prophet, they follow her even as she followed Christ. And they believe and are sure, that she who has led them through the Red Sea of materialism will also guide them in the wilderness, over Jordan, and into the promised land of Soul.

MORE THAN A PROPHET
Always the recurring tragedies of history have been marked by prophetic voices, seers calling upon the people to repent their materialistic back-slidings; and assuring to the spiritually minded the four freedoms of Soul—mental, physical, moral, spiritual. Climaxing the progressive appearance of such Godlike characters as Noah, Moses, the Prophets, John the Baptist, names undying in the annals of mankind, came the final revelator of Truth, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. Contemporary with the insurgence of liberty in the freeing of the African slaves in the United States of America, Mrs. Eddy, as she herself put it in her book, the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "sounded the keynote of universal freedom." And in the revelation of Divine Science, which this God inspired scribe envisioned and reduced to the needs of humanity, in what she called Christian Science, full liberation is assured to all from every enslavement. For example, Mrs. Eddy revealed, and amazingly exemplified, the Motherhood of God; and in so doing she lifted the curse on womankind. And for every mother's daughter and son, whose heart is contrite and whose thought is humble, she opened the way to independence. Such an emancipated child can now say with Christ Jesus: All things that the Father hath are mine; and with Mrs. Eddy: "All things that
SOUL DEFINED
In her book, Rudimental Divine Science, Mrs. Eddy has defined Soul as "the only real conscious-
WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES OF SOUL?
We must come to comprise love and to live God as For through Soul we conceive health, harmony, normality all the finer things of life made secure to us.
There is the Soul qualityance. The Textbook says (p. "Immortality, exempt from decay, has a glory of its radiance of Soul." Now example, Soul radiates the liness of Love, the truthfulness Truth, and Soul's own harm Even as the sun throws it light, colour, and heat, and out diminution, so Soul rails the qualities of God, to con one grand divine radiation of pression of being.
CONSIDER NOW HARMONIZE
Science and Health (p. 58) fines heaven as "the atmosphere of Soul." This atmosphere everywhere present, and is harmony of being in all resilient also it is the annihilator of ery form of discord, infant For example, it is the destroy worry, concern, fretting. If were better understood would be less worry, grief heartache, and more salvation the world of humanity. Worry unhealthful. Worry is an unhealthy condition of thought. The ble describes the worrier evildoer, and declares that evildoer will be cut off heaven, the harmonies of God. pass which cognizes being. The body does not see, hear, smell, or taste. Human belief says that it passes; but destroy this belief of passing with the eye, and we could not see materially; and so it is with each of the physical senses" (19). Soul then, the only real consciousness, is God and so Soul the supreme intelligence or mind. That God, the creator or self-contained Father-Mother, may be real to us as Soul we must aspire Soul as the infinite Perception, or self-conscious Being.
WHAT IS THE SCIENCE OF SOUL?
The Science of Soul is the knowledge of God in all the varied meanings and significance of that consciousness which is above and opposite to matter and the material senses. And it is the application of such knowledge to humanity. Thus the Science of Soul establishes Soul as the source of spiritual or real sense, and exposes and disproves the opposite material senses, or what commonly called the soul. In Christian Science we search for and through the Soul senses, and add all in Soul, God; but we do not thereby lose the individuality either God or man, our true lives. As your real selfhood is on the falsely personal vanishes, you spiritually personal or individual man you are needs no apologies. It blesses the world and terrifies God. Your indispensability to God, is as real as God's indispensability to you. This self-knowledge is the spiritual or Soul-sense of being. The faculties of soul are spiritual sight, taste, hearing, touch, smell, plus all other Soul senses. Spiritual sense or understanding is the manifestation of Soul; and it is God's agent of salvation in the human consciousness. It destroys the false case of confusion opposed to clarification versus harmony of do evil." Instead the worrier insists on fretting in almost every wise. He likes to worry, and will stoutly defend his right to fret. Men and women like to brag about their ills. They are proud of what they should be ashamed of and they shut themselves out of heaven, the harmony of Soul, God, with a zeal and stubbornness that well earns them instead the atmosphere of discord, hell. Science and Health declares that personal sense clings to its pleasure and keeps Soul well out of sight. This is equally true of the pains and harmonies of sense. The human consciousness dislikes being too spiritual, too good. It is alarmed at the demands of Soul to go all out for Christ, the idea of Soul. Worry is the favourite reactionary tendency in the human mind. Who of us can say he never worries? And who can say he ever found harmony, heaven, through worrying? Spiritual or Soul sense is the opposite of worry and its antidote. This reactionary tendency, worry, is reflected also in bodily relapses from normality. Humanity fears to take no thought for the body and so clings to its woes and diseases. Thus worry becomes the antipode of health. In Rudimental Divine Science (p. 11) Mrs. Eddy declares: "Health is the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease; or, rather, the absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else." And so health is found to be a quality of Soul, an emanation, an outpouring of Soul. Healing is never more than finding out that all is well with man. What we need is the heavenly harmony, which comes when the dawn of the spiritual idea appears in the human consciousness. This is uneased "blest Christmas morn;" for whatever is born in the human consciousness must affect the human body. affections, and our Leader tells us in Science and Health that "the affections must be translated from sense to Soul."
