NEED MORE NURSES WASHINGTON, D. C.—A total of 48,684 nurses—more than twice the number of World War I—are now serving in the armed forces; it was announced by the American Red Cross, recruiting agency for the Army and Navy Nurse Corps. Because of the size of the nation's armed forces in this war, the Nurse Corps of the two services must be increased even further. The Army Nurse Corps has about 40,000 nurses, more than half serving overseas. The Navy has 8,-684 nurses now. The peak for World War I was 1,500. NEW EAR PLUGS FOR ARMY GUNNERS The Association of Military Surgeons recently exhibited rubber ear plugs which promise to save thousands of American gunners from lifelong deafness, the Ninth Service Command surgeon related today. ANAHEIM GAZETTE Buy a Part of That Lease on Peace By BOB HOPE How do you do, ladies and gentlemen, this is Bob "Sixth War Loan" Hope, saying that once we put Hitler into a permanent trance, it won't be long before we kick Tojo right in his Japants. Here comes the Sixth War Loan, folks... monotonous, isn't it? But not half as monotonous as the life those boys out there in those jungles are living. I guess nobody can tell us anything new about War Bonds. We've heard all the selling points. And we know a $25 Bond buys seventeen steel helmets, or three gas masks, or ninety-eight first-aid kits. That a Garand rifle shoots an extra one-thousand rounds every time we pop for the $100 job. That it takes half-a-million bucks in gasoline to put one thousand Flying Fortresses over Germany. And don't think the U.S. A. is the only country where they sell War Bonds. They sell Bonds in Japan, too. Of course, their sales policy is a little different. If you're a Jap and don't buy a Bond, Tojo hisses at you through his front teeth. The only trouble is, there's only one hiss. The next thing you know you're a near Miss. But it's different in Germany. In Germany a Storm Trooper comes around and says, "Do you want to buy a Bond?" And you say, "No, I don't." And he says, "Oh yes, you do" and you say "Oh no, I don't." And he says, "Quit talking, you're dead!" But no kidding, folks, we can have a little fun at the expense of the Japs and the Nazis, yet they're a tough proposition. The Germans are about as soft as the Siegfried Line and the Japs are no softer than those murderous miles of jungles our kids are fighting through. I guess it doesn't take many people to start Church News FOUR-SQUARE GOSPEL Broadway and Manchester. Rev. and Mrs. James R. Harrison, pastors. The Golden Text is from John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." Luke's Gospel relates that "a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant." When Jesus neared the house, the centurion sent friends and said, "Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed." When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him... and said... certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant." When Jesus neared the house, the centurion sent friends and said, "Lord, trouble not thy self: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: . . . but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. . . . When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, . . . and said . . . I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick." M. Giannini that the board of directors had declared a special Christmas bonus to officers and employees. For employees with 12 months or more service the bonus is 40 per cent of the first $500 of the basic November salary, and 35 per cent of any portion in excess of that amount. Those with a shorter period of service will receive a proportionate credit based on number of full months employed. This special bonus brings the total of bonuses voted the staff during the 12 months to approximately 90 per cent of one month's salary. Bonus funds are intended for investment in Bank of America capital stock for the benefit of employees. However, as in previous years, the Christmas bonus may be withdrawn in cash by employees whose basic salary is less than $200 per month. WAR BONDS purchased today will save scores of lives. FREE METHODIST The pastor will speak on "God Made Real to You" at the morning service hour at 11:00 o'clock. THE CHRISTMAS SEALS Christmas Seal time is here again. This heartwarming practice of buying cheery little seals to help combat tuberculosis, began just forty years ago and has since become a world-wide tradition. The Christmas Seals are sold in 46 countries. This year, as usual, they make their appearance. In a war-torn world they are reassuring reminders that we live in a civilized world after all and humanity has a streak of goodness in it that it will not be put down. This year, as never before, the Christmas Seals are needed. Tuberculosis is on the increase. The steady progress of medical science in the treatment of the disease has not been sufficient to stem the debilitating inroads of war. Our crowded war production centers, overwork and nervous exhaustion have been an open invitation to tuberculosis. The great tragedy is that too many persons don't realize it when the unwelcome guest has found his way into their homes. Yes, the Christmas Seal has new significance this year. It is one means by which all of us can take part in the fight against the renewed threat of man's ancient enemy—the white plague. Phone your news items to The Gazette. Call 2206.
