A Lecture on Christian Science Entitled Christian Science: Its Revelation of God’s Plan and Purpose to Man by Hugh Stuart Campbell, C.S.B. of Chicago, Illinois
Given Sunday afternoon, October 15, 1944, at the Anaheim Union High School auditorium, under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Anaheim.
Sponsored by the local Christian Science church, invitations were extended throughout this territory to other Christian Science congregations, as well as the general public, to which the usual large audience responded.
Similar lectures are sponsored periodically by each branch of The Mother Church, providing an opportunity by those who are not already students of Christian Science, to obtain a truthful analysis of this religious belief, and to gain some understanding of the teachings of Christian Science.
The lecturer spoke substantially as follows:
People all over the earth seem to be drinking a cup of bitters in a degree unparalleled in all history. Yet Christian faith glows brightly; and on battle fronts and home fronts multitudes are seeking God and finding that He is a present help in trouble. The Bible has become to them Scriptures, also refer to God and were so used by Moses. In fact, all but Love were used by Moses as synonyms for God, and it was the Apostle John who declared that "God is love." Mrs. Eddy included one more synonym for God, namely, the inspired word Principle, which is briefly defined in a modern dictionary as "beginning, ultimate cause, source, fundamental truth."
With these seven terms (seven, as you know, is the religious symbol of wholeness, completeness) our Leader has forever answered the most perplexing question of all ages, "What is Truth?" To present divine Science still clearer to all mankind, Mrs. Eddy says of these synonymous terms for Deity that they are "the same in essence, though multiform in office" (Science and Health, p. 331). Further she has pointed out the special characteristics or attributes of each synonym, thus enabling us to lay hold upon those qualities which Christ Jesus reflected and which distinguished his mission.
It is most helpful for students of the Christian Science textbook to ponder the significance of the seven synonyms used by Mrs. Eddy to define God and to observe their exact relationship to each other.
God as Mind
For example, God is Mind and Mind is God. In Christian Science we learn that Mind is not in man but it is that which spiritual man fully reflects or expresses. Thus, this Mind is expressed or reflected by complete intelligence or wisdom, which is the office of Mind. Each one of us possesses intelligence, for Mind is ever-present reality. All ideas or identities coexist with Mind. Mind is the producer of all action. Mind as God is ageless. Mind has infinite capacities and makes no mistakes. Active Mind is restful. All immortal ideas dwell in the peaceful realm of eternal Mind. As a child of God you reflect Mind and nothing else. God is All, and all is Mind, for Mind is God.
By such reasoning is our vision of God broadened and strengthened.
God as Life
Let us now consider God as Life. The importance of doing this is indicated by Mrs. Eddy’s admonition on page 496 of Science and Health.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder
Christian Science has restored original Christianity to this age. It is rightly named Christian, because it is beneficent and helpful. It is rightly named Science, because it is based upon exact knowledge of the divine laws of God.
There is every reason why Mary Baker Eddy was the one best fitted to give this priceless message to the world. Reared in a home where faith in good found expression in prayer, Mary Baker grew to womanhood disciplined by mental self-knowledge, which enabled her in an ever-increasing degree to recognize and obey the laws of God.
It was an instantaneous healing from an injury caused by an accident, and pronounced fatal by her physicians, which led to her important discovery of scientific Christian healing. On the third day following this accident, Mrs. Eddy opened her Bible and read the narrative of Jesus’ healing of the palsied man (Matt. 9:2-6). She then and there realized the healing Christ as the ever-present Saviour of mankind, and arose from her bed of pain perfectly well. This experience convinced her that the miracles recorded in the Bible are divinely natural results of spiritual law. For the following three years she expectantly searched the Scriptures, found the rules of divine healing, proved them to be effective, named her discovery Christian Science, and gave her revelation unselfishly to the world. Mrs. Eddy’s God-inspired study of the Bible and the record of God’s revelation to her form the basis of her book, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” There she tells the secret of her healing in the following words (p. 275): “Truth, spiritually discerned, is scientifically understood.” It is as simple as that Through the study of this book multitudes of grateful folk have been lifted from the bondage of poverty and disease into affluence and health.