Science and Health declares (p. 488:27) "If it were possible for the real senses of man to be injured, Soul could reproduce them in all their perfection;" Soul has the power to renew. To present God in infinite variety, to reproduce the annual miracle of returning greenery "the livelier iris" on the breast of the dove, all this is "the springtide of Soul." This power is "the restorer of paths to dwell in" for He alone "restoreth my soul," spiritual sense. Christian Science teaches transformation of the body through renewal of the mind. Do we think the same thoughts of body day by day? Then the body will be rutted in non-progressive thought, and no improvement can come to it. But do we strive for and demand renewal of thought of body daily? Progress is change for the better: and body will second all motions of Mind. Actually better thinking is always of real Mind, and to renew the mind is to replace material thought with spiritual thought; only so does thought come above matter and beyond it.
THE PRAYER OF SOUL
And now see how this higher Soul-sense was invoked in behalf of a child, the son of the woman of Shunam, as related in 11 Kings chapter 4. The story describes this Shunammite as "a great woman." And great indeed she was in spiritual perception, for she quickly discerned Elisha to be "a holy man of God." And to him she turned when her son sickened and died, in fullest confidence that the child would be restored. Here was the prayer of Soul. And here was the highest prayer of Christian Science. It rejected the material sense testimony and sought and found applied with this just day Soul why do you wish diseases, classify them, to find a physical cause symptom?

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES OF SOUL?
We must come to comprehend love and to live God as Soul through Soul we come to health, harmony, normality, and the finer things of life are secure to us.
There is the Soul quality radiate. The Textbook says (p. 247) immortality, exempt from age or day, has a glory of its own—radiance of Soul." Now, for example, Soul radiates the lovelessness of Love, the truthfulness of Truth, and Soul's own harmonies as the sun throws it rays as heat, colour, and heat, and with diminution, so Soul radiates qualities of God, to comprise a grand divine radiation or emission of being.
CONSIDER NOW HARMONY
Science and Health (p. 587) deserves heaven as "the atmosphere Soul." This atmosphere is everywhere present, and is the mony of being in all respects; so it is the annihilator of evoform of discord, inharmony. For example, it is the destroyer of worry, concern, fretting. If Soul be better understood there could be less worry, grief, andurtache, and more salvation in world of humanity. Worry is healthful. Worry is an unheal-condition of thought. The Biodescribes the worrier as an doer, and declares that the doer will be cut off from even the harmonies of Soul.
Yet it is amazing how widely even some Christian Scientists will ignore the scriptural yet not thyself in any wise to real faculties, or Soul sense, to replace erring material sense. These faculties are never impaired nor lost for an instant. Science and Health tells us (p. 210) "Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation." Spiritual or Soul-sense is the agent, ever present in the human consciousness, for the preservation of health, holiness, wealth. It is the power of God unto salvation. Spiritual or soul sense is the great preventive, that is protective, as well as the curative significance of Christ. All evil centers in and stems from the material senses. Soul and its faculties are the cure. Healing and saving occur when Soul-sense puts to silence the material order and brings forth the right idea. This is the forever coming of Christ.
And now consider bliss as a quality of Soul, and therefore of man. Bliss and its kindred ideas, joy, happiness, gladness, pure affection, all illustrations of the unity of eternal Love. Science and Health defines bride as "a sense of Soul, which has spiritual bliss and enjoys, but cannot suffer." All these heavenly qualities are born of Soul, their infinite source, and they happify and make glad human relations. Mrs. Eddy puts it in Misc. Wtg. (p. 287:12) "only high and holy joy can satisfy immortal cravings." And that personal sense "discerning not the legitimate affection of Soul, may place love on a false basis and thereby lose it." Soul, God, is the source of all the real good in the mind.
Do not members need to face that renunciation in order to pray the prayer of the Soul? The conduct of the Shunammite and of Elisha throughout their work on this case, showed the positiveness of Soul-sense as contrasted with the negativeness of the lower material senses. So praying, whatever the problem we may face, whether it be an argument of sinful desire or its tragic effects, a condition of physical disease, a sense of financial limitation or loss, a worry, a want, a woe, a war, we can rise to the Shunamitic: "It is well with the child." Complying with the demands of the Science of Soul, we shall find all things intact and permanent—life, health, wealth, harmony, bliss, peace, substance, self-control. We shall find the faculties, senses, of Soul never cease their funtioning in perfect harmony.
