According to Luke, Jesus gave his twelve disciples "power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick... And they departed,... preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere." "When they were returned," the account continues "he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place.... And the people, when they knew it, followed him; and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "It is possible—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness." The experience has proved enriching to Mrs. Boyd and comforting to the young men who are thousands of miles from their own homes; homes that are in Japanese occupied territory; homes that they have not been able to visit for more than five years; homes from which they have received no word in that same length of time so that they do not know if their own "Mothers" still live. Chief Yeoman Longhurst Chief Storekeeper Hanusik Chief Yeoman Pearson Chief Yeoman Angel It's not easy to become a chief petty officer in the Navy and these are the first four WAVES who qualified for the rating. Women must take examinations and be considered for advancement along with all other enlisted Navy personnel. Chiefs wear the same uniform as other enlisted WAVES, except for an officer's type hat with the fouled anchor — the regular chief petty officer's cap device. Rhodell Angel comes from Thief River Falls, Minn. Vera Maxine Pearson's home is in Loda, Ill. Frances D. Hanusik is from Yonkers, N. Y. Marion T. Longhurst is a native of Stamford, Conn. Three of the chiefs are stationed in Washington and Chief Longhurst is on duty in New Orleans, La. The Navy can't promise many girls will qualify for chief, but it offers good-paying, patriotic jobs to qualified women between 20 and 36, without children under 18. OFFICIAL U. S. NAVY PHOTOGRAPHS Monte Webb Takes Office at Izaak Walton Meeting Monte Webb was installed president of the Anaheim chapter of Isaak Walton League of America, Inc. Wednesday night at the Odd Fellow's hall and will direct the interesting activities of the organization for the next year. Others installed with him were Dick Martin, vice-president; James Ry-mer, secretary and Charles Evans, treasurer. The new board of directors includes Gene Bercot, Roy Mabee, Henry DuBois, Arch Henry, Al Hughes, Octave Roquet, Don Pannier and Herman Freeze. Following the installation services pictures of deep sea fishing and wild life in Africa were shown. The evening was concluded with the serving of refreshments. On Thursday night members of the Anaheim Fly Tying club met at the home of Dick Martin on East Center street to receive instructions on fly casting preparatory to the next California state casting tournament that will be held in Anaheim. Martin is the world's champion fly caster. RETURN FROM NORTH Bernice and Marilyn Hargrove, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Alva E. men who are thousands of miles from their own homes; homes that are in Japanese occupied territory; homes that they have not been able to visit for more than five years; homes from which they have received no word in that same length of time so that they do not know if their own "Mothers" still live. Mrs. Boyd unconsciously began her mothering of Chang Sien-tai Cho Chen-Yuan, sergeants and Chen Chi Shou, first lieutenant, last fall at a benefit tea sponsored by the Business and Professional Women of this city when they were raising money to help train young Chinese women in nursing. The three young cadets, stationed at the Santa Ana Air Base, were guests at the affair and noticing their shyness. Mrs. Boyd, with true American hospitality, kept urging them to have more cakes and tea and soon her jolly manner dispelled their shyness. One of the cadets followed her to the kitchen and said that she reminded him of his own mother and when she invited him and his friends to visit in her home he said, "I will call you my American Mother." From then on she has been their "American Mother" and her home has been open to them. Shortly before they were ordered to another base in Arizona they showed their appreciation by arranging a true Chinese dinner in her honor at a local Chinese restaurant. Though they were eager to complete their training so that they could again return to the fight for their country's freedom, it was with regret that they left Mrs Boyd. Since their move shortly before Thanksgiving, they have continued to show their appreciation for what she has done for them, by writing her many letters and remembering her at Christmas time with appropriate greetings. The three young men, who are in their early twenties, are acting as interpreters at their new basal and their letters have expressed the hope they will again see their "American Mother" before the leave America. Crouch In Free China The Frank N. Gibbs of East Center street were in receipt of a letter from New York, this week, giving them additional information about their son-in-law, Rev. Archie Crouch, who is in Free China serving as missionary with the allied protestant churches. The letter was sent from the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian church and said a cablegram, dated Chengtu, December 29 had just been received. It read: "Working Border Services Airmen Rescue Project, Address Church of Christ, China 72, Fangkai Chengtu." This apparently refers to work among the border tribes and work done in rescuing and aiding lost American airmen. Rev. Crouch reached China the middle of November via India and "flying over the hump." His wife and three children are residing in Fullerton. Rev. Crouch expects to be gone two years. He and his wife formerly served five years in China returning to this country just prior to our entry into the war.