The Precious Volume
Let me turn, for a moment, to this wonderful book, Science and Health—the precious volume that goes hand in hand with the Bible. It has long been described in advertisements as
The lecturer spoke substantially as follows:
People all over the earth seem to be drinking a cup of berryness in a degree unparalleled in all history. Yet Christian faith glows brightly; and on battle fronts and home fronts multitudes are seeking God and finding that He is a present help in trouble. The Bible has become to them a beacon light of hope, shining in the darkness of pain and sorrow fear and strife. Probably the Scriptures have never been studied with more diligence than at this very hour; and thoughtful citizens, those engaged in a conflict for lasting freedom, believing that their own experiences equal the tribulations of Job, now listen expectantly to these comforting words which helped to support him in time of need: "Aequaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee."
What marvelous good tidings for the heavy-laden! Actually, to become acquainted with God, and to grow to know Him as an intimate friend, is a wonderful experience which may come to any sincere seeker and definitely prove to him that to find God is to find omnipresent and infinite good.
It is assumed that everyone in this audience owns, or has access to, a Bible. This book, known as "the world's best seller," is of course a prized possession of every Christian Scientist. He keeps his well-used Bible within easy reach, and usually beside it, or resting upon it, you will find the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. This textbook truly rests upon the Scriptures, or as Mrs. Eddy avers (Science and Health, p. 146), "Divine Science derives its sanction from the Bible."
Spiritual Creation
Let me now call your attention to the opening sentence of the Bible. "In the beginning God created, the heaven and the earth." Here we have the beginning of the spiritual record of creation. It reveals God as creative Mind, the only cause, the one creator. His spiritual creation is described to the reader through the rest of the first chapter of Genesis, and in the first five verses of chapter two. Then the narrative goes into reverse. A "but" appears; "BUT" broadcasting that a mist has come into view; and behold! the mystification or false material creation follows which would, if possible, deceive the very elect all through the ages.
As the Bible begins by depicting the creator and His spiritual universe, inclusive of man made in God's image, even so the Christian Science textbook begins with a bestowal of good cheer and a bright promise to deliver of all action.
Eddy's admonition on page 496 of Science and Health. There she states, "We all must learn that Life is God." Are we learning it? Students of Christian Science are herewith urged to observe this admonition. Are we doing it?
Since Life is God, Life is our heavenly Father. You pray to Life when you pray to our Father-Mother God. You commune with Life when you repeat, "Enable us to know—as in heaven, so on earth," God is omnipotent, supreme" (Science and Health, p. 17). We should give daily heed to God as immortal Life. Life is self-existent, indestructible, complete, changeless, active. "Life," says Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 290), "is the everlasting I AM, The Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase." Being Spirit, Life cannot be measured, obstructed, or extinguished.
Then one may ask, Where do time, age, death enter? In reality they do not enter. Such false beliefs cannot get into your thinking or become a part of your experience, if you are alert and obedient to the demands of Life as taught in Christian Science. Life is not material; it is spiritual. Life is not human; it is divine Life is not variable; it is changeless. To know Life as good is to experience a good life. To know God as Life will preserve you in freshness and vigor, and will erase the false waymarks of time-measured years. In Life, God, there is no sickness sin, or death, and to understand Life as God is to gain dominion over all earthly experiences.
Is today a part of the calendar of time? Not if you know that God is eternal Life. Today is the eternal now of salvation. Paul tells us that. If you do not understand all that this implies, just agree that now is the time to acquaint yourself with God. In the realm of reality there is no yesterday of mortal memories, no tomorrow of material expectation. All is now, because Life has no beginning or ending. It just is!
"Life," a well-known journalist said, "is a predicament we all seem to be in." Yes, and the Christian Scientist learns to like such a predicament. He knows that he is, and can be, no less than a complete expression of everlasting Life, and this momentous fact brings to him a realization that the restorative, regenerative power of Life goes on eternally and is perfectly expressed by man as God's image.
Thus you may truthfully say of yourself: I am complete, the image and likeness of a complete God. The tells the secret of her healing in the following words (p. 275): "Truth, spiritually discerned, is scientifically understood." It is as simple as that. Through the study of this book multitudes of grateful folk have been lifted from the bondage of poverty and disease into affluence and health.
The Precious Volume
Let me turn, for a moment, to this wonderful book, Science and Health—the precious volume that goes hand in hand with the Bible. It has long been described in advertisements as "the original, standard, and only textbook on Christian Science Mind-healing."