THE DEMANDS OF THE SCIENCE OF SOUL
Science and Health declares of Soul: The first demand of this Science is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. This me is Spirit." Therefore to worship God aright, one has only to be conscious of his real being as spiritual, not material; or just to be what he really is. This means that not professions, but deeds indicate what we know of the Science of Soul.
We must face the demands of Soul and not seek to evade the issue. For example Science and Health (p. 157) says "Christian Science exterminates the drug, and rests on Mind alone as the curative Principle, acknowledging that the divine Mind has all power." Exterminates, mind you.Have you exterminated material medicine in all its forms? Has Mind, Spirit,Soul, all power to you,or have you merely put material medicine away, carefully? If you have comLove is expressed in has the Christ quality of Love is expressed in giving marily in getting. We do not get,we have to give. We have to be understood, they don't have served,我们有to serve;have to be loved,我们有Love is expressed in having everything in us would lie in others.Love is express in giving freedom to our would reserve for ourselves evils of regimentation, and ent in a failure to measure golden rule, rather than in fort to practice it.Had Our guiltless of breaking this demand,他 could right asked "Am I my brother?" To love one's neighbor one's self is to maintain fit individuality One has cesssity to be one's self.body has the right to do that function.Jesus,\nonly loved his neighbour and early asked "Who made me or a divider over you?" practice of the second devil relieve distress,to heal when requested,to save them when repentant,to serve
plied with this just demand of Soul why do you wish to name diseases, classify them, and seek to find a physical cause for every symptom?
Belief in the gods of medicine produces false fears, to which our Leader refers in her poem:
"False fears are foes,
Truth tatters those,
When understood."
Material theories, material diagnoses, material remedies — Truth tatters those and all other false gods, when understood. To understand, to have faith in the Science of Soul, foresees and foretells the triumph of Truth over error. To persist in trusting the all power of good, knowing there are no evil consequences of doing and being good, is to have no other gods before me, Spirit, Soul. The will of God and the will to do right are consonant; and they illustrate the coincidence of the human with the divine. To persist in prayer is to obey the first commandment, is in fact to be man. Man is a persistent being. He has the will to be good and to do good, the will to be well and wealthy. The opposite will power is the source of all animal magnetism and mental malpractice, sin and disease and death. To persist in good is to overcome evil. This is will power at its best, raised above the lower sense of human wilfulness. Our determination should be always to keep Soul well in sight. And this is the only way to have one God alone.
The worship of body sets up a pantheon, false gods which inevitably visit iniquity upon their hapless worshippers. There are false fears that the functioning of Soul and its idea, man, can be interfered with or stopped: (1) By the entrance of extraneous objects or forces, such as germs, poisons, etcetera. (2) By physical shock, wounds, or mental shock. All these foes are designed to destroy cells, as opportunity affords, to seek one's own in another's good. But it is anti-Christ to encourage and increase indigency, to provide convenient escape from the consequences of sin and dissipation, to attempt to eliminate the need for thrift, economy and wisdom.
One's growth in grace and the knowledge of good, and one's consequent growth in usefulness to mankind, far transcends any consideration of a particular job. It is most important to be bigger than whatever job one occupies. To be progressive one must be constantly outgrowing his job. This does not mean one should feel superior to his position in any arrogant sense; and of course one should never feel superior to his fellow men. But a job is a means to an end, the end of fulfilment of the second demand of the Science of Soul. A job is an opportunity, and never in itself an end either of striving or accomplishment. To be bigger than one's job is to be ever capable of greater service. Business is a right activity, a holy thing. Both business and religion, to be right, must be founded on Principle and dependent on Principle. Business rightly considered fulfils the second demand of the Science of Soul. The Constitution of the United States guarantees the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Happiness is a Soul quality, a religious quality, an attribute of God, and hence of man. No law can, under the Constitution, abridge or take away the inalienable right of the individual to get rich and to be rich. To be well and wealthy and useful in all respects, in body, in mind, in purse, is a right pursuit of happiness, and a capture of it. The second demand of the Science of Soul is in attending to business, and in having a business to attend to.
through strength. The day of permanent peace can dawn upon the nations only as the love of peace is born to the human consciousness and grows in favour with mankind. This babe of Soul, which every Christian Scientist should cherish comes to and dwells with those only that love good supremely and walk steadfastly in the steps of the great Way-shower, Jesus the Christ. A pastor once said to a convert, who had come out of a great tribulation and waywardness: "Brother, you never fail to come into the house. Of God when the doors are opened, and your enthusiasm and devotion to the church inspires and comforts me." The reply should be broadcast to every Christian of wayward foot and chilled heart. "Well," he said to his pastor, "some of us have come to know where our joy is." Peace and joy will come to individuals and nations just as the Christ, the idea of Soul, becomes more and more exclusive in human consciousness. In the transition from sense to Soul, there is no substitute for "a contrite heart, a humble thought!"

