Anaheim Elks to Aid Liberated Elk Internees Headed by Thomas J. Wolff, Past Grand Officer of Manila Lodge of Elks, a special committee has been set up in the Philippines capital to bring relief and assistance to recently liberated Elk internees, according to word received today by Stephen F. Gallagher, Exalted Ruler of Anaheim, Lodge No. 1345, from James R. Nicholson, Chairman of the Elks War Commission, New York City. An appropriation of $100,000, made available from the fraternal order's war chest, has been set aside for the purpose. The money will be used to purchase medicine, food and clothing, and provide loans for members of Manila Lodge and other Elks who were held prisoners by the Japs until their liberation by American forces recently. Lt. R. Grimm Distinguishes Himself in Action HEADQUARTERS 66TH INFANTRY DIVISION—The Battalion CO pointed out to 1st Lt. Raymond W. Grimm of Anaheim, Calif., the enemy's strong points which were harassing an Allied unit in the Lorient pocket in France. The next morning Lt. Grimm brought two gun sections across the river—the first American artillery to fire from across the river—and his howitzers chalked up the following box scores in a two-and-one-half hour barrage: knocked out three machine gun installations. Volume of Work Heavy Reports Telephone Head President N. R. Powley of The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company and of the Southern California Telephone Company in his message to shareholders accompanying dividend checks for the first quarter of the year, reported that, "Inclusive of new installations, discontinuances and moves, our company handled last year a movement of 991,559 telephones—a number equal to more than a third of our total telephones in service. This movement was composed of 360,443 connections, 340,590 discontinuances, and 145,263 moves due to changes of address by our customers. To gain one telephone, it was necessary to connect and disconnect, and incur the costs therefor, a total of 50 telephones. Telephones connected were 23 per cent greater and discontinuances were 16 per cent less for the first two months of 1945 than for the corresponding period of last year. Due to the pressing war demands upon manufacturing facilities, the unfilled civilian orders for telephone service continue to increase. All telephones, however, essential to the war effort are being installed. "The cooperative understanding being shown by the many people who are on the waiting list is most sincerely appreciated, as is the splendid response of the pub-lic to our long distance service requests to 'save from 7 to 10 p.m. for the service men,' and to limit calls to five minutes where circuits to war-busy centers are crowded. We earnestly seek, at all times, to merit the confidence of the public. Our fine personnel does itself traditional credit through its courteous and efficient service. In whatever department or capacity our employees serve, they all are representatives of our company and their conduct, individually and collectively, determines its character and reputation. "The preliminary Earnings Report for the first quarter of the year indicates earnings per common share of $1.75 as compared with $1.84 per common share for the last quarter of 1944 and $1.55 per share for the first quarter of last year. Labor costs and taxes continue to increase markedly. Further wage increases involving substantial expenditures have been recently under negotiation with the unions. Our commitment to employees absent on leave in the armed forces and the merchant marine will require large wage expenditures when we gladly welcome them home to our family circle." B&PW CLUB TO MEET The Business and Professional Women's club will meet next Wednesday night at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Dr. Hazel Nelms at the corner of Broadway and Lemon streets; As election of officers will take place all members are urged to attend. Job Printing. Gazette. Ph. 2206 FANTRY DIVISION—The Battalion CO pointed out to 1st Lt. Raymond W. Grimm of Anaheim, Calif., the enemy strong points which were harassing an Allied unit in the Lorient pocket in France. The next morning Lt. Grimm brought two gun sections across the river—the first American artillery to fire from across the river—and his howitzers chalked up the following box scores in a two-and-one-half hour barrage: knocked out three machine gun installations; netted 12 direct hits on a fort causing it to burn; pulverized about a dozen Jerries running out of the fort; scored four direct hits on a supply barracks and completely demolished one driver, team of horses and wagon that was picking up rations; and retted two hits on an 88 gun position. All this was accomplished virtually under Jerry's nose as the enemy front lines were from 300 to 500 yards away once the river was spanned. With his two guns and 300 rounds of ammunition, Lt. Grimm effected a crossing of the river and moved to a point less than two miles from the enemy lines and overlooking the Atlantic and enemy-held Belle Island. The two guns were located in an apple orchard and the men proceeded to dig in for about an hour. However, enemy artillery fire forced them to withdraw about a mile where they proceeded to set up their guns in another orchard. Here Lt. Grimm's men established radio communication with their forward observer and commenced their two-and-one-half hour barrage which proved so disastrous to the enemy. Lt. Grimm is fighting with the 66th (Black Panther) Division, one of the Allied units which has 60,000 Germans along the Atlantic wall in the St. Nazaire and Lorient areas in France. He is the husband of Mrs. Helen Grimm of Rt. 3, Box 241, Anaheim, Calif. ENTERTAINS PATIENTS Dr. C. O.