The volume is "original," "Because," as Mrs. Eddy states, "it was the first book known, containing a thorough statement of Christian Science" (Science and Health, p. 456). It is "standard," because, as Mrs. Eddy states, "other works, which have borrowed from this book without giving it credit, have adulterated the Science" (ibid., p. 457). And it is the "only," because there is no other "textbook on Christian Science Mind-healing" in the storehouse of the world's literature.
This textbook of Christian Science is an unparalleled exposition of the revelation of Truth to its inspired author. The book reveals the power of the Word of God as an ever-available saving grace, adequate to meet all the needs of humanity. And it brings a message of peace, security, and good will to all peoples and nations. Indeed, Mrs. Eddy, finding in the Scriptures the foundational truths for her discovery of Christian Science, succeeded beyond all other religious leaders in unlocking the spiritual treasures in Holy Writ and making them available for the redemption, salvation, and healing of a troubled world.
Science and Health contains the complete statement of Christian Science. Nothing can be added to it; nothing can be taken from it. The demonstrable truths here set forth are for all to understand and to practice. Our Leader, more than all others, knew what consistent study of this book and the practice of its revealed truths mean for the Christianization of the civilized world.
Our Leader loved this her major work on Christian Science, loved it and pondered it; because she knew its divine utterance points the way of salvation—points to the gifts of God—bringing the greatest of blessings to the human race.
I have found it of great value to select pertinent lines from Science and Health to keep in memory lane. In contrast to the word "but," for example, there is a little word of hope and promise—the word "let." It is used by its author ninety-three times in the textbook. Let us consider some of the lines containing the word:
"Let us learn of the real and eternal" (p. 208).
"Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love" (p. 91).
As the Bible begins by depicting the creator and His spiritual universe, inclusive of man made in God's image, even so the Christian Science textbook begins with a bestowal of good cheer and a bright promise to seekers of Truth. It reads (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
Christian Scientists all over the world have experienced the blessings promised to those who love God and obey His will understandingly. Of this record of spiritual creation, which designates God as the first and only cause, Mrs. Eddy, with clear spiritua, vision, has declared in Science and Health (p 502): "The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only—that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe." She further explains (pp 502, 503): "There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever refle ed." Here we learn that there is one creator, Mind, and one creation, spiritual ideas.
A Knowable God
In her reply to the question, "What is God?" Mrs. Eddy reveals His nature. She writes (Science and Health p. 465) "God is incorporeal, divine supreme infinite Mind, Spirit Soul Principle, Life, Truth Love." Of the seven synonyms which thus describe God as He is, four of them namely Spirit Life, Truth Love are defined in the textbook as "the Scriptural names for God" (p 275). Mind and Soul, spiritually discerned in the
"Life," a well-known journalist said, "is a predicament we all seem to be in." Yes, and the Christian Scientist learns to like such a predicament.
The life-sustaining qualities of a knowable God give me strength, power, and ability to perform for mankind's benefit. My understanding of my nearness to God, as Life, brings freedom, peace, and order into my consciousness. For, as I realize the allness of Life, I understand the truth about vigor, action, and my birthright as a child of the living God.
Such declarations are spontaneous expressions of the Truth which Jesus would make us free. Constantly affirming the ceaseless activity of eternal Life, you successfully combat that pressing belief called time. And what is time? Is it not limitation in its most flagrant aspect? Time is just a measuring rod. Every mortal object perishes because of this sense testimony—time. For example, time destroys wood, corrodes metals, spoils foods, and wastes water. Time is like an unwelcome guest we entertain but all the while wishing it were not around. And what a paradox time seems to be! Right now time limits this discussion even while I am declaring there is no such erroneous influence.
Time's unpardonable crime against God as Life is that it registers mortal birth, growth, maturity, and death as though they belonged to man. But Christian Science teaches how one can overcome these limitations by excluding them from one's thinking and putting in their place the eternal facts of man's true being without beginning or end—ever at the standpoint of perfection.
I have found it of great value to select pertinent lines from Science and Health to keep in memory lane. In contrast to the word "but," for example, there is a little word of hope and promise—the word "let." It is used by its author ninety-three times in the textbook. "Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God's own way, and let human justice pattern the divine" (p. 542).
"Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony," God's law" (p. 381).
"Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love—the kingdom of heaven—reign within us. and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear" (p. 248).
It would be helpful for one to learn the entire ninety-three citations.
Christ the Saviour
This textbook destroys all misapprehension as to the mission of Christ Jesus. In Christian Science we learn that Jesus was the name of the human man and that Christ is his divine title. Jesus, the human best expressed the Christ in words and deeds among men. Mrs. Eddy refers to Jesus (Science and Health p. 589) as "the highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, rebuking and destroying error and bringing to light man's immortality."
Also, in her book "Miscellaneous Writings," we find this enlightening statement (p 103): "Jesus personality in the flesh, so far as material sense could discern it, was like that of other men; but Science exchanges this human concept of Jesus for the divine ideal, his spiritual individuality that reflected the Immanuel, or 'God with us.'"

In Science has restored Christianity to this age. It named Christian, because sufficient and helpful. It is named Science, because it is an exact knowledge of the laws of God.

In the separation of the terms "Christ" and "Jesus" Christian Science teaches that Christ is the divine title, while Jesus is the Hebrew name. Christ is the Saviour, while Jesus was the Master. While Jesus represented the perishable human concept whose glorious mission on earth was brief, the Christ expresses the eternal, spiritual nature of God which is the healer and Saviour of mankind. Here and now you may glimpse the Christ and so work healing wonders in the physical realm. for Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 333), "Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea—the reflection of God—has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ. Truth." "To all prepared," our Leader has it, and this preparation of the gospel is coming to you here and now. "Hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown."
Jesus the Master
Now let us consider Jesus, the Master, and briefly review the methods employed during his life mission. His demonstrations of the healing Christ point the way for us on every occasion; and, as Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 288), "The Christ-element in the Messiah made him the Way-shower."
Observe, if you please, that remarkable exhibition of Christian healing, namely, the raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead, as recorded in three Gospels. On that eventful day in Capernaum, a day fraught with diversified and plenteous good works, Jesus cured one sick of the palsy, called Matthew to follow him, dined with publicans and sinners, defended his disciples for not fasting, and then after what surely we would call a day, performed these additional works of healing.
He was approached by an apprehensive father, Jairus by name, a ruler in the synagogue, who had faith sufficient to believe that if the Master called on her his daughter would live. Jesus arose and followed with his disciples to the ruler's house. In other words, Jesus responded to a request for help, as is done in Christian Science practice today.
Christian Science teaches that when an individual knows God as Love he necessarily expresses the mental characteristics of God, or Love, in a manner that is at once good, whole, or holy. With sound logic prompted by divine revelation, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science silences forever mortal reasoning on the subject of man when she declares (Science and Health, p. 475): "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas." Created in God's likeness, man eternally expresses all of the spiritual attributes, a fact that insures man's immortality here, now, and forever.
Thus you see that God, the perfect creator of a perfect spiritual or mental universe, made man in His image, in Love's image; and everything God has made is "very good." We manifest Love by loving—in charitableness, kindness, and unselfishness. We reflect God, who is Life, in joyous strength, ceaseless activity, untiring energy, by gloriously living. Because God is the source of spiritual substance, infinite wisdom, eternal peace, love, and wholeness, man as His likeness must possess, show forth these spiritual qualities or divine ideas.
Christian Science reveals the spiritual fact that there is but one kind of man, God's man, spiritual and perfect, and this truth excludes the false claims made by mortal mind for its man from the realm of the real. In reality there are no sick, sinning, depressed, limited, unhappy mortals. The spiritual, ideal man is not a creature of the physical senses, but is governed by the senses of Soul. Man reflects all that belongs to God, here, now and forever.
You see, Christian Science is teaching each one of us to walk with God to reflect God, by walking in the footsteps of Christ Jesus. The Master's complete understanding of spiritual man enabled him to look away from the counterfeit or mortal man. His understanding of God and man made him the Saviour. In the words of St. Paul, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
Grateful Experiences
Once I was asked by a casual objection by death. Heaven is harmony, bliss. Hell among other things, is the effect of sin. Salvation comes here and now to all who understand eternal Life, Truth, and Love.
