WASHINGTON As Seen By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS Congress goes to Washington. The call is out for the committees whose bills have most directly to do with such subjects as reconversion and demobilization. When the bills start coming to the floor, in another week or ten days, all the Members will be back. It is a good sign. It means that the movement of the war is rapid enough to make people think about its end. The Washington papers have been critical of both Congress and the President for slowness in post-war plans. It would be well however not to be too optimistic. There is still war ahead, and all the tragedies that go with wars. This war must have a conclusive ending. Even a little sign pointing to the end is encouraging. Are you saving paper? The government is doing its part, by helping you accumulate the paper. The OPA alone has requested statistical information on 7,715,229 forms, which is exclusive of the rationing forms and the instructions that go with them. The Byrd Committee investigated 89 concerns in 10 war industries, and found that an average of 495,480 man hours per year were required to fill out the forms demanded by government agencies. The cost to one company, which had only 4000 employees, was $90,000 per year, for this alone, and the company had six departments devoting full time to the preparation of 545 different reports on 66 different subjects. Here's the $64 question for this week: If the per capita gross debt of the United States was $1461.35 on June 30th, 1944, was there ever a time in the history of the country when we had no debt? Did you say Yes, or No? In 1840, during the administration of President Jackson, the per capital debt Coolidge administration it went down to $131.49. In 1932 it was $155.93 and today $1461.35. This is the Federal debt alone. If we add State and local government debts, the 1944 total is about $1600. That is for each person in a family. If you want the family total, figure it up for your own home. Then think a little. Air WAC Speaker At Rotary Meeting Lieut. J. Z. Skolle, Air Wac, stationed at Santa Ana Army Air Base, was the guest speaker at Monday's noon luncheon meeting of the Anaheim Rotary club, speaking on the subject of Rehabilitation of men who have been disabled in the service. She outlined the program for training men to equip themselves in the trades and sciences so that in spite of their physical handicaps, if they are not overcome, they may hold jobs when they are finally discharged from the service. Ross Lee Laird was program chairman for the day introducing the numbers. Bob Rice of the Pittsburg Pirates was also a visitor and told of the baseball school being conducted at La Palma park in Anaheim. Joe Kozina entertained with musical numbers on the banjo and the harp-guitar. Vice-President H. T. Walsworth presided during the session. Local Resident Dies At Home Mrs. Annie M. Here's the $64 question for this week: If the per capita gross debt of the United States was $1461.35 on June 30th, 1944, was there ever a time in the history of the country when we had no debt? Did you say Yes, or No? In 1840, during the administration of President Jackson, the per capital debt of the United States was only 21 cents. This was because the government was unable to find some of the people who held government bonds, which would otherwise have been paid off. In 1800 the debt was $15.87. It went down steadily to 1840. Then it began to rise, but after the Civil War (in 1865) it was only $77.07. It went down again to the time of our entrance into World War I, then rose to another peak (in 1919) of $240.09. During the being conducted at La Palma park in Anaheim. Joe Kozina entertained with musical numbers on the banjo and the harp-guitar. Vice-President H. T. Walsworth presided during the session. Local Resident Dies At Home Mrs. Annie M. Johnson of 856 South Walnut street, Anaheim, passed away at her home last Thursday at the age of 83 years. There were 43 active elementary school districts in county in 1943-44 and was suspended in 1942-43 for taxpayers' association today, analyzing the quacity of elementary school port in California counties. Three elementary schools in the county had less than twenty pupils in daily attendance, the association said. The smallest elementary district in the county, with only eight pupils in daily attendance for 1942. BUT THE COST OF Electricity IS STILL LOW EVERYONE knows that living costs have risen sharply due to the war. But did you know that most prices are much higher now than during 1914? Clothing, for example, is about 49% higher in cost. Nearly everything has gone up in price—except electricity. Since World War I, Edison electric rates have been reduced about 50%. That is the reason why, although you are using many more electrical appliances than you did then, your electric bills are little higher. Your dollar buys more Edison electricity today than at any time in history! Edison Anaheim Pastor Is Marine Chaplain In South Pacific An Advanced Base in the South Pacific—Captain Bergen W. Birdsal of Los Angeles, California, is now serving here as Chaplain of Santa Ana Pastor Quits Assembly Race; To Continue Crusade Against Gambling Rev. Wesley G. Edwards, pastor of the Santa Ana Free Methodist church, who started a crusade against gambling and vice in Orange county last week, has withdrawn from the race for assemblyman from the 74th district and announced that he will devote his time to the fight against crime. A modern counterpart of hatchet-wielding Carrie Nation who chopped up saloon fixtures in the 90's, Rev. Edwards is concentrating on gambling but says he intends to extend the crusade to include houses of prostitution and all other forms of vice, which he says is running rampant in Orange county. His charges have been a shock to some of the populace since Orange county is credited with having more churches than any other place of equal population in the nation. Included in his backers in the vice campaign, Rev. Edwards says, are many Anaheim residents who are helping the drive by furnishing information as to the location of slot machines and other gambling devices in this city. Following is a statement given to the press by Rev. Edwards when he made a tour of the county on Saturday: "In view of the fact that my enemies are taking advantage of my candidacy for public office to discredit the sincerity of my cam-paign against gambling and vice, and that they say I am only seeking publicity to further my political ambitions, I here and now renounce any such ambitions and publicly withdraw from the campaign for state assembly from the 74th District. Furthermore, I am this day turning over to the chief of police of Santa Ana, my gun permit, and the gun has been returned to its lawful owner before witnesses which will remove any excuse on the part of certain enemies to say that I started to draw and they had to shoot in self-defense. But we are serving notice that this big fight has just begun and we are not backing up one inch on that front. This thing assumed proportions far beyond anything we imagined at the beginning. There are elements back of this that have not stopped at murder in the past and they will not hesitate to do it again. If the average man in Orange county knew what was going on under the surface he would not enjoy another peaceful sleep until he registered his protest and pledged his moral support to this clean-up movement." Shown above is one of the many training turrets in use at the Naval Air Gunners School at Hollywood, Fla. This is only one of the vital jobs done by WAVES.
