Though China is the cradle of the world's citrus industry and even in wartime produces more than 21 million boxes annually, it is unlikely that it will be a citrus exporting nation within the next half century.
That is the opinion of Dr. W. T. Chang, expressed at the weekly California Fruit Growers Exchange directors meeting is Los Angeles. A graduate of Cornell University, he is professor of agricultural chemistry at the University of Nanking and in charge of horticultural demonstration stations throughout China.
There are 176,000 agricultural cooperative organizations in China, most of them organized since the outbreak of the war but only 600 are horticultural groups. Dr. Chang spoke highly of California's advancement in cooperative marketing and expressed the belief that this type of marketing would have an important place in postwar agricultural China.
In Dr. Chang's opinion a century may be required to produce enough citrus to supply the needs of China's population. During that time he believes China will be a good market for California fruit, as China has never had a protective tariff and the purchasing power of its population can be expected to increase rapidly when the war is ended.
In comparing China's citrus industry with that of California, he pointed out that as early as 521 A. D. there were 21 varieties of oranges in the Szechwan district, and that the Chinese still produce a large number of varieties of citrus, differing considerably in appearance, flavor and ripening season.
President Sends Salute to 4-H'ers From Far Off Yalta
President Roosevelt's annual salute to the farm youth of the nation in observance of National 4-H Club week came all the way from the "Big Three" conference of the Allies at Yalta, it was revealed today by H. W. Longfellow of the Agricultural Extension Service. The original letter, bearing the Presidential signature, was dispatched from the world-shaping conference in a diplomatic pouch and flown to the United States. A copy was received at Santa Ana today by Assistant County Farm Advisor H. W. Longfellow.
The President of the United States commends the nearly two million 4-H members for their continued wartime program and their contribution to the home food production program.
Local 4-H club members are meeting this week with renewed pledges to help feed a fighter as well as producing and preserving food for the family use, it was stated by Longfellow.

Farmers to Get Stored Australian Processed Wheat
Australian wheat, which has been held in storage under quarantine for noxious weed seeds contained in it, will be processed and released to feeders of all classes of livestock, C. L. Ranney, chairman of the Orange County Feed Committee, announced today.
The wheat will first be cleaned, Ranney stated, and the cleaned wheat will then be dry-rolled: The cleanings from the wheat will be ground, Ranney added, so that danger from the noxious weed seeds will be eliminated. The processed wheat will be released through the Commodity Credit Corporation, according to advice received by Ranney, at a special price of $50 per ton delivered to the purchaser's railroad station in Orange county in carload lots.
Ranney stated that no further release of wheat will be made until this Australian wheat is consumed. Feeder orders should be placed through the AAA-War Board office, 622 N. Main street, Santa Ana, according to Ranney, who also explained that dealers should, as usual, place their orders directly with the Commodity Credit Corporation.

Yes, home owners throughout California these days tell their friends, "We refinanced our home loan at Bank of America. Now, instead of an old first and second mortgage, we have a single FHA insured loan where we meet with smaller monthly payments."
That's the whole story of home loan refinancing in few words, and if that story interests you, the manager or lending officer of your nearest branch of Bank of America will gladly answer any questions.

LEND-LEASE RUMORS REPLACED BY FACTS
The Foreign Economic Administration nipped some false rumors in the bid with a few facts about Lend-Lease of agricultural commodities. The rumors have circulated criticism about shipment of butter to Canada, while our own supplies were short. As a matter of fact, Canada does not receive any Lend-Lease shipments. All our butter shipped under Lend-Lease has gone to the Russian army—about four percent of our total supply. Another item under discussion has been beefsteak, supposedly shipped abroad in large quantities. According to FEA, less than one percent of our beef and veal was exported under Lend-Lease last year. Of the total food production in the United States in 1944, eight percent went for Lend-Lease exports, and one percent for commercial exports.
SPOT FARM NEWS
Addition of ice cream to Army menus at battlefronts will probably increase military packaging requirements for 1945 by 400 million cartons. Decrease in numbers of livestock plus record production of feed grains in 1944 has bettered the feed situation. As of January 1 supplies of feed grain per animal unit was 27 percent more than a year earlier. It may be easier to get turkey for your 1945 Thanksgiving dinner than it was last year, unless military demand increases. Turkey production is about eight percent higher than in 1944. DDT, the war-developed insect killer, is now released in limited amounts for agricultural and other civilian experimentation according to WPB.
military uses... Western Regional USDA laboratory has developed a unique spread among jam and jelly products in the course of studies on the uses for frozen fruit purees. This is uncooked, cold processed, chilled and frozen fruit which holds natural color, flavor and nutritive value and uses little sugar.
Government estimates forecast California's valencia orange crop at 17 per cent greater than the previous record crop in 1941 but sizes will be small, averaging 310 per box compared to an average of 239 for the past five years.
4-H Clubs Plan County Fair May 12
The Orange County 4-H Club Council met Monday night to plan for a County 4-H fair to be held May 12th, it was announced today by the Agricultural Extension Service. Sixty 4-H leaders and guests were in attendance. The theme of the fair will be home food production and economics. The chairman of the meeting was Mrs. J. J. Beavers. Four-H club reports were given by the leaders.

1945 Kite Season Brings Usual Warning to Boys
With the open season on kites already under way, the Southern California Edison Company issued a list of safety rules, designed to prevent interruptions in vital electric power service.
"Edison lines are delivering the power to operate many war plants, as well as the electricity necessary in our every-day lives," R. E. Bacon, district manager for the Edison Company said. "By following four rules during the kite season, boys and girls can help avoid the costly trouble that comes when flying kites tangle with power lines. And in addition, they will be insuring their own personal safety."
1. Fly a kite in an open field, away from power lines.
2. Use cotton cord. Never use wire, tinsel or metallic cord.
3. Be sure the cord is perfectly dry.
4. If your kite catches in a power line, let go! Do not pull it. Telephone the company owning the line and a lineman will come to get the kite down safely and with the least possible injury to it.