Christian Scientists have no religious creed or doctrinal beliefs. However, Mrs. Eddy has provided adequate religious Tenets, which occupy less than a page in the chapter entitled "Recapitulation" in Science and Health (p. 497). The lucidity, the brevity, the simplicity, the completeness of this elucidation of the Christian Science way of life, make the Terets a pearl of great price, to have, to hold, and to employ.
Note the last of these six Tenets. Here our beloved Leader calls for no form or ritual, but bids her followers to seek find, and demonstrate the highest good. It reads: "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure" (p. 497).
The Bountifulness of Love
In so far as divine Truth and Love impel the spoken word released from this desk tonight my words are girt with power. In the words of the prophet Isaiah,"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void; but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereso I sent it." If I may amplify Isaiah's words of wisdom I submit that when you recognize the riches of God's great love, ponder His ever-present protection and the majesty of His supreme power, your eyes will be opened and your heart will respond to the declarations of Truth that have been made here.

Another experience illustrates what simple faith will do. Now note what happened! A woman with a grievous disorder—of twelve years' standing—came from the throng and touched the hem of his garment, and was healed immediately. Her faith had made her whole. She believed as did Jairus.
As Jesus continued on his mission to the ruler's home, he was informed that the maid was dead. He could not be hurried; he swerved not from his purpose. Jairus continued in faith when he learned that his daughter was dead. The Master had said that he would heal her. Jairus believed.
"And when Jesus came into the ruler's house," he said, "the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn." Jesus "took her by the hand, and the maid arose." Life was restored instantaneously.
Here in the time consumed by a short walk occurred a healing of chronic hemorrhages; a dead child was restored to life; and, behold, as Jesus left the house he restored the sight of two blind men!

Under a marginal heading entitled "Absent patients," in Science and Health, page 179, Mrs. Eddy has written. "Science can heal the sick who are absent from their healers. as well as those present, since space is no obstacle to Mind." A member of a team of acrobats fell and fractured his hipbone. For three weeks surgeons worked over him in an endeavor to put the bone in place. They were unable to do so, and the patient faced seeming lifelong deformity.
Then he recalled hearing of a Christian Science healing experienced by a friend. He asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. One treatment was given. The bone went back into its original and proper place. He slept eight hours, then arose from his bed, perfectly well. The man then joined his troupe in another city and proceeded with his part in the act never suffering any discomfort. Note that there is no convalescence in Christian Science healing when the work is properly done.

The bone went back into its original and proper place. He slept eight hours, then arose from his bed, perfectly well. The man then joined his troupe in another city and proceeded with his part in the act never suffering any discomfort. Note that there is no convalescence in Christian Science healing when the work is properly done.
Another experience illustrates what simple faith will do. A little boy four years of age, who had been sick of the painy, called Matthew to follow him, dined with publicans and sinners, defended his disciples for not fasting, and then after what surely we would call a day, performed these additional works of healing.
He was approached by an apprehensive father. Jairus by name, a ruler in the synagogue, who had faith sufficient to believe that if the Master called on her his daughter would live. Jesus arose and followed with his disciples to the ruler's house. In other words, Jesus responded to a request for help, as is done in Christian Science practice today.
Now note what happened! A woman with a grievous disorder—of twelve years' standing—came from the throng and触摸了她的灵魂。She will doubtless impress you as good Bible students。她 will be happy。Should you mention their religion,她 may hear them express gratitude to God for blessings received。When pressed for a reason,她 will tell you that their religion satisfies;that it is practical;that it reveals God not afar off but very near and a very present help in times of need。
You see,Mrs.Eddy has placed in the hands of the sincere seeker of Truth a golden key to the kingdom of harmony。He tries this key and finds that it unlocks the door to a virtuous treasure trove of good people。
You see,Christian Scientists among your friends and neighbors,你会 probably find them to be a group of religionists striving to attain and retain a sound doctrine。他们 will doubtless impress you as good Bible students。他们 will be happy。Should you mention their religion,他们 may hear them express gratitude to God for blessings received。When pressed for a reason,他们 will tell you that their religion satisfies;that it is practical;that it reveals God not afar off but very near and a very present help in times of need。

Another experience illustrates what simple faith will do. A little boy four years of age, who had been reared in Christian Science, became ill with a high fever. He was with his grandmother at the time and she said to him, "I am going to call a practitioner to help you." As she returned from the telephone the child said, "If you have called him, I will get up," and forthwith he resumed his play. The fever was gone. The boy always had received help in Christian Science, and he expected to receive it now. Oh, my friends, would that all of us might have such sublime faith in the healing power of God!
