In and About "The Orange Capitol of the World"
Some of the states are rising up against the silly idea of daylight saving time and turning their clocks back to the old standard time that operates with the sun. For quite a few million years all animals that inhabit the earth, including humans, have operated by the sun, even before clocks were invented. Without a clock to go by all animal life knows when to go to sleep and when to get up and when to stop to rest, merely by observing the sun. But after all these years some bureaucrat in Washington, who couldn't regulate the sun, tried to change the habits of nature inherent in gadgets, mostly of a labor-saving nature which will in turn soon create another "pool" of potential time, or productive man-hours. All the stress is now being centered on creating jobs after the war and it looks like every job created will eliminate the need for manpower. When you try to figure it out you come back to the question, is the dog chasing his tail, or is the tail chasing the dog? I don't know anybody except the Technocrats who have any idea what it's all about. The trouble is when a theory or plan is advanced that makes horse sense, nobody wants to understand it.

time that operates with the sun. For quite a few million years all animals that inhabit the earth, including humans, have operated by the sun, even before clocks were invented. Without a clock to go by all animal life knows when to go to sleep and when to get up and when to stop to rest, merely by observing the sun. But after all these years some bureaucrat in Washington, who couldn't regulate the sun, tried to change the habits of nature inherent in the people. Now, they are getting fed up on the idea and are taking the matter in their own hands and turning their clocks back. Statistics prove that most traffic accidents occur in the evening twilight hour, so with many more millions of people going to and from work on the highways the daylight saving idea created an equally hazardous hour in the morning. Much more electricity is used than formerly as people arise an hour early by the sun, and as far as anybody that I know of has been able to figure out, the whole scheme of daylight saving has been a failure. I hope that all of the states will ignore the official order and turn their clocks back to common sense time so we can work and sleep and eat normally again.
"I swear on the altar of God eternal hostility toward every tyranny over the mind of man."—Thomas Jefferson.
For many years Arthur Brisbane pleaded with the railroads to improve their service by double tracking, running lighter and faster trains much more often, and doing a lot of those things that it appeared to him the railroads would have to do, but which they did not see fit to do. Whether their failure to heed Brisbane's advice caused it or not, bushes, airplanes and private cars had taken a big share of their passenger business by the beginning of the war. Now, due to the war, transportation facilities are being taxed and post-war plans are being made to improve travel service, by the railroads, bus companies, most of which the railroads own, and air lines, which the railroads probably own or will own in due course of time. Rail transportation has been largely responsible for the development of this country and it is not to be expected that they will be found hours.
There is much criticism of the practice of "tipping," since in a lot of cases the tips received by employees amount to the greater part of their salary. Some hotels and other catering places pay living wages and forbid their employees to accept tips. I once knew a state senator who introduced an anti-tipping bill in the legislature. What became of his bill I do not know, but I happened to live at the same hotel where he stayed at the state capitol and I noticed he always ate at the same place at the same table. The waitress at that table was easy on the eyes and the senator who wanted to out-law tipping always left a quarter by his plate when he finished his meal. You can get an idea of the amount of money involved in the tipping business from an instance that happen in Tulsa. A chain cigar store operator offered a Tulsa hotel $1,000 a month for a small space in the lobby where he proposed to operate a free hat checking stand. The plan was to hire pretty girls for about $10 a week to tend the stand, and they were to put their tips in the "kitty" for the house. That was during the oil boom, but the hotel management turned the offer down. They already had a hat checking stand, which probably wasn't doing so bad.
Will Rogers always said that our ancestors met the Mayflower. I don't know whether any Cherokees ranged that far north at that time or not. My immediate Cherokee ancestors came from Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky, and my opinion is that some Britisher by the name of Proctor who may have come over on the Mayflower, probably got kicked out of camp and wandered south where he became involved with a Cherokee female and started a new family that carried the name.
The census, which will be organized and conducted during next two months, is being taken by the request of President John F. Kennedy for Composition Production Areas.
Elijah B. Lewis, Field sentative of the U.S. Census Bureau, will be in charge of census. Maxwell L. Johnston Benjamin J. Tepping, from Washington headquarters Census Bureau, will assist Lewis. They will work on operation with Herbert C. Los Angeles area representative of the Committee for Composition Production Areas, whose office located in the Western Building.

"Governmen officials have admitted that farmers need more money and have provided subsidy payments as a sop, which farmers oppose in principle. They want fair prices for their products, not doles from the public treasury..."—Fred H. Sexauer, President, Dairymen's League Cooperative Association, Inc.
About 35 years ago, according to statistics given out at that time, 75 per cent of the people were living on farms and only 25 per cent in the cities and towns. Now they say, the figures are exactly reversed and only 25 per cent of the population of this country live on the farms. This is due to a lot of reasons and developments, including the present war, but still we are producing more than we ever produced before. Now, they also say, that one-half of our present food production is being sent to feed foreign countries, and that one-fourth of the people engaged in agriculture could produce more than this country needs. This of course means by using improved methods and machinery that will be available when the war is over. A majority of the people will apparently have to turn to making mechanical I don't know whether any Cherokee ranged that far north at that time or not. Today there are more full-blood Cherokees by the name of Proctor in Delaware county, Oklahoma, than any other name.

