SOCIETY WOMEN'S ACCOUNT By NORMA NIKE Photograph Literature Section of Ebell Club Hear Excellent Review of The Play "The Patriots" As Given by Mrs. Arnold Excellent book review of Sydney Kingsley's stirring play, "The Patriots," was given by Mrs. J. S. Arnold of Santa Ana Canyon to the members of the literature section of the Ebell Club on Monday afternoon. The author is well known for another play that has enjoyed great popularity, "Dead End" and the current review of another play of Sidney Kingsley's was most graciously and interestingly given by Mrs. Arnold, who is very popular with this group. Last years Mrs. Arnold gave a fine review of the best seller, "The Robe" and the year previous reviewed a book that was the biography of a half-Russian girl who experienced great difficulty in the changing conditions of Russia, and which was also one of the highlights of the season's literature study. "The Patriots" is the story of the first president of the United States, George Washington, Madison, Monroe, Hamilton and the true patriot, Thomas Jefferson, around whom the entire play is centered. The play is written between the time that Jefferson and his beloved daughter, Patsy, return from France where he served as ambassador from the United States, for a conference with President Washington and the at noon-hour for the next meeting. Mrs. H. D. Newkirk will be the reviewer for that program. Phillips-Schmidt Marriage Rites At Wedding Chapel Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. The bride is a graduate of the Orange high school and Santa Ana Junior college. After graduating from the University of California in Los Angeles she taught in the Santa Ana school system for two years. The bride, who was given marriage by her father, Will Schubert, was dressed in a w satin and lace gown fashion with a long train. Her veil o and lace fell in folds from a pearl tiara and she carried a quet of gardenias surrounding orchid. Miss Helen Schubert, ma honor, was dressed in a formal of pink and carrie shower bouquet of lavender and pink sweet peas. The bridesmaids wore made on similar lines to those the maid of honor, being turquoise taffeta and each carried a box of yellow iris and white peas. The bridesmaids were Mildred Armstrong and Freida Schubert. Dressed in white taffeta lace made exactly like that "The Patriots" is the story of the first president of the United States, George Washington, Madison, Monroe, Hamilton and the true patriot, Thomas Jefferson, around whom the entire play is centered. The play is written between the time that Jefferson and his beloved daughter, Patsy, return from France where he served as ambassador from the United States, for a conference with President Washington and the time of his death. Throughout the entire play the circumstances of his career as Secretary of State and his opposition to Hamilton lead to great political outbursts, although they remain true friends. The statesmen's wives and their part in the story, the marriage of Patsy and the romance intermingled throughout the entire play, with other bits keep the listeners interest at a high level. Mrs. Arnold is a most forceful speaker and each appearance before the literature section, endears her more to the members. She is a past chairman of the county literature committee of the county Federation, serving in this capacity last year and her wide knowledge and love of books and plays qualifies her to the utmost in this field of endeavor. During the business session, the nominating committee reported that their nominations were not completed as yet and it was granted an additional month in which to complete its work. Mrs. Austin, leader of the section, very graciously introduced the honor guest, Mrs. Arnold, and also the dessert hostesses, Mrs. R. W. Dickenson, assistant leader, Mrs. Bertha Kennedy and Mrs. Ethel Chamberlain. Lovely arrangements of snowballs were used on the tea table and on the mantle, as well as on the speaker's table. Announcement was made that a pot-luck luncheon will be held officiating at the candelight ceremony. The bride is a graduate of the Orange high school and Santa Ana Junior college. After graduating from the University of California in Los Angeles she taught in the Santa Ana school system for two years.
