"Life" will be the subject of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. These words of Jesus from John's Gospel are the Golden Text: "This is life eternal, that they might know the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." The Psalmist writes, "He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death... He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." In Luke's Gospel it is related that as Jesus went into the city of Nain "there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: ... And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier; and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother." Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over death." Selfridge, pastor Church of the United Anaheim Navy Pilot With Air Group 14, Helps Sink 92 Jap Ships in the Pacific Lieutenant (junior grade) William E. Dickey, U.S.N.R., of 733 North Lemon, Anaheim, California, has returned from a tour of duty as pilot of a Navy fighter plane based on a baby flattop, the USS LANSHAW BAY. Attached to Composite Squadron 68, he was in the thick of the invasion of Saipan, Tinian, and Leyte. Lieutenant (junior grade) Dickey, who flew a General-Motors-built WILDCAT, is credited with shooting down one Jap plane. He bagged the plane, a fighter, on October 24, when his division of four fighters knocked down five planes of an attacking force of eight. Next day, in the big battle off Samar Island, while enemy shells bracketed his carrier, his plane was launched. He proceeded to strafe the big Jap fleet, which consisted of four battleships, four cruisers, and 12 destroyers. Air Group 14 fought in every major encounter in the Pacific from May until November. Her pilots destroyed 158 Japanese planes in the air and scores on the ground. Its fighter, bomber and torpedo planes sank 92 enemy ships, totaling 238,000 tons, and damaged 200 others, including two battleships. Forty-six pilots and 26 aircrewmen of the group were listed as killed or missing in action, which clearly shows how many big battles in which the group was involved. Several other airmen were picked up from the sea in hair-raising rescues under the very muzzles of Jap shore guns. During the second Battle of the Distinction, the following aircraft were involved: Frank Baum, 76, Long Time Anaheim Resident Dies Death claimed one of Anaheim's "old timers" early Friday morning when Frank Baum, 76, passed away at his home, 204 North Palm street. Forty-six pilots and 26 aircrewmen of the group were listed as killed or missing in action, which clearly shows how many big battles in which the group was involved. Several other airmen were picked up from the sea in hair-raising rescues under the very muzzles of Jap shore guns. During the second Battle of the Philippines, the flyers of Air Group 14 struck at a Japanese battleship task force, sending bombs and torpedoes into at least two of the enemy vessels. The Air Group had its combat indoctrination with raids on Marcus and Wake Islands, but the war really began for the airmen when they were assigned to the pre-invasion softening up of the Marianas. Later they had the job of supporting our forces ashore. On June 20 the Air Group struck at an enemy force west of the Marianas in the First Battle of the Philippines. Five Jap fleet oilers, protected by eight destroyers, were the targets of the Air Group's guns and bombs. Two oilers were sunk and three severely damaged, while two of the escorting destroyers also were hit. Five enemy fighters were shot out of the air. On the long return journey to the carrier, 11 of 12 HELLDIVERS and three of seven AVENGER torpedo planes were forced down when they ran out of gas. Alert rescue units picked up crews of seven dive bombers and all the torpedo planes. Thirty-one Jap planes were victims of the Air Group's gunners during an attack on one of our carrier task forces off Formosa on October 15. Three days later they downed 16 enemy aircraft. On this occasion, Lieutenant Edward B. Big Ed) Turner, U.S.N.R., of Green Cove Springs, Florida, shot down five Jap fighters in quick succession. Commander John D. Blitch, U.S.N., of 326 West College Avenue, Decatur, Georgia, and 11A Mill Street, Charleston, South Carolina, led the Air Group. Its members hold 395 decorations, including 17 highly-prized Navy Crosses.
