Fullerton 'Hellcat' Fighter Pilot Downs Jap Plane In Fight for Luzon
Aboard Vice Admiral McCain's Carrier Task Force Flagship, off Luzon, (Delayed) ... Lieutenant James S. Neander, U.S.N.R., 28-year-old fighter pilot from Fullerton, California, shot down over Luzon today the first Jap plane he has had a crack at in nearly three months of combat duty—and he made certain of the kill by flying his plane alongside the riddled Jap craft and looking into the cockpit.
"I used to be a gunnery instructor," remarked the West Coast aviator, whose wife, Mrs. Betty J. Neander, lives at 212 North Spadra Street, Fullerton. "It's been kind of embarrassing up to now not having any planes to my credit."
Lieutenant Neander, former student at the University of Washington and the Central Washington College of Education, was with a flight of six Grumman Hellcats sent over Clark Field near Manila during Vice-Admiral John S. McCain's continuing blasting of the Philippines in advance of support of the Luzon landings.

Lt. Craig was a P-38 pilot.
The Air Medal has been awarded him for sinking a Japanese cargo ship in Hansa bay and the citation states that he had accomplished a feat which ordinarily is done only by bombers.
The young flyer's father is in Sacramento on business and will be unable to attend the special service but Mrs. Craig is being accompanied by two of Lt. Craig's flying buddies who were with him in New Guinea, Lts. Eldon Ayres and Thomas R. Miller, both night fighter pilots, as well as her son, Tom of Brea, Mrs. Dayton Alexander of Santa Ana and S/Sgt Jimmy Baker, Lt. Craig's schoolboy pal who recently returned to Brea from 20 months in the Aleutians.
Lt. Craig was about 120 miles from his base at Finschafen at the time he disappeared. A storm came up and he was separated from his wingman. The wingman landed safely in New Britain.
Two Anaheim Men Fight In Italy’s Po Valley Front
WITH THE FIFTH ARMY ITALY.—Two Anaheim men, Pfc. Arthur B. Yorba, driver, route 3, Anaheim, and T/Sgt Corwon E. Roquet, platoon sergeant, 531 S. Indiana, Anaheim, are fighting in Italy’s Apennines before the Po Valley with the 362nd Infantry Regiment, which broke through the Gothic Line in one of its highest and best defended sectors. The 362nd is part of the 91st “Powder River” division with the Fifth Army.
Their regiment broke across the Sieve river in the strongly defended line and attained the top of Mount Calvi, 2,225-foot-high mountain in which the Germans had emplaced artillery in tunnels running 50 feet underground in rock.
At the entrance of one of these there had been seven enemy guns emplaced. The outfit captured 400 Germans and killed and wounded See 550 Days Combat Duty in Italy

Inacio, auto mechanic, route 1, Buena Park; Cpl. Richard Stewart, air compressor operator, Fullerton, and Cpl. Thomas A. Myers, radio operator, 520 East Central, La Habra, are members of the 19th Combat Engineer Regiment, Mediterranean theater veterans now maintaining roads, bridges and trails for the Fifth Army in rugged mountain terrain before the Po Valley in Italy.
The 19th has maintained or rebuilt more than 4,000 miles of road and built or repaired more than 200 bridges in the Italian campaign and has served in combat for more than 550 days, including action at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, and Cassino, Italy.
The engineers took up defensive positions against a possible Japanese invasion of California early in the war when a Japanese submarine shelled Santa Barbara.
While serving in support of a Ranger battalion in the Tunisian campaign, the 19th Engineers removed more than 15,000 mines from a single minefield at Sened.
The 19th sailed overseas in August, 1942, served in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England and landed on African D-Day, November 8, 1942, at Arzew, Northern Algeria. They went up to secure the left flank of the 1st Infantry Division. When the Algerian fight ended, part of the 19th went to work unloading supplies at the Arzew port.
The regiment entered the Tunisian campaign in January, 1943. The 19th again was in the aviator as the Seventh Army invaded Sicily. The outfit entered the Italian campaign in October, 1943. They supported the First Special Service Forces and the 85th “Custer” and 88th “Blue Devil” divisions in the spring offensive to Rome and continued to serve in support of the 88th and 85th divisions as they bridged the Arno river and pierced the Gothic Lite.
They have been commended by Lieutenant General Omar N. Bradley, now commanding the 21st Army Group on the Western Front, and Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Jr., Third Army commander.

Former Gazette Paper Carrier Wins Unit Citation
The "little shaver" who used to carry papers for the Anaheim Gazette 10 years ago has just been awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for distinguishing himself in action against the enemy in helping sink the German cruiser Taranto.
He is First Lieut. Robert D. Frazee of 305 South Bristol street, Santa Ana. Included in the unit citation are two other Santa Ana men, Cpl. Jack O. Harper and Pfc. Eugene W. Brookbank.
The three men are members of a B-25 Mitchell bombardment group of the 12th Air Force. They sank the cruiser Taranto in La Spezia harbor last fall. The Germans had attempted to move the cruiser into position to block the entrance to the vital harbor. Despite formidable concentration of anti-aircraft guns the attack was carried out without loss of aircraft and without casualties. The group was previously cited for outstanding close support missions flown in Tunisia and Sicily while assisting the British Eighth and American Fifth and Seventh Armies.
At the time Lt. Frazee was employed by the Anaheim Gazette his father was managing a vegetable market in Anaheim.

I spotted a shadow down on the field," he explained, "and dove on the plane from 5,000 feet watching it about a mile east of the airstrip. I got in one short burst before he turned to the left.
"I jockeyed back into position and gave him a second burst which knocked hell out of the plane and killed the pilot. I made sure of this by flying right up to him and looking into the cockpit. The pilot was slumped over.
"I had caught him as he was in a long turn only 300 feet above the ground. The plane went right in the turn, hit the ground and drew up."
Lieutenant Neander entered Naval flight training in January 1941, and received his wings and commission in November of the same year as member of the third class. Naval aviators graduated from the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas. He served as an instructor at the Texas field for two years before coming to the pacific combat zone.