Soul well in sight.
All these foes are designed to destroy cells, the supposed unit of material life. Disease is an adolatrous attack on body. The germ theory of disease is based on the hypothesis of extraneous cells, capable of reproduction, growth, decay, and the formation of poisons, when introduced into the body. These toxins are believed to be capable of disrupting and even stopping the functions of the body. But there are no extraneous cells created by God. Man is the expression of self-contained Being. Because he is the compound of all ideas there is nothing outside of man. Nothing can be added to him, nothing can affect the harmony and continuity and perpetuity of his perfect functioning. There is therefore no disease germ, no illegitimate cell growth with its perverted life cycle, either outside man, or possible of introduction into man. Also there is no illegitimate functioning of man's moral and spiritual elements. Soul, God, has no inharmonious action, hence there is no sin, erroneous sense, in Soul, or in Soul's man. The false sense of Soul and body is both sin and sinner. And that falsity alone is punished and destroyed from the human consciousness. Matter and the material sinful senses are no more man than a tumor or disease is body. The claim that evil, as sin or disease or other abnormality, can exist outside of man, or be introduced into man, or be in man, is a Soulless sense; hence it is not a fact.
The second demand of the Science of Soul, Science and Health (p. 15) delares: "Thou shalt love my neighbor as thyself." This demand cannot be met with the material senses, for they all too often present a picture of unloveliness, ugliness, unworthiness. Their testimony, at its best, is changeable and unreliable. Only through the senses of Soul can we find and love man, the expression of self-conscious being, "the express image (character) of His (God's) person." Only the truth of man can cure the errors in self and others. Healing is never found in condemnation of others, but al-
quality, a religious quality, an attribute of God, and hence of man.
It is often said by the headstrong, and not always by youth, "I like to find out by personal experience." And indeed such is the only alternative to "a contrite heart, a humble thought." But back in the 16th century, a wise man said: "It is costly wisdom that is bought by experience. Learning teacheth more in one year than experience in twenty." Man is the expression of self-conscious Being. Each of us can know, not preferably through bitter experiences, but rather by that self-consciousness. Science and Health declares (p. 467): "It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love." Each of us can know and live the facts of real being, through the senses of Soul. The meekness of "I can of mine own self nothing" will be found to be the might of "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheth me." The second demand of the Science of Soul, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self, signifies the harmony of Soul and the unity of being, wherein to all men the One Mind is common and love is mutual.
CONCLUSION
The world presents to-day a gravely dislocated sense of morals, law, order and harmony. Yet Christian Science has come and the harvest has been and will continue to be plenteous.
That error seems much more to abound where harmony alone should be seen, deeply concerns every disciple of Christ Jesus, and every follower of our Leader. When the original Mother Church building was erected in the Back Bay in Boston, there also grew up around it all sorts of riff-raff. All about the sacred edifice there sprang up questionable rooming houses. Across the narrow street was a cheap saloon and a mean drug store. Quack doctors, mental scientists, numerologists, palmists, astrologers, fortune tellers, and spiritualists crowded the immediate vicinity. But these were notENCE Mind-healing, in one volume of 700 pages.

New Proposals To Raise Postwar Property Tax Rate
Orange county's postwar property tax rate could go up 28 cents per $100 of value, based on this year's valuation, if the legislature does not shelve the five kinds of proposals before it to further liberalize California's aid to the aged, California Taxpayers association said today, analyzing the effect on local taxes of typical plans now before the legislature.
The annual cost of old age assistance to the local county property taxpayers could go up from approximately $177,000 of county cost for this fiscal year to about $767,000 in postwar years, the association said.State and federal costs in the county could also go up from the present $1,612,000 a year to about $5,072,000 a year.
The five kinds of costly proposals, the Taxpayers association said unless defeated by the legislature would:
1. Take out of the law the already lenient provision that relatives who are financially able must contribute to the support of their needy parents.
2. Lower the age of eligibility from the present 65 years, tom 60 yearswith a ten-year residence requirement for needy persons in the 60 to 65 age group.
3. Increase the present "highest in the nation" aid of $50 per month to $80.
4. Further liberalize the law with respect to allowable earnings and income.
5. Provide for $100 county contribution to burial costs.
If all these proposals were passed by the legislature,California's present aid to the needy aged, which totals $91,000,000 this
