Lions Club Pays Tribute to F. D. R.
A note of solemnity overlay the usual tone of joviality at the Lions club meeting last Friday noon and members bowed their heads in grief when H. G. Schmeltzer offered a prayer as a memorial to Franklin Roosevelt.
William Jones, president of Whittier college and guest speaker, spoke briefly on the serious loss to the country and the entire world incurred through the death of Roosevelt and then discussed the meaning of American democracy. He was introduced by Charles Rinehart, program chairman.
President Chapman presided over the meeting and announced that the semi-annual meeting of the Orange County Council of the Lions club would be held tonight, Thursday, at Santa Ana. He also reminded members of the annual ladies' night party that will be held at Padua Hills next Thursday night.
Tom Tucker appealed to members to provide assistance in operating the local ration board.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel for Henry Baker, 69, who passed away early Tuesday morning. The Allied Clothing Drive Gathers Momentum
The United Allied Drive for war relief clothing picked up momentum this week as housewives dug deep into closets and stored trunks for practical, serviceable clothing that will some day be worn by destitute refugees in Greece, Holland, Italy, Belgium, and other war torn countries.
According to E. W. Moeller, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and committee members, there are sizeable donations at the various depots that include all churches, elementary schools, the Anaheim Union High school, Fabian's store, city garage, post-office lobby and chamber of commerce.
When the drive is concluded on April 30, the clothing will be picked up by trucks and taken to Los Angeles where expert sorters will go over it. The railroads are providing transportation for the clothing that will be taken to big assembly points before being shipped overseas.
The combined clothing drive is under the national chairmanship of Henry Kaiser, famed contractor and shipbuilder and the national quota is 150,000,000 pounds of clothing.
Last week the high school students concentrated their efforts into a single week and the result was that 4,500 pounds of clothing has already been deposited in local depots with more still arriving.
Elementary school children were given notes this week to take home listing the kind of clothing needed. Each person in the community is being asked to donate five pounds of clothing apiece in order that the local quota can be met.
Boy Scouts Now Eligible for $700 Scholarship
Announcement was made this week that Orange county Boy Scouts are eligible for the Robert Dofflemyer scholarship to Stanford university. Preference will be given to qualified applicants who hold the Eagle Scout rank and application forms may be secured through the scholarship secretary at the university. Full credentials of applicants must be on file at the university by May 1.
For the 1945-46 school year two awards of $700 each will be available and the winners of the scholarships, who make good records at the university, may re-apply for the scholarship at the conclusion of their first year.
The scholarship was created by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. W. Todd Dofflemyer of Exeter in honor of their son, Robert, a Stanford graduate, class of 1941. He is now with the field artillery in Belgium.

Plans to extend and improve farm telephone service
Rural telephone service is more highly developed in this country than anywhere else in the world. There are 500,000 more farm telephones today than in 1935. More than 350,000 have been installed since 1940.
Our first job is to win the war, but the telephone companies are preparing a wide-range program to further extend and improve service to farm families.
Important new devices and methods were worked out, and others were being developed, before war demands called a halt to the program. Just as soon as conditions permit, the necessary manpower and equipment will again be put to work on the job. The goal is to bring the telephone to the greatest possible number of farm families.
