Gasoline Tax Assessments For 4th Time This Year SACRAMENTO—For the fourth time this year monthly California gasoline tax assessments are less than they were for the corresponding period of 1943. This was revealed here today when George R. Reilly, member of the State Board of Equalization, announced that taxes for August, based on distribution of 140,025,310 gallons, amounted to $4,200,759 in contrast to taxes of $4,650,545, based on distribution of 155,018,160 gallons in August, 1943. Reilly pointed out that this marked a loss of $449,786, making a drop of 9.6 per cent in highway revenues for the month of August. Reilly believes that the seven months' experience is clearly indicative of a definite decrease in highway revenues so long as war conditions continue to restrict civilian consumption of motor vehicle fuel. He concludes that the situation emphasizes the need for adequate reserves in the post-war period for deferred maintenance and construction of highway facilities. Mabelle H. When, in Eden, Satan said to Eve: "Ye shall not surely die," and thus called God a liar, God faced a challenge. Satan has kept that challenge before our God in the form of sin, suffering and heartache among men from that day until this present one. But God has answered; and His answer is Christ—the Christ who said, "And I, if I be lifted up, shall draw all men unto me." It is our duty to hold up this answer to a lost and dying world. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; ... Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life." On this subject Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "If the change called death destroyed the belief in sin, sickness, and death, happiness would be won at the moment of dissolution, and be forever permanent; but this is not so. Perfection is gained only by perfection. They who are unrighteous shall be unrighteous still, until in divine Science Christ, Truth, removes all ignorance and sin." Spears Studio Has Fine New Location Spears Studio, who has recently moved to their new location at 117 South Los Angeles street, has a most attractive business establishment and is now ready to have their customers visit them and they invite new customers to call and see their line of pictures and portraits. Mr. Spears is no new comer to this city, having been in business here for the past eighteen years, formerly owning the Mission Studio. He started in business across the street from the post office when it was located on Clementine street. Prior to the war, the local studio specialized in pictures of scenes in the state of California, these being sold over the entire state. Many of these hand tinted pictures, the work being done by Mrs. Spears, are on display and for sale at the studio today but due to the traveling conditions, Mr. Spears is unable to cover the state in a sales campaign. Many schools of the state have a number of these beautiful scenes in their class rooms. Mr. Spears has a letter of praise from the Eastman Kodak Company complimenting them on the excellence of their hand color work, stating that it is one of the finest pieces of work to be sent to their offices. The Spears Studio specializes in portrait work, finishing, enlarging, copying or any other phase of work in this line. Groups Dr. Vierling Kersey, Superintendent of the Los Angeles City Schools, today called upon the voters of California to right what he terms a great injustice at the polls November 7 by voting "YES" on number 3. "It's a deplorable fact," said Dr. Kersey, "that salaries of all state officials are adjusted from time to time by the State Legislature, except those of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Controller, the State Treasurer, the Secretary of State, and the Lieutenant Governor. The salaries of those officials have been frozen by the State Constitution since 1908." In 1908 we still had the horse and buggy. Since then California has grown up. Its population has multiplied, and duties and responsibilities of these five public officials have grown with the population. In addition to duties which their respective offices originally called for, each is now a member of numerous boards and commissions. Salaries of other members of these boards and commissions have been adjusted by the legislature from time to time. In instances they are double those of the Constitutional officers mentioned. These officers are all elective. They have been giving excellent service to the state. Why shouldn't the legislature have the same right with reference to these five officials? "The members of the legislature are the chosen representatives of the people of this state and the people, through such representatives, should fix and determine from time to time the compensation of their servants. The state welfare demands that this situation be corrected and that the law be made uniform." CONVALESCING FROM OPERATION AT HOSPITAL John P. Mary of this city, is convalescing from an operation at the Anaheim Lutheran Hospital and is able to have visitors again. He hopes to return to his home at 922 North Palm street next week. Through the cooperation of the State Department of Agriculture and the county agricultural commissioners, California citrus growers can now purchase young trees immune to psorosis or scaly bark disease. These camps will appeal to women war workers who are being a change from the more numerous tasks in factories and yards," said Wells. "Two of the camps will be open for at least three months, and the third is a car-round camp. They are not location-type camps, or suitable short-time jobs for housewives." Wells described all of the harsh camps as comfortable and adequate. Wages range from sixty-five to seventy cents an hour and the room and board from $1.25 to $50 per day.