Man as Idea
Consider the Scriptural line which reads, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man,
that thou visitest him?" Christian Science teaches that man, individually or collectively considered, is infinite, perfect, and complete, and is the man you and I express—the only man there is. This man is God's image and likeness. This is the man of imperishable life, perpetual harmony, abiding health, and ceaseless activity. Christian Science tells the truth and the whole truth about man—that he is individual, spiritual, and that he expresses the nature, character, and wholeness of Deity Paul writes, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." Being the son of God man, as the complete effect of Mind, the one and only cause, is a full representation of all the qualities which constitute Mind.
Heaven at Hand
And now observe how Mrs. Eddy lifts the veil of erudite theology from such subjects as heaven, hell, sin, and salvation. Christian Science teaches that "the sinner makes his own hell by doing evil, and the saint his own heaven by doing right" (Science and Health, p. 266). As a man thinks so he is. He does not have to go to any geographical location to make his own heaven or hell. Heaven and hell are not far-off places.

Anaheim Soldier is Member of Cook Squadron at Airbase in Italy
ITALY. — "Keep 'em crying."
That was what the army cooks of a depot repair squadron said in the lean days of North Africa, when the ground crews — who kept 'em flying—lived on C raions most of the time—with no seconds and only one piece of bread per meal. Soldiers have a way of making fun of privation. Joking about it helps them to get on with it better.
But things have changed since the "keep 'em crying" days. Now, at an advanced air base of the Fifteenth Air Force Service Command, the men have gained back, almost to a man, the 10 to 20 pounds they lost, and more — especially the cooks.
Five of these culinary cupids together now total 1,100 pounds on the hoof, and are responsible for comments, on the part of the men they feed, like: "Boy, in the next war I'm gonna be a cook." Or: "Gravy job. Think of all the seconds on dessert you get."
These big boys, however, don't feel that way about it at all, at least that's what they say. But maybe they're protecting a good thing. Anyway, they never cooked before they entered the army and they all say they'll never cook after they get out. They also maintain that their weight has little to do with how much they eat.
"It's just being around food all the time that does it," said Staff Sergeant Dan E. Knowles, mess sergeant, of Emory, Texas, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Knowles, Route 2, Point, Texas.
"That's right," said Private Fred E. Keefer, of Anaheim, California, husband of Mrs. Alice Keefer, 540 S. Resh street, Anaheim, California. "It happens by we weight a lot for that reason."
"It is really hard to explain," said Sergeant Alvin R. Howard, of Lefors, Texas. "I guess it has something to do with food, though. There's always more in it than meets the eye—as all of these dieticians and calory experts say."
Russian War Relief Needs More Clothing To Send
The local Russian War Relief committee has recently received a cablegram from Ambassador Harriman of the United States embassy in Russia, pleading that the citizens of this country keep taking old clothing to the relief headquarters. Millions of persons are without adequate clothing for warmth and clothing is needed desperately.
Fifteen thousand pounds of wearable clothing has been sent to national headquarters from Orange County but more is needed and NOW.
Send garments now—make a Christmas Gift for a desperate Russian.
Take your old clothes to the Chamber of Commerce offices.

NEW SEA-WATER LAUNDRY PROCESS FOUND
Laundry can be washed satisfactorily in sea water, the Ninth Service Command surgeon's office, Fort Douglas, Utah, learned today.
The new sea-water laundry process, making use of various chemicals at controlled temperatures, was given a practical test recently on board a hospital ship.
WHITE LINED
SHADES
mean better light
Good light protects precious eyesight. By replacing the dark-colored lining in a lamp shade with a white lining, you can as much as double the light with no additional use of electricity! There are two ways of doing this: Spray or paint parchment shades with white or light colored paint, or roll the lamp shade on white paper and pencil mark to cut, as shown.
Then fit the lining into the shade and fasten the seam with scotch tape. For fabric shades, use white or light material.