The information collected in the Citrus Fruit Association Now Ready For Coming Season
Having completed the first year of its second half-century of continuous operation, Anaheim Citrus Fruit association is now prepared to launch upon its 52nd year of activity under the staff of officers headed by D. L. Harpster, elected to the presidency at the annual meeting.
V. C. Meyer, retiring president who now assumes a place on the board of directors, presided over the session, an all-day event held in social rooms of White Temple Methodist church. Officers named to serve with President Harpster were D. Jerry Youngs, vice-president; Glenn A. Hipes, secretary-manager; Burt Frederick Zaiser, assistant secretary; with J. J. Dwyer, Francis W. Elliott, Newel Christensen, V. C. Meyer, S. C. Hartranft and F. C. Edwards completing the directorate.
Anaheim Bank of America will continue to act in the capacity of treasurer.
Election, annual reports, short talks and all the varied matters of business had pleasant interruption by the turkey dinner served at mid-day by women of the host power Commission, the Federal Works Agency, the National Housing Administration, the office of Civilian Requirements, and others, in planning for and determining the needs of the Los Angeles area for increased allotments of food supplies, clothing, and other necessities, which are based upon latest population statistics.
As one of the most seriously congested areas in the country, Los Angeles and Orange counties are confronted with many problems requiring the joint attention of Federal, State and local governmental authorities. Because of the unusual conditions under which the population of this area has reached swollen proportions, normal methods of estimating the number of residents in the two counties have not provided a satisfactory result. For this reason, the Committee for Congested Production Areas enlisted the services of the Bureau of the Census in collecting the facts needed as a basis for allocations and future planning.

Chamber Officials Attend Luncheon With Harbor Group
President Oscar W. Heying and Secretary Ross Lee Laird of Anaheim Chamber of Commerce were among officials of similar organizations of the county who on Monday accepted invitation of President W. M. Longmoor of Newport Harbor chamber, to lunch with his organization at Newport Harbor Yacht club.
Program features were confined mainly to Longmoor's report on harbor development of the past decade. Original plans were to take the visiting officials on a boat trip over the harbor that they might see for themselves what had been accomplished since the federal government project was instituted in 1933.
But the high winds that whipped the Southland coast early in the week caused the postponement of this plan until better weather.

War Bond Committee Plans Conference For 7:30 Tonight
Various methods of pushing the Fourth War Bond campaign in this city will be considered tonight when members of the Anaheim War Bond committee respond to a call of Chairman Paul H. Demaree for a conference to be held at 7:30 in Chamber of Commerce board room.
On this committee with Demaree are Truman Stuard, representing the retail merchants' division of the chamber of commerce; Mrs. LeRoy E. ("Tex") Middleton, representing women's organizations; Ross Lee Laird; Oscar W. Heying, Lotus H. Loudon, Al DeWitt, William Wallop, Lee Deming, Robert H. Boney, O. E. Hanson, Wilson W. Phelps, F. A. Yungbluth, Harry C. Arthur, Charles H. Mann, Elden R. Deering, Fred Robins, Francis Elliott, Richard Clowes and Henry Baxter.
Anaheim's quota in War Bond sales has been set at $1,500,000, the same that was assigned the city in the Third War Bond drive. Chairman Demaree is convinced that the obligation will be met, although he will have no definite figures as to bond purchases before next Monday.
On Monday of each week throughout the campaign, Demaree will receive reports from banks, building and loan associations, and all issuing agencies, on sales of the preceding week.
Splendid aid is being given by individual workers, including sales staffs of the city's retail stores, banded together as the Third Army, and working for promotion from the rank of private, to non-commissioned and commissioned officers. Mrs. Middleton's women's division is also doing yeoman service, and will set up booths in various down-town locations, for the sale of stamps and bonds.
Nearly four million citrus trees had to be destroyed in Florida and other gulf states to eradicate the disease, citrus canker, introduced in 1911 on orange trees from Japan.
To the People of this Community
KILL OR BE KILLED
United States Marines paid the stiffest price in human life per square yard for the capture of Tarawa, vital Pacific outpost.
It was kill or be killed. Your boys did not flinch when they ran into the deadliest firepower along the beaches of this important Gilbert Island stronghold.
This assault, bloody and costly, is one of the many which must be made before Tokyo and Berlin are pounded into dust and ashes.
What are you doing to back up the boys? Remember these are boys from this very community, perhaps from your very home. Any home in your neighborhood which today does not display the Treasury's red, white and blue 4th War Loan Shield proclaiming "We bought Extra Bonds" is not backing the attack. Every Extra War Bond you buy becomes a direct fighter against Japan and Germany. If you could but see one man die on the battlefield, you would not count the cost of your slight sacrifices to buy Extra War Bonds to make each succeeding assault less costly in the lives of our boys.
You can't afford NOT to buy Extra Bonds in the 4th War Loan if you would help these boys.
THE EDITOR.
